POPSPhilippine Independence Day celebrated only by a few This is a more serious clip for me... For international clippers, the holiday economics policy of President Arroyo is to move certain holidays that fall on Thursdays or Tuesdays to Fridays or Mondays, respectively, so that the weekend becomes longer. Sure, it's economical, but I still believe that a bit of the meaning of the holiday itself is lost. It really gets to me when President Arroyo stresses economic development and progress and considers them the key to lifting our countrymen out of poverty (see her speech in the article). In my opinion, the government should focus more on education. Economic development primarily benefits those who are educated - and in this country, those who belong to the upper classes. Should the government pursue this line of thinking, the rich will only get richer, and the poor poorer, as they say.
