    A War Fought in Ignorance
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  2-25-2009    3
There are reports that the Taliban provided American emissaries with opportunities to take bin Laden, which the U.S. failed to do because it was culturally blind to the signals being given. No one is forcing the Afghans and the Pakistanis to adopt the Taliban’s deplorable practices; the people of those two nations are making the choice to do so. America feels it has to destroy “Islamo-fascism,” and the Taliban was the only radical Islamic fundamentalist group that Washington knew about. U.S. leadership was seriously unaware of the difficulties of invading other countries to stamp out objectionable forms of native religion. Why does the U.S. insist on forcing its views on other cultures? We have no business interfering in foreign nations religion, politics, or civil traditions. Hasn't it been proven enough that peace is better than war?

    Let the Coffins Be Seen
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  2-20-2009
Supporters of the Iraq war have long argued that media images of the fallen are nothing more than political statements But suppressing these images is the more blatant political ploy. The ban by the first President Bush was especially handy for his son after it became excruciatingly clear that his mission was far from accomplished in Iraq. Instead of manipulating the media for political purposes, the US should honor the freedom its service members fight for Why not trust the American people to make up their own minds about the meaning of those flag-draped coffins? Obama indicated at his news conference last week that he is considering lifting the ban.

Are We Civilized Enough to Prosecute Our Leaders with War Crimes?
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  1-26-2009    1
Are we going to condone torture? The one thing that has held us apart from other nations, and one of the last vestiges of a civilized society, is that we do not torture our prisoners. Why have we begun to do so? If we Americans believe that torture is wrong then we should hold those who authorize it to be held accountable, especially if the offending person is our president. What does it say about us if we are to allow Bush and his cronies to get away with such a despicable war crime? Once we begin the practice of torture against prisoners of war, it won’t belong before it will be used in civil prisons.

Hamas war crimes: the CNN strategy
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  1-11-2009    4
The use of human shields, in the way Hamas uses the civilian population of Gaza, is a war crime. Every human shield that is killed by Israeli self-defense measures is the responsibility of Hamas, but you wouldn't know that from watching the media coverage. The media is being manipulated. Hamas declared war on Israel calling for its complete destruction and is interpreting protest against Israel as pro-Palestinian and therefore are emboldened to continue fighting. The author of this report is decidedly pro-Israel, but the fact remains that Israel is using their technologically advanced military against what amounts to sticks and stones, by comparison. This situation is the result of Israel forcing Palestinians to live in a cramped strip of land and blockading food and medical supplies into the area. When Hamas fired their unsophisticated rockets at Israel as protest, Israel fought back with a lopsided and heavy-handed offense. This is what the world is protesting against.

Bill Cunningham: A-hole warrior in the class war
    spirithiker

The list is long of people that proves this fool wrong: Jesus was poor, Mother Teresa was poor, the Dalai Lama is poor, can anyone argue against their integrity, ethics, values and/or morals? George Bush and Dick Cheney are rich, they committed countless atrocities against their own countrymen; Congress is full of rich people who pad their financial nest eggs with public money, thrive on countless perks, and give themselves annual pay raises; the most heinous scandals against the general public are perpetrated not by poor people but by the very rich; arms dealers and war profiteers are rich, their records speak for themselves; corporate lawyers are rich, they are paid to delay settlements to any victim of corporate malfeasance through legal loopholes; the list goes on. So, any trust fund kid who has never worked a day in their lives are considered more moral, ethical and have higher values than someone born to poor parents and cannot get a break to pull themselves out of it.

Einstein, insanity and the war on drugs
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  12-7-2008
We have wasted countless billions of dollars trying to enforce a failed policy. We should have learned from the dismal and costly failure of prohibition that the government cannot and should not dictate what people do to themselves. Legalize drugs and regulate them just as alcohol and tobacco.is now regulated. Education is a much more sane and humane method of countering substance abuse than prison and murder on the streets. Illegal drug traffiking is supporting criminal gangs, Taliban and al Qaeda. Where is the sanity in this? Our health is more threatened by processed foods than what marijuana does to us. People will always need their occassional 'escape from reality' or a little something to 'take the edge off'. Wars should not be funded, prisons should not be filled and people should not die to support a demand that clearly will not be controlled.

Another good reason not to do drugs. To the user I ask, Is your ‘high’ worth this? Can you really be so self involved that you allow innocent people to die for your pleasure? If there was not a drug trade in America, this would not be happening. It is as simple as that. I beg of you drug users, get help. Quit supporting this senseless and unnecessary violence. Every one of you is participating in this and reveling in your self-imposed drugged stupor will not make it go away. After the high is over reality is still there. Your problems do not magically disappear, they just become worse. Please get help to: 1) get off the drugs and 2) learn how to deal with reality.

    Moscow calls for anti-U.S. alliance
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  10-10-2008
While Russia has insisted it was not intending to supplant NATO, Mr Medvedev made it clear that the US-dominated alliance was partly responsible for the war in the Caucasus by its failure to rein in Georgian "aggression". This is the result of the U.S. throwing its weight around the world for far too long. It is human nature that if one person is constantly directing policy onto everyone else then that person is going to be knocked down for being perceived as a bully. The time has come for the U.S. to relax its role as self appointed world police and let other nations handle their own affairs or we will be “uninvited to the party”. Hopefully, future U.S. presidents will bury this old school ‘might is right’ mentality that Bush/Cheney revitalized when they took office.

    Moving Beyond 9/11
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  9-12-2008    1
The article goes on to say "The deliberate, systematic connection of Iraq with 9/11 has led America into a philosophical and moral cul-de-sac as over 1 million Iraqis and over 4,155 U.S. soldiers have died in a war which will cost over $3 trillion. Additionally, soldiers from 23 other countries have died in the Iraq war. The heartbreaking loss of the lives and injuries to America troops further bind us to the administration’s illogic of the Iraq war: We remember our troops’ sacrifice by demanding more sacrifice; we support our troops by continuing the war. America needs to be restored from "living with lies to living with truth". Reconciliation begins by "bringing forward those who committed crimes against the people." We need to go through this process in order to begin to heal from what our leaders have brought upon us. Only then can we once again be a United States.
