POPSBack-to-School Season for Your Immune Cells In fact, "backpack" is a near-perfect analogy for this technology. The synthetic patch application consists of three layers of polyelectrolytes (certain types of polymers). Inside, the middle layer is whatever the scientists want the cell to be carrying: examples include a vaccine, a protein marker, or magnetic nanoparticles for controlled direction. The bottom layer of the patch is a polymer that attaches to the surface of the immune cell, and the top layer binds to other cells.

POPSDog rescues owner that forgot keys The dog Anna woke her owner up when there was a fire. They both got out, but the owner, a janitor, forgot her keys. She went back inside, and Anna followed her back, and led her out , leading her through the smoke. I've seen a few dogs rescuing owners stories over the past month, and there seems to have been one thing in common. The dogs had generally been stray, or adopted from the pound after being abused by previous owners. The dogs were proving they can be grateful, Perhaps seeing it as repaying in kind.

POPSFloating wind generator spins high up where winds are sustained The design of these generators is remarkable. Its basically a paddeboat that you fly like a kite. It generates energy as it spins in the wind and stays afloat with helium (or potentailly hydrogen). They're made of incredibly durable kevlar like material, so they should last a while as well. I imagine that if peak oil ever does come to pass, seeing these flying from houses will be a common sight.

POPSWhy 'Second Life' is crap!
Very interesting negative review... "Second Life’ is praised as one of the ‘new chances to life your live’ like you want it to, but this seems unreal for the following reasons: 1. I don’t like a world with Smurfs 2. I don’t want to live in a world with goddamn zebras talking to me 3. Second Life is already commercialized, at two different spots a person was offering ‘free ipods’ if you’d click on his shinny backpack. 4. Second Life features a world which is empty, or at least not really populated. 5. Second Life features cheap adult material, sleazy hookers and strippers. If one wants porn, simply fire up google and look for it. 6. Second Life makes it rather impossible to earn money big style, exceptions are rare. Why would you earn more in an E-True cybergame then at McDonalds around the corner? 7. Why can these people fly? 8. Weapons welcome in Second Life, so at least, was my impression. They can either be bought in arms shops or created using the ‘no limitations create

POPSFalwell's Flub - Helped Pagan Proselytizing in Public Schools Jerry Falwell's organization forced a public school in Albemarle County, VA to let a Christian group distribute materials promoting their Vacation Bible School. Alas, a pagan group steps in and uses the same policy to distribute their materials, which led some Christians to develop a new-found appreciation for the separation of church and state. POPSBackpacks for Back to School Parents really need to be focused on this issue. In my experience, with students and my own child, kids will fill the backpack to the gills and lug it around all day and then wonder why they hurt. The point is that kids don't have the experience of adults, and it is up to us to help them sort, clean, and pack their backpacks. If it seems heavy to you when you lift it, then it is TOO HEAVY.

POPSIslamic group to help America's poorest Any person who can support a political party who can turn it's back on the poorest in our nation should be nominated to the HALL OF SHAME. But, as usual these unfeeling types, come equipped with a backpack full of rationalizations to ease their consciences. I can understand we all need a good rationalization from time to time but come on ... supporting a political party who can so easily dismiss the poor, or react as though, anyone living in poverty chooses so...that's beyond unfeeling and is apathy, to the point of pathetic...

POPSKnee gadget fires up your mobile. They say it can power 10 mobile phones. I thought that thinking seemed fairly narrow, but batteries might be another story. Good for places where there is no electricity, and any number of battery powered devices are good for about an hour without A/C It doesn't look like the kind of thing you would use unless absolutely necessary, but it reminds me of the backpacks they used to describe as mobile phones.

POPSDo the Beaches Belong to the Rich or Everyone?
I've been on both sides of this--at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Big Island ($500/night even back then!) in Hawaii--where there is a similar law of public access. As a security guard, I would ignore calls of "suspects" on the beach unless they were causing a ruckus...like the time I got a late night call about noise and discovered a drunken off-duty Secret Service agent doing a noisy "horizontal bop" with their groupie call girl after midnight--a BIG hilarious no-no! "Bad, bad Secret Service man, You s'posed ta be resting to guard VP Ford tomorrow!", says I. This was in '74. Anyway, later as a citizen, I would go body surfing there when the waves were good and ignore the security guards (after they fired my whole crew because they found the pakalolo, you know, wacky grass, growing on the golf course). The beaches are for everyone, people, and pick up your crap when you leave, will ya? Including your whiskey bottles, your condom wrappers and your US Treasury ID. (That's a true sto
