    The The "The Beat(en) Generation"
    sahara
    by sahara  11-11-2009    4
And our youth, oh youth, are being seduced By the greedy hands of politics and half truths The beaten generation, the beaten generation Reared on a diet of prejudice and misinformation The beaten generation, the beaten generation Open your eyes, open your imagination We're being sedated by the gasoline fumes And hypnotised by the satellites Into believing what is good and what is right You may be worshipping the temples of mammon Or lost in the prisons of religion But can you still walk back to happiness When you've nowhere left to run? If they send in the special police To deliver us from evil and keep us from peace Then won't the words sit ill upon their tongues When they tell us justice is being done That freedom lives in the barrels of a warm gun? The beaten generation, the beaten generation Reared on a diet of prejudice and misinformation The beaten generation, the beaten generation Open your eyes, open your imagination

    US Press Freedom Improves
    sahara
    by sahara  10-21-2009
At the bottom of the list were Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea "where media are so suppressed they are nonexistent," said Reporters Without Borders. Iran dropped to No. 172 from No. 166, with Reporters Without Borders saying the disputed reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had fostered a paranoia about journalists and bloggers. "Automatic prior censorship, state surveillance of journalists, mistreatment, journalists forced to flee the country, illegal arrests and imprisonment -- such is the state of press freedom this year in Iran," the group said. The ranking was compiled from hundreds of questionnaires completed by journalists and media experts around the world and reflecting press freedom violations that took place between Sept. 1, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2009. The complete ranking can be seen at www.rsf.org/en-classement1003-2009.html Read more at source.

    Dying for Freedom (Gaza)
    sahara
    by sahara  10-14-2009    1
Died while shouting “we are in a nonviolent protest, there are kids and internationals.” Like most Bil’in residents, and those of other villages non-violently protesting the stealing of their land, Basem was out every Friday, facing live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and various types of tear gas. It was the latest high-velocity tear gas projectile which bore into Basem’s chest, just as one did a month prior to Tristan Anderson’s head, rendering him critically injured.

    Dying For Freedom - (Guinea)
    sahara
    by sahara  10-14-2009    2
The Guinean Organisation for Defence of Human Rights put the toll at 157 people killed and more than 1,200 wounded. Guinea's interior ministry told the BBC that a total of 57 people died during the violence. Human rights groups say they have had reports of soldiers bayoneting people and women being stripped and raped in the streets during the protest. The opposition has accused the army of taking away some bodies to hide the scale of the violence. Capt Camara denied knowledge of sexual assaults, but admitted that some of his security forces had lost control. He said he was waiting to hear exactly how many people had died. "Frankly, it saddens me immensely. Frankly, it is very regrettable," he told French radio. Capt Camara said he had not yet decided whether to run for the presidency and was unsure what the correct move would be. There has been worldwide condemnation of the violence. Video at source.

    An Interesting Take On Healthcare
    sahara
    by sahara  10-6-2009    8
What do I have to fear from a public health plan? That they might charge me less or, heavens, that I might pay the same amount, and actually get coverage? Some might say the Corporate Government is more American, because I have the freedom to not buy it. Freedom to go bankrupt if my child gets sick in this bloated, parasitic health care system. Freedom, once I’m bankrupt, to go to the emergency room and foist the costs off on everyone else. Freedom, if I ever get out of bankruptcy again, to pay whatever skyrocketing price my insurance company might happen to be charging five years down the road. That’s the Corporate Government’s idea of freedom. In this modern age, where power abhors a vacuum, you’re always going to have one Government or the other. As your doctor might say, choose your poison.

    The G-20 Protests Have Begun
    sahara
    by sahara  9-20-2009
Sunday's march, which fell far short of the thousands organizers had hoped for, was one of several demonstrations expected to take place around theG-20 summit in Pittsburgh, a two-day gathering of the leaders of the world's 20 top economies that starts Thursday. Bail Out The People Movement, one of the march's organizers, also called for an end to foreclosures and evictions. Marchers walked three-quarters of a mile from the church to a place known as Freedom Corner, which has served as a protest meeting spot dating to the 1950s when local black residents fought the demolition of homes, stores and churches in preparation for an arena.

I say again, the last thing we need is another liberal neocon in the White House. John McCain may have an "R" behind his name, but he is just another establishment liberal: one America cannot afford. I wonder how many gun owners and other professing pro-freedom Americans have already fallen victim to McCain's phony conservative campaign? Do they not realize that they are giving a rope to the hangman?

Sons of Liberty~Patriots, Anarchists, or Terrorists?
    sahara
    by sahara  8-31-2008
One thing is certain about the Sons of Liberty organization: it gave American colonists a voice and vital chance to actively participate in the independence movement. Finally, the decision on the Sons of Liberty comes down to a variation on an old saying, "one man's terrorist is another man's patriot." The ultimate conclusion must be left to the individual.

    Spanish-American War
    sahara
    by sahara  8-14-2008
The U.S. government was also moved by the heavy losses of American investment in Cuba caused by the guerrilla warfare, an appreciation of the strategic importance of the island to Central America and a projected isthmian canal there, and a growing sense of U.S. power in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. There was an unspoken threat of intervention. This grew sharper after the insurgents, refusing a Spanish offer of partial autonomy, determined to fight for full freedom. The warfare that commenced was short and very one-sided. Peace was arranged by the Treaty of Paris signed Dec. 10, 1898 (ratified by the U.S. Senate, Feb. 6, 1899). The Spanish Empire was practically dissolved. Cuba was freed, but under U.S. tutelage by terms of the Platt Amendment (see under Platt, Orville), with Spain assuming the Cuban debt. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States as indemnity, and the Philippines were surrendered to the United States for a payment of $20 million.

U.S. Military Hoped for Virtually Unlimited Freedom of Action in Iraq
    sahara
    by sahara  8-7-2008    2
This was reported in June... According to Cockburn's reporting, "President Bush wants to push through by the end of so he can declare a military victory and claim his 2003 invasion has been vindicated." (Note 13) A prime beneficiary of the acceptance of a military agreement that the Iraqi people do not believe respects their rights or serves their interests would probably be the vast, privatized U.S. military/intelligence complex, positioned to profit from repressing the resistance sure to follow. If the Bush administration's goal is achieved through secret deals and pressure tactics it would only confirm the widespread view that its commitment to democracy is primarily self-serving. In Iraq as elsewhere there are many who would welcome a genuine American commitment to liberty and human rights but believe that U.S. actions contradict its rhetoric. So much to decipher here!

So much information, great site! National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Books provide online access to critical declassified records on issues including U.S. national security, foreign policy, diplomatic and military history, intelligence policy, and more. Updated frequently, the Electronic Briefing Books represent just a small sample of the documents in our published and unpublished collections. A tax-exempt public charity, the Archive receives no U.S. government funding; its budget is supported by publication royalties and donations from foundations and individuals. On March 17, 2000, Long Island University named the National Security Archive as winner of a Special George Polk Award for 1999 for "piercing self-serving veils of government secrecy" and "serving as an essential journalistic resource."
