Why I use Clipmarks
I use Clipmarks mostly to save and categorize information I might need or might want to re-read later. Some information seems so good, I don't want to lose hold of it.
Sometimes I clip to share information I find interesting.
Add (19.12.2007): I think I become acquainted with the "addictive" side of CM.

Clearest sign yet of dark matter detected
splendidus
by splendidus  12-21-2009
"Had the experiment seen five events above the expected background, the claim for having detected dark matter would have been a lot stronger. Nonetheless, the team cannot dismiss the possibility that the two events are because of dark matter." "Space-based telescopes like PAMELA have seen particles that could be coming from the annihilation of dark matter in our galaxy. Similar sightings have been made by a balloon-based experiment called ATIC. Soon, the Large Hadron Collider will be starting to smash protons together in the hopes of creating dark matter."

The Big Picture of the Milky Way

by splendidus  12-3-2009
The image spans a mind-boggling area of 120 feet long (ca. 36.6 m) by 3 feet wide at its sides, bulging to 6 feet at the center of our humongous galaxy. The panorama represents the combined effort of two Spitzer survey teams, who used two of the onboard instruments.

I absolutely love this device. I can vaguely remember it from when I was a child. I didn't know what it was called, and for some reason never thought of searching online for it. I came accross an article by chance that mentioned it. Hopefully, I will soon be the owner of one of those and am terribly excited - more than I should reasonably be :) And now I also know how it works...

How to do Philosophy (via @Wildcat2030)
splendidus
by splendidus  11-23-2009
I think Wittgenstein deserves to be famous not for the discovery that most previous philosophy was a waste of time, which judging from the circumstantial evidence must have been made by every smart person who studied a little philosophy and declined to pursue it further, but for how he acted in response. Instead of quietly switching to another field, he made a fuss, from inside. He was Gorbachev. (...) A Proposal: Instead of trying to answer the question: -- What are the most general truths? let's try to answer the question -- Of all the useful things we can say, which are the most general?

How to Escape Perfectionism
splendidus
by splendidus  9-9-2009
"To the chagrin of those of you who regard yourselves as perfectionists, you simply exhibit perfectionistic tendencies in an unrealistic attempt to achieve what in the majority of cases cannot be achieved to begin with." I guess, that's why we never actually "attempt", because we know/sense it's impossible... That doesn't keep us from wanting to achieve... It's frustrating eventually...

One man's loss of sensation allows researchers a window into basic questions about touch and movement
Fast T friend

Cases like Waterman?s are remarkable in the precision of the damage: Waterman lost none of the nerves that control muscle movement and he is still able to feel temperature, pain, deep pressure and muscle fatigue (see chart on page 20). He has lost all of the cutaneous nerves that provide the skin with the sense of touch and all of the nerves attached to muscles and tendons that provide a sense of joint and limb position. (...) The past, and for most people on the planet, the present, have never been an oasis of mental calm and creativity.
