About me
I live in deep South Texas, about an hour away from South Padre Island. I do odd computer jobs, blog, and do the social media thing.
Why I use Clipmarks
I met Eric Skiff and he said I should use ClipMarks. Now that I've been at it for a while, it really makes sense as a way to view the information on the web. If I'm lazy, I can just see what others have clipped. If I'm actively browsing, I can clip cool stuff I find and share it. Best of all, I love that I can post my finds to my blog, even with the formatting issues.

Girl could give birth to sibling
shaine
by shaine  7-3-2007
This is a bit awkward. I can follow the donation being similar to giving a kidney. The girl has half her mother's DNA and the egg would have half as well. But the other half would be the girl's husband's contribution? That would make him a dad/uncle. If seeking another sperm contributor to reduce confusion, why bother with Mom's eggs? If it were a man giving his genetic material to his daughter's reproductive endeavors, wouldn't that be incest? I can't wrap my head around this completely.

This is awesome technology. It goes on to talk about using it for autofluff, all the fibrous stuff left after a car is stripped. It is supposed to extract enough oil to run the machine from the autofluff removed. Thus, metals can be stripped clean of organics with little additional energy.

Facebook: Evolvgin beyond being "Just a Social Network"
shaine
by shaine  6-25-2007
Indeed, by opening the API, Facebook allows one to import from other services. Adding Twitter to the Facebook apps was genius. Later, I may be able to import my Flickr photos and check my gmail. Facebook was a curiosity at best for me prior to opening up the API. Now, it is a useful means of connecting to people. I think they could improve the service by not requiring users to double-upload their content. If they could facilitate share from anywhere, it would go a long ways.

Do Blogs Need Tag Lines?
shaine
by shaine  6-21-2007
I've had to struggle with my tagline on this blog because I could never figure out what I want people to know about me. What is my key selling point? That has been the issue for me. What is it that I do or wish to be known for doing? In other words, what do I want my personal brand to be? For a while, my tag line has been "Life Without a Manual". After some thought, do I really want people to know that I'm making things up as I go? I like McGyver, but I think that type of improvisation is unsettling for future employers. So, I've had to rethink my message. For now, I'm going with "The Computer Guy" to help me get computer service jobs. However, I think I could substitute technology or new media in the tagline in the future. What's your tag line? Does it brand you properly?

Some Really Sobering Publisher AdSense Stats
shaine
by shaine  6-17-2007
I don't remember how long it took me to make $5 from Google adsense. I know it took me almost a year to finally get my first $100. My earnings have speeded up since then, but it's still not enough to make a living at blogging. I can't tell you how much I earn off of Google Adsense per the rules. I can tell you, however, that it's easier to make money through clicks than page impressions. I don't have the traffic volume for page impressions to matter. I think there are some bloggers who don't have ads in order to be considerate of their users. Others are all about monetizing. I'm kind of in between. I like blogging, but I can't afford to lose money at it. Where do you stand? Is advertising a big part of your blogging?

Fishermen Don't Know the Difference Between Copper and Fiber Optic

This is actually a big problem everywhere. Thiefs are going to construction sites to raid copper. Air conditioning units are being taken. Locally, AT&T had to replace a big chunk of phone cable they left exposed overnight. People are getting electocuted trying to steel live wires. All kinds of mayhem is occurring due to the high price of copper.

Embracing Change
shaine
by shaine  5-26-2007    2
I would like to add that sometimes you should embrace change on your own rather than have it forced upon you. You have significantly more control over self-initiated change than when change is thrust upon you. When you are forced to change, it's not at your pace or with the options you choose. By being the cause of your own change, you decide when and how.

Setting Your Price as a Freelancer

Here is a great article over at Freelanceswitch.com, a site that is really helpful if you are considering going out on your own. You should be careful when setting your prices. You don't want to sell yourself short. The market loves cheap services, but can you survive by charging less than the rest? When it comes down to it, you are freelancing so that you can make a better life for yourself, not more headaches.

Coming to Terms With Spam
shaine
by shaine  5-23-2007    1
More and more, I don't depend on email for communication. I'll check it once in a while, but not religiously. The fact is that most email is useless. Anything of urgency can be handled with a phone call or face-to-face interaction. Furthermore, having your friends and family with you on Twitter, the people who really matter to you, takes care of most of the email in your life. At this point, I'm willing to accept spam as a part of my inbox. If an important document or such is emailed to me, the sender can call me and let me know so that I can look for it. With the increase in social media, email is becoming a means of transport rather than a means for communication. What do you think?

Older Workers Earn Many Times More Than Younger Workers
shaine
by shaine  5-23-2007
It makes sense that older workers would earn more than younger workers. I never imagined that the difference in pay scale would be so great. It's shocking to learn that not only do older workers earn more, outnumber, vote more, and complain more than younger workers, they also expect us to pay their social security. Younger employees will be paying off their own personal debt, social security, AND prescription drugs while earning less. I'm getting a slight feeling that something is unfair here. I'll post something when I can put my finger on it.

Why the 9 to 5 Office Worker Will Become a Thing of the Past
shaine
by shaine  5-23-2007    1
I don't know about you, but I often feel "trapped" at jobs. I'm there to please the boss, but for no other reason. I thought working on salary would be better as it doesn't matter how long I'm at work so long as the work gets done. For some reason, you're still expected to be present even if there is no work.
