It is an indirect election, insofar as the President is elected not by the general electorate but by an electoral college comprising 776 Members of Parliament and 4896 Members of State Legislatures. POPSIndian govt. wants to clear legal hurdles for murderers Just the thought of clearing the legal hurdles for a company that was responsible for one of the worst disasters in Indian history so that they would invest in India is sickening! (This is the Indian self-proclaimed "Centre-Left" Congress Party that claims to champion the interests of the poor, not the US Congress)

POPS'Doctors wouldn't touch my HIV+ wife' If this is the truth, the doctors' license to practice should be revoked. If this is a way to get the media's attention, the man (Abbas) should be...I dunno, what's a good punishment for lying about something like this? (Hoping this is false)

POPSIndian High School bans kissing and holding hands The morons behind these rules forgot one thing... "These rules are silly in today's day and age," said N. Shah, whose son attends one of the schools. "What sense are all these restrictions? If you ban anything, youngsters will make sure they find a way to do exactly that."

POPSPakistan: 'Bastion of Freedom' - MUST READ Every week-end they stand dutifully in long queues outside night clubs, suffer humiliation at the hands of foul-mouthed bouncers, get served insipid, ridiculously low-alcohol beer at exorbitant prices, and are subjected to music so loud, no one can make out how bad it is...

POPSWhy the U.S. Loses ‘Small Wars’ a powerful force can easily lose, if it doesn’t fully understand the enemy, fails to describe clear objectives or, worst of all, pursues military objectives that do not contribute to the conflict's political goal. (dd. 1896)

POPSHistory Repeats ? How feasible is a divided Iraq ? Cut back to 1947. Ethnic riots had broken out across India, and its leaders decided the best course of action was to divide the country. Cyril Radcliffe drew a line across a map dividing communities that had lived together for hundreds of years. Result: a million deaths and 14-16 million people displaced. Neither was that the end of the story. India and Pakistan didn't stop fighting, Pakistan imploded violently into two nations, and the mayhem still goes on in Kashmir. It's only a unified, multicultural Iraq that can preserve some semblance of independence and decency.

POPSThe Greatest Flaw in Democracy Salem, currently held in Arthur Road prison here, is an accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case. He is also an accused in the murders of city builder Pradeep Jain and actress Manisha Koirala's assistant Ajit Dewani. Hopefully he'll get the same fate as Babloo (another "gangster", who didn't even 10% of the vote in his hometown)

POPSUS to 'upgrade' ties with India So mortified is the administration at the prospect of the deal failing to pass Congress that it is even willing to gloss over New Delhi’s probable vote for Venezuela (against the U.S-backed Guatemala) in a bitterly contested election for the U.N Security Council.
