POPSTurn the computer off! A new initiative backed by Google out today. About time there's an initiative for business and personal PC users to cut energy use - this makes absolute sense for all of us - lobby your workplace to cut their emissions and tell your IT guys it's a good thing to do. Computer updates can be scheduled to install while you're on a toilet break and not overnight - it's that simple.

POPSSubconscious Remembers Everything If we tap into our subcoscious and become "aware" of particular unhealthy behaviours and thoughts, for instance, we are able to "reframe" our thinking and personality and replace them with positive, productive thinking and behaviour.

POPSThe Top Dozen Religions of the World I'm amazed that a large portion of the world is Islam. Obviously, there may be drastic implications of a global, Islamic Jihad, which is why peace must be fostered among ALL religions. Unfortunately, Islamic extremists believe our occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan is a threat/war against Islam. America, on the other hand, can't even agree on what the fuck the meaning behind our occupation is.

POPSThe 12 main failures of the Bush-Cheney administration: A terrible legacy
Continuation: 6. As if to prove the "Peter Principle", the Bush-Cheney administration has displayed a surprisingly high level of incompetence. 7. The Bush-Cheney administration has been a scandal- and corruption-prone administration. 8. The Bush-Cheney administration has nearly completely destroyed a foreign country that had done no harm to the United States. 9. By its ill-advised military invasion of Iraq, the Bush-Cheney administration has triggered a civil war in Iraq that has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. 10. The Bush-Cheney administration has been an administration that has shown contempt for international treaties and for international law. 11. Economically, the Bush-Cheney administration will be remembered for two things: massive budgetary deficits and big increases in oil prices. 12. The Bush-Cheney administration has strongly contributed to the stalling of the international trade liberalization process under the World Trade Organization.

POPS10 Strategies for dealing with negative people My favorite is #3: “Now tell me something positive.” I'm going to try to use this one--on other people and on myself. "Right after they've finished telling you some tragic story, say to them, "now tell me a positive story". Some people have no idea how negative they’ve become. That's what they're surrounded by day in and day out so it’s just become a way of life for them. By being given the reminder, they may actually realize that being negative isn't the kind of person they want to be and may start to work on becoming more positive. Or, they may decide it's not worth telling you their horror stories because you'll ask them to think of something positive. Sob sisters (always whining, feel the world is against them, feel they're victims) will probably not find you very attractive anymore."

POPSPrecedent for The Restraints on Free Speech: Subversiveness, Fighting Words, and Liabel For those interested, here are three of the major precedents for the restriction of Free Speech. There are others, but I don't have room to clip them here. However, we should not fail to observe how specific these restrictions are, how clearly the delineate which situations justify the restriction of free speech, and how often these boundaries are transgressed in the name of security in our current political atmosphere.

POPSSpelling Differences Between British and American English
These spelling differences drive me a little crazy at times, having grown up learning American English, reading and hearing British English, and now living in Canada where British English is used. This must be even more of a challenge for those whose first language is not English. I end up using a mixture of the two versions of English, which confuses me (and probably others). Even worse, sometimes I see a word and feel as if I've lost my ability to spell--I really doubt my own memory--when I have always prided myself on my spelling. The word that drove me to find this educational resource delineating the differences in spelling is "jewellery", which I often see advertised in Canada instead of "jewelry", the American version. Was I losing it? Had it always been jewellery, not jewelry, and I had simply forgotten how to spell the word? No, thank goodness. It's just one of the differences between the two versions of English. I hope that this resource helps you as much as it has me.
