POPSClose Guantanamo, Yes. Prosecute the Detainees, Absolutely
Don’t let this ‘symbol of mismanagement and overreach’ become the making of another symbol. That being that in the rush to cleanse ourselves of the atrocities of the Bush administration we allow terrorists to go free. Jamil Dakwar, a representative for the American Civil Liberties Union at the base, said the ACLU believes all charges against the prisoners should be dropped. Jamil Dakwar is a moron. Why should Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the confessed organizer of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, go free after his responsibility in killing over 3,000 Americans? This is the major problem I have with the ACLU. They would rather Americans ‘forgive’ him his murderous actions by turning the other cheek, to allow him and terrorists like him to strike that cheek as well. The ACLU needs to balance its pursuit of the protection of human rights for the living with demanding justice for the victims of people like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

POPSIs that a real Mosque or is that a Hamas command center? Israeli security officials say the mosques have long been known as centers of Islamist indoctrination and vicious anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish incitement. They are being used as weapons stores, command centers, as cover for networks of tunnels - in short, Hamas military positions. Again, there has been no frenzied rush by Gaza's clerics to dispute this devastating accusation.

POPSIran orders Muslims to defend Palestinians
Ayatollah Khamenei, can you suspend your blind hatred for all things not you and entertain this logic? “defend the … defenseless people in Gaza”? Hamas began lobbing rockets into Israel after agreeing to a cease-fire. How about holding them to account for their part in triggering this latest atrocity? “martyr”? You are encouraging the violence and dishonor of those who chose to break a cease-fire agreement formed to finally bring an end to this senseless feud, by telling others that they will be held in a position of honor for committing violence. And you claim that God is on your side? A just God does not condone the killing of anyone. Saying the Zionists are attacking innocents in a barbaric manner? This is very hypocritical. Hamas are not ‘innocents’ and you sanction ‘barbaric’ methods to enforce your own laws. I don’t condone violence from either side. Just agree to disagree, and stop the killing. Point blame all you want, but stop the killing.

POPSPirates to get what they want This is very discouraging news. These lawless bastards are going to get their money. Whatever happened to governments not negotiating with terrorists? Have we lost the backbone to stand up to these criminals? Law abiding citizens around the world are barely scrapping by (and some can't) while thieving pirates get paid off. This decision, along with the bailout of irresponsible CEOs, is sending the wrong message to those of us who would like to still believe that crime does not pay.

POPSA Novel Approach to Tackle Pakistan A custodianship of Pakistan? The idea was used after WWI to handle Germany and Turkey who were considered unfit for self-rule. It could work for Pakistan as well. But, convincing them to freely hand over control of their country, now that is an entirely different matter. Pakistan fosters a "jihad culture" where extremist ideology breeds terrorism and it won't be long before it reaches out beyond its neighdors, Afghanistan and India.

POPSFight for Human Rights Continues in Burma This monk has dedicated his life to attaining something we in America take for granted: Democracy and basic human rights. The U.S. claims to be a stalwart of human rights and yet allows human rights atrocities to continue in Burma, Zimbabwe, Tibet, etc. and even writes its laws to allow a U.S.-based corporation to profit from it. Chevron, based in California, has been making huge profits in Burma as part owner of a natural gas project. U.S. sanctions prevent most U.S. companies from working in Burma, but Chevron's investment there existed before the sanctions were imposed and continues under a grandfather clause. This man, and many others, is willing to die to gain freedom for his fellow countrymen. Chevron and the U.S. is willing to let him die at the hands of a tortuous dictatorial regime in order to make a profit. How is this any different than the terrorism the U.S. is creating in Iraq and Afghanistan?

POPSBig Brother Listening in on Personal Phone Calls If these allegations turn out to be true, it will only be further proof that this administration refuses to follow the letter of the law. There are clear stipulations concerning when eavesdropping without a court order can be used and, of course, the NSA claims it operates in “strict accordance with U.S. laws and regulations”. What else are they going to say? It is despicable that our government has turned itself into such a distrusting caretaker. The flip side to this story is that the two individuals could have made this up for the purpose of having contributed to a book that author Jim Bamford is writing. This could also be a stunt to get his name in front of the public and increase sales. See what we have become? It is now so easy to believe that everyone is capable of lying to satisfy some ulterior motive that no news item can be taken at face value. This country is in serious need of an ethical makeover.

POPSAAE Declares Victory over 'Eco-Terrorists' Typical 'us vs them' rhetoric but this group takes it too far. I am all for breaking our dependence on foreign oil, but current oil shale extraction technology is too water intensive, environmentally destructive, and too expensive to be considered a viable alternative to foreign oil. Any oil that is extracted will be sold to the higher profit markets overseas and we Americans will still be faced with high pump prices in addition to ruined landscape. Oil shale production requires lots of fresh water that is currently being used to irrigate food crops and ranch land which means producing oil will come at the cost of food production.

POPSGunfire exchanged by Pakistani and US troops What the hell is going on with our allies? Pakistan is supposedly fighting with us against Taliban and extremist Islamist. If we are both on the same side why not allow US troops to cross the border to help? Do Pakistanis want to do it alone? Are they harboring terrorist and protecting them from being discovered? Do they think the U.S. tactics are too reckless and imprecise? Pakistani students are burning American flags. If the Pakistanis have become our enemy why are we not treating them as such?

POPSMore Evidence of Sanctified Civil Liberty Violations
Border Agents are now allowed to search you and your car and belongings without evidence or suspicion of wrong doing. They can make copies of anything you have in your possession including laptops, cell phones, personal papers, diaries, date books, etc. What they do with this information ends up on government databases to be added to your very own file which, of course, you cannot access but every law enforcement agency across the country can, with or without a valid reason. If citizens were not aware that there are unethical individuals in law enforcement and scattered throughout the government who can access these files, and if we did not know that files get ‘lost’, and if we were not aware that computer files get hacked into, why would we worry? But these things have all become reality and pervasive. First Amendment rights are one of the last protections we Americans have against this government becoming a Fascist state. And since George W Bush was first elected, his gan

POPSPakistan orders troops to open fire if US raids This brings up two questions: Is Pakistan for or against helping the U.S. ferret out terrorists? Is Pakistan harboring terrorists and therefore should Pakistan be considered a terrorist state? The U.S. has given the Pakistanis millions of dollars for the purpose of fighting terrorism (and to keep Pakistan on our side) but it appears that this money was ill-spent. We are not getting a very good return on it.
