    Company accused of exploiting disabled
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  2-13-2009
Just when I thought I had seen it all, I learn that some low-life (Kenneth J. Henry) has been making money off of the labor of mentally challenged individuals and making them live in deplorable conditions and charging them for it. This kind of exploitation really pisses me off. This person has no compassion for his fellow man. How can someone find peace in their life after treating another human being so shabbily?

Controversy Over Selling Girl Scout Cookies
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  2-10-2009    4
I love Girl Scout cookies. But isn’t the idea behind selling these tasty little treats to raise money for the Girl Scout of America while at the same time teaching the girls how to get involved in the business of raising money? Everyone can agree that selling door to door can be a risky proposition for safety reasons. But should parents be selling for them? I’m torn on this issue. On the one hand the girls are learning responsibility. On the other hand they are being taught how to scam others into doing their work for them. After all, the Girl Scouts of America has gotten these girls to do the selling for them for years. Are we doing these girls a disservice by selling the cookies for them? And, should an employee of one company be allowed to sell another companies products on their time? What’s your opinion?

    Porn and Politics

Special understanding? Uniquely qualified? Please enlighten us as to what special understanding and unique qualities does having sex with anyone who breathes makes her think she is more capable than someone engaged in legitimate employment facing the daily struggle of putting food on their table and keeping a roof over their head. Has the state of our political system gotten so distorted and fallen to such a low level of respect that this proposal can be entertained as serious? As if to say, “people we have elected to political office exhibit the same low-moral character of the porn industry so why not elect a person whose only qualifications are that she ‘rose to the top of her profession’. Am I part of a dying breed that thinks ethics and morality should still be considered as legitimate values? Perhaps the time is right for porn to get into politics. Politicians have screwed us out of everything else we hold dear.

Is There No Shame on Wall Street?
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  2-2-2009    4
Wall Street fat cats gave themselves billions of dollars in bonuses from tax payers money given to help stimulate the economy. Their idea of a stimulation plan is to keep a large chunk of that money for themselves. A bonus is typically given to employees to show gratification for a job well done. This is unless you work on Wall Street. Evidently they think that if the money is given to them without any oversight to ensure it is used for its intended purpose then the money should go into their own pockets. There once was a time when someone caught red-handed in abusing the public trust and/or misusing funds would feel shame. These days, it seems, are no more. There are people out there who think shame is an indication of naiveté that should be dismissed at all costs. That it belies a certain level of ‘sophistication’. Well, this thinking only serves to make this bad behavior more acceptable and our society is paying a very high price for it.

Reid Thinks Ted Stevens Should Not be Punished
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  1-8-2009    4
Its plain to see, Senator Reid, you just don’t get it. The American people place our faith in you guys on the hill to keep your fingers out of the till. We trust you to not take advantage of us when we cannot be there to scrutinize how our tax dollars are spent. You guys make the laws that take money from our paychecks to pay you guys to look after our best interests. Here’s a news flash, Harry, it is NOT in our best interest to have money funneled to states for your pet projects. It is NOT in our best interest to remodel Ted Stevens home. It is NOT in our best interest to support criminal senators. It IS in this country’s best interest that criminals be made to suffer the consequences for their felonious activities. I dispute your description of him being a ‘real war hero’ , true he served during WWII and his squadron received the Air Medal, just as many others did. You say he was behind the curve of ‘modern ethics’, what does this mean? Ethics knows no time frame, sir.

This is why this nation, this world is in such a screwed up financial state. People will spend other people’s money in a heart beat without realizing it is actually going to cost them in the end. Taxes and fees are increased to cover the wasteful fiscal practices of businesses, corporations, and governments. We have seen this crap forever and I am convinced it will never end until we as a people gain some ethics and morals. This money could have gone to classroom supplies and teacher salaries. Shameful and disgusting.

Bill Cunningham: A-hole warrior in the class war

The list is long of people that proves this fool wrong: Jesus was poor, Mother Teresa was poor, the Dalai Lama is poor, can anyone argue against their integrity, ethics, values and/or morals? George Bush and Dick Cheney are rich, they committed countless atrocities against their own countrymen; Congress is full of rich people who pad their financial nest eggs with public money, thrive on countless perks, and give themselves annual pay raises; the most heinous scandals against the general public are perpetrated not by poor people but by the very rich; arms dealers and war profiteers are rich, their records speak for themselves; corporate lawyers are rich, they are paid to delay settlements to any victim of corporate malfeasance through legal loopholes; the list goes on. So, any trust fund kid who has never worked a day in their lives are considered more moral, ethical and have higher values than someone born to poor parents and cannot get a break to pull themselves out of it.

