Court orders Christian child into government education
    rmowery
    by rmowery  8-29-2009
This is just plain wrong. Regardless of the religion. The court has overstepped it's bounds. If the girl was in some kid of harms way that would be a different story, but it sounds like she already excels. Let the courts worry about the kids who are being abused, starved and otherwise in danger and stop worrying about what religion they are being raised under. The child will have the choice to change when they leave home should they chose, or to explore other religions, etc. Personally, if I were the parent I would tell the judge where to stick the decision, and then proceed to move out of that state. I do hope the appeal works for the family, otherwise this sets a very bad precedent.

This is one chunk of money I am glad to see being spent on our Vets. Hell, the bailout money for the damn banks and other wall street slugs should have goe to the Vets. I hope all those returning and those who have returned make use of this new GI Bill, it is the least that we can do for our men and women serving in the battle grounds.

I agree. We should be paying our teachers, police, fireman, EMT/Medics, etc. more money. These are the people who make a difference in our communities and countries. The money these greedy CEO's make should be used toward teachers. Granted - there needs to be metrics and performance criteria put on the teachers, but they def. do not get paid what they should.

These are the kind of kids that set good role models. I hope they both do extremely well and do set some standards for kids. You have to admire his quote and intentions: "This is the most important thing I've had to do and hopefully it sends a message to kids across the country that education is more important than money," Miller said at the news conference.

Granted - this knowledge won't give people the paper - but it seems there are people with the paper but without the knowledge, so which is bett?

Republicans unveil $100 million school voucher plan

    by rmowery  7-20-2006    1
This is not going to work. This is even worse then the non child left behind gimmick. This also leaves out the middle class. If they want to give out vouchers, then this should be equal for all, not just the poor kids. Personally the reason I think it won't work is that the schools that are having problems are a result of Parents not helping the kids at home. Putting these kids into schools where other kids excel and have the support system at home, will just lower the self-esteem of these kids. Granted there are a few that will be an exception, there are a few that are willing to put in the extra work. There are also social issues that will cause problems. The big difference I feel is that a rich kid (who might be lazy or stupid) will still have the advantage over the poor kid (who might be smart but have no support at home). Since the rich kids parents can push more money toward the school or private tutors to at least get him through. The poor kid will be struggling, probab

This is where we begin to see the public education system take a turn downward even further. I think in the next 10 years, only those who cannot afford to send their kids to a private school or have the skills to homeschool will be the ones going to public school. Since those doing the other two will demand that they not have to pay school tax - the public school systems will begin to consolidate. Eventually in 15-20 years, the public schools will be not have anyone attending but lower middle class and very few desiring to teach. Sad....but it seems like that is where things are headed. Hopefully I am wrong.

Problems with Education -- A Kid takes the to the Fight
    rmowery
    by rmowery  1-27-2006
Yes! Finally someone understands the problem. Give kids more time to excercise and their mental attitude and apptitude will improve. The problem is our school system sucks at this and they just kep doing things the wrong way. That is why home schoolers and those kids in Montessori or private schools do better. Their academic schedules are broken up and they are not forced to sit all day just listening.

    Troubling Education System

I think the problem is not the kids, but changing the way kids are taught and the way schools are run. Technology and the way people learn have changed, have evolved, and yet our processes for instilling learning are just so far behind.
