POPSMapping Kerouac: The Grammatical Artwork of Stefanie Posavec Posavec dissects every word, phrase, sentence, and subject of Kerouac's On the Road to invent new ways of looking at the familiar masterpiece. The diagrams make for beautiful art in their own right. (See source for high-res pictures.) In her structure analysis, each chapter explodes in a color-coded starburst of topical breakdowns. At a glance, you can see Kerouac's focus wander from the sketches of local life in the beginning, to depictions of work and travel in the middle, with women and the subject of love dominating the latter chapters. The comparative sentence diagrams are what really drew me in. It's fascinating to behold an entire literary work all at once on one page. What's more, Kerouac's casual prose style can be differentiated immediately from the stately, grandiose writing of Faulkner, not to mention the terse, claustrophobic style of Orwell's fiction. Literary reductionism at its most fun and beautiful.

POPSArtist as Public Servant A successful artwork is one that somehow causes that audience to experience a shift in perception. With this understanding, I was able to modify my orientation from that of an artist creating objects for consumption to that of an artist working as a public servant to create experiences that change people’s ideas of what it means to be a community. agree?/disagree?

POPSSpider-man speed painting in Photoshop I am not sure if this one has been getting much publicity (maybe I should check Digg), but I found this on my own on YouTube. Nico Di Matta sketches, then paints, Spider-Man in Photoshop. It is a time-lapse movie of what was a 3 day project. It shows too, really excellent art. Check out his Sawyer and Locke drawings too!

POPSNative American Legends These are wonderful stories. I read some of these when I was a kid. Just happened to find these by accident while looking for something else. You never know what you'll find on the internet. There are many links to artwork, etc. I'll be there for a while. :)

POPSBrain 'imaging' in the Renaissance So were these master artists of the Renaissance trying to hide images of anatomically correct brains in their religious work? Why would they do it? Were they trying to put science into religion without getting caught? Or is this just one big coincidence? Maybe the four scientists that wrote the article need to take a break from the neurosciences. What do you think?<<

POPSPaper Cuts -- Clean, Beautiful and Perfect I discovered these breathtaking paper creations some time ago, but never got around to blogging about such a deserving topic. The web page link laid dormant in my bookmarks until today when I was conducting my regular computer and bookmark cleaning. I've seen this type of artwork in person before, but those pieces (no pun intended) were created from very small sheets of paper that measured approximately 6 x 8 inches. The sculptures featured in this blog entry are simply exquisite. I can not begin to imagine how much tedious planning went into each piece before any cut was made. I am amazed at the perfection of each incision and fold. I wish I had more to say, but I am simply in awe.