    Pirate Ethics

Sam Zell is one of the nastiest predators of the financial market and is an example of why the U.S. economy is going down the toilet. The former CEO was given more than $40 million when Zell took charge. Citigroup and Merrill Lynch were paid $36 million each for being “advisors” on the deal. Morgan Stanley, got $7.5 million just for writing a “fairness opinion,” stating that Zell’s use of the pension fund was Kosher. And Zell? He put up less than 4% of the purchase price to get control of the company, and while he might lose some of that, he cut the deal in a way that makes him a secured creditor. This means that if the Tribune’s assets have to be distributed to creditors as a result of the bankruptcy, Zell will be first in line to get his – standing in front of the employees whose company and pensions he wrecked. If there was more regulation over 'pirate practices' like this our ecoonomy would be in much better shape.

My initial response was to laugh. Anything man builds is flawed in some way. Making such a grand prediction that scientist can even build a robot that won’t commit a crime is asking for too much faith from us. Noel Sharkey, a computer scientist at Sheffield University, best known for his involvement with the cult television show Robot Wars, is the leading critic of the US plans. He says: "It sends a cold shiver down my spine. I have worked in artificial intelligence for decades, and the idea of a robot making decisions about human termination is terrifying." Noel, that about sums it up.

Willie Sutton (prolific bank robber) once said "You can steal more money with a pen than you can with a gun". Bankers have learned taken this addage to heart. And who are these guys stealing from? Ultimately, those purveyors of materialistic bourgeois middle-class society, the bottom-rung dwelling engine of all that is capitalist America, the lowly taxpayer. Once again, we foot the bills of that pay for the greed and irresponsibility that so plagues humanity from all sides.

Where is the shame? Ted Stevens brought a lot of money to the state of Alaska. Apparently, this carries more weight than honor and ethics. "there is a 100 percent certainty" that the senate would vote to expel Stevens should he win re-election and his appeals fail.

Bidders won't get properties they won at auction

This Utah home auction disappointed a lot of bidders. The banks say the bids are not high enough. I don't know much about the auction business but it seems to me that if putting something up for bid shows your willingness to take what you can get. Changing your mind because you didn't get what you expected just doesn't sound ethical, in my humble opinion.

If these allegations turn out to be true, it will only be further proof that this administration refuses to follow the letter of the law. There are clear stipulations concerning when eavesdropping without a court order can be used and, of course, the NSA claims it operates in “strict accordance with U.S. laws and regulations”. What else are they going to say? It is despicable that our government has turned itself into such a distrusting caretaker. The flip side to this story is that the two individuals could have made this up for the purpose of having contributed to a book that author Jim Bamford is writing. This could also be a stunt to get his name in front of the public and increase sales. See what we have become? It is now so easy to believe that everyone is capable of lying to satisfy some ulterior motive that no news item can be taken at face value. This country is in serious need of an ethical makeover.

McCain Resorts to Atwater's Bag of Dirty Tricks
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  10-8-2008
Lee Atwater is a master of media manipulation. His talents as 'spin-meister' have served him well as a political consultant for Reagan and George H W Bush. His close association with the undeniably despicable Karl Rove makes him even more reptilian. Lee Atwater had a hand in designing the current seamy campaign for John McCain. McCain has basically sold his soul to the devil to win this, most people agree, his last chance at higher office. Atwater's sulfurous, rumor-mongering campaign stylle is testiment to how low someone will go to win an election. It is interesting to note how Atqater, in 2000, tore McCain apart in his campaign against G W Bush and now he is attacking Obama in favor of McCain. These guys are all willing to prostitute themselves for power and money without any regard to ethics. John McCain must be disgusted with himself for some of the choices he has made in his struggle to become president. Today, he is a very different man than he was just one yea

    Couric Hides Embarrassing Palin Tape
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  10-1-2008    6
CBS is getting a little too cozy with Republican candidates in exchange for exclusivity. This goes against journalistic ethics and just plain good common sense. There have been several other signs of favoritism by Couric and CBS towards the McCain campaign which smacks of CBS becoming a media machine for the Republican party. Palin is reported to be unable to name another Supreme Court ruling aside from Roe v Wade; and she floundered on simple American political history questions taught to middle school students. The fact that Palin somehow graduated from University of Idaho with a minor in political science makes these flounderings and blunders unacceptable as a Vice Presidential candidate. The Republican Party should hang its head in shame. I wonder how she would do on the TV show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?"

This article is written by a woman in the sex trade. She presents a side of this issue that is quite different than what is commonly assumed. Her reasons are valid, and I am not going to pass judgment on her career choice, as short as it may be. She does present a strong case for making prostitution legal.

One commenters response: "Your snarky sarcasm proves that McCain's ads are definitely arousing fear in those who do not wish McCain to win." We are in fear of a McBush win because America's downward spiral of world opinion towards us, our economy, or ethical and moral values, our morale as a nation under siege by neocon intelligence gathering goons at the NSA and Homeland security needs to stop and McBush has vowed to continue Bush's attack on all of us through his shredding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
