POPSLeonardo's 'Last Supper' hides true Da Vinci Code A musical score described as a requiem was found by Giovanni Pala, when he drew the five lines of a musical 'Staff' and assigned notes to the hands and the bread. Da Vinci was an accomplished lyre player, and liked puzzles. I can imagine him laughing that it took someone so long to find. Still it would have been obvious to him, and one person's music can be another's noise.

POPSEnergy drinks jolt blood pressure There are warnings on these drinks which tell consumers to limit the number of drinks per day, but these are more seen to be suggestions. Often they are consumed in large numbers even if only to maintain the 'buzz' Of course caffeine is a traditional means of achieving the same effects, but very often the negative effects of caffeine and taurine combined are not considered, because they do not seem to be relative to young and healthy people. The caffeine and taurine with their diuretic effect can make the drinker thirsty. While the effects were considered to be of more concern for people with already high blood pressure and heart problems, the volumes that are consumed, and the likely continued use warrants more study. There is the chance that benefits can be seen from the studies. For example they could be used in cases of low blood pressure.

POPSAnimals with Expression-and attitude Some of them look almost human, and nearly as weird, some of them just have a different number of legs. I probably got carried away with the pictures, but couldn't choose, and aren't really sure if there can be too many pictures.

POPS Methicillin-Resistant Staph Or MRSA If the mortality estimates are correct, the number of deaths associated with the germ, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, would exceed those attributed to H.I.V.-AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, emphysema or homicide each year. By extrapolating data collected in nine places, the researchers estimated that 94,360 patients developed an invasive infection from the pathogen in 2005 and that nearly one of every five, or 18,650 of them, died. The study points out that it is not always possible to determine whether a death is caused by MRSA or merely accelerated by it.

POPSThe Lucifer Effect: Roots of Evil The article is an intelligent critique of Zimbardo's new book. Neverthelss, it concludes that it is hoped the book will stimulate debate. the issues are longstanding ones, but important to unravel because they underly current attitudes and practices.

POPSTeaching Kids Not To Think Unfortunately, it didn’t work. The proposal was supported by the Queensland Government and a Bill was introduced to Queensland Parliament, before being rejected. Bishop, with the support of the Christian Lobby, threatened to withhold funding from the Queensland school system if the changes were made. She claimed the proposed changes would open the door to cultish groups to start preaching ‘unacceptable views’, such as witchcraft and paganism. The reality is that these groups do, and always had, have potential to schools under the Education Act. This is because they are based on a belief in the supernatural, and therefore count as religious belief. Humanist studies remain excluded precisely because they do not subscribe to supernatural belief. Bishop would have been better off arguing that algebra shouldn’t be taught, as it opens the door to weird letters posing as hypothetical numbers.
