    Google Chrome is here
    wildcat
    by wildcat  9-1-2008    7
This is just the beginning -- Google Chrome is far from done. We're releasing this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We're hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and will continue to make it even faster and more robust. We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we're committed to continuing on their path. We've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others -- and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

Microsoft goes for the open source jugular
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  5-13-2007    9
Microsoft was starting to look like they'd changed their ways, like they were going to compete on the merits of their software, not on the premise of litigating everyone else out of business. The large majority of these patents have prior art and never should have been granted, others are common sense. This is a very offensive move from MS against a HUGE community of open source users, including you. Check out William Hurley's article about what the world would be like without open source software if you don't believe me. MS is grasping at straws here, and It's certainly not going to win them any PR.

    Field Testing Third World Computers
    ouyangwulong
    by ouyangwulong  12-24-2007    5
This is a very interesting experiment in access and education. The most interesting part is that the children are expected to fix the computers themselves! Actually, I learned a lot of stuff this way - by tinkering - but is it realistically applicable to all the kids? If it works, it will work brilliantly. It is certainly a new way of networking information. Maybe clipmarks should get in on something like this...

Add a Clipmarks (or Google Reader) sidebar
    Djiezes
    by Djiezes  5-27-2008    4
And this also works for clipmarks. Just bookmark http://m.clipmarks.com/ and check the box "Load this bookmark in the sidebar". Upon clicking the bookmark, it will open clipmarks mobile in your firefox sidebar, which fits perfectly. You can also add other clipmarks-mobile sidebars like users / tags / search / folders(clipcasts) / ... . You just have to browse to the page you want to use in your sidebar & bookmark it using the described procedure. A little example (replace my name with your user name to personalize): (my) Personal page http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/ (my) Clippers Mix http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/clippers/mix/ Folders / Clipcasts: http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/clipcast/Literature http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/clipcast/Scientology Tags: http://m.clipmarks.com/tag/linux Search: http://m.clipmarks.com/search/linux ... Must-know terms for the 21st Century intellectual
    Kore7
    by Kore7  1-18-2007    1
One author's mostly optimistic prediction of the ideas that will come to define our collective future. Nicely done. Open Source : This is a term that most people are familiar with, but it’s worth re-stating. The open source revolution, where information is freely distributed and editable, is already reshaping a number of industries and upsetting traditional economic and intellectual property models. Wikipedia has very quickly become the world’s largest repository of encyclopedic information. Linux and other open source software continue to rival the big players. And looking further down the line, there’s the potential for open source science, culture, and the disturbing potential for open source warfare.

Ubuntu, create something that is stylish and stunning
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  1-11-2009    2
he notion of a strong Linux-based competitor to Windows and, to a lesser extent, Apple’s Mac OS X has been an enduring dream of advocates of open-source software. They champion the idea that software that can be freely altered by the masses can prove cheaper and better than proprietary code produced by stodgy corporations. Try as they might, however, Linux zealots have failed in their quest to make Linux mainstream on desktop and notebook computers. The often quirky software remains in the realm of geeks, not grandmothers. With Ubuntu, the devotees believe, things might finally be different.

    Apple after Steve
    Mohir
    by Mohir  1-15-2009    1
     # MacBooks and iPods and iPhones aren’t going anywhere. Certainly Steve left his imprint on many things throughout the company, but his departure doesn’t mean that their current line of wildly successful products is going to simply disappear. # The Apple design aesthetic isn’t doled out in person by Steve, and Steve isn’t the only creative visionary at Cupertino. There are lots of bright, passionate, creative people at Apple. Sexy computers will still be made. A strong focus on quality user interfaces will still prevail. Competition doesn’t get a leg up as a result of this. Apple is still strongly in the #2 spot when it comes to computers, behind Microsoft but ahead of Linux. Apple will still maintain an enormous lead in the PMP market with iPods. And the iPhone is still a strong member of the smartphone triumvirate, along with Android and the soon-to-be-released Palm Pre. Apple can now focus on the cult of Apple, and not the cult of Steve.

Windows and most of the proprietary software requires more and more computer power as it's version increases. This results to new hardware all the time for us. But what about our old abandoned PCs? Should we throw them away?... http://www.pramnos.com/story69-2331.html The article is simple and not much information is provided but nonetheless a good place to start with...
