G-20 opponents, police clash on Pittsburgh streets

What's scary is this is just a few hundred people protesting. If the economy doesn't start rebooting and people getting employment, can you imagine what the riots and such will look like both nationally and internationally.

eal US unemployment rate at 16 pct: Fed official
    rmowery
    by rmowery  8-28-2009
I still don't understand how the gov't (regardless of administration or party in place) can not include the group of those not working full-time or who have run out of unemployment. There are people out there living in tents and kids going hungry or without proper health care. It just amazes me just how much disregard there is at the top level for the working people of this country.

Prolonged aid to unemployed is running out
    rmowery
    by rmowery  8-2-2009    1
What will suck with this for those unemployed is that they will no longer be counted in those stats of how many people are actually jobless. Similar to that of those who ran out last year and still are unemployed It is just one reason you have to question the hype that our economy is recovering. Consider the # unemployed and also those that might become unemployed by the end of the year. Then consider what does the gov't do with the #'s for those losing benefits, since they are not filing for unemployment - they are tossed out of the stats? Guess when tax time rolls around and gov't has 5 million+ people only able to claim less then $12K for the year, the incoming $$ won't be there?

Major Cities' Plummeting Crime Rates Mystifying
    rmowery
    by rmowery  7-19-2009    1
Not sure why they are baffled, it is pretty simple. Between Madoff, Wall Street and the banks wiping out a large portion of people's money and then the taxman, government, and foreclosures/layoffs taking the rest, there is not much for criminals to steal. You have to figure theft is out of the question since large majority of population has no $$, breaking and entering is tough - since so many foreclosures.

The Economy Is Even Worse Than You Think
    rmowery
    by rmowery  7-14-2009
From the article this interesting question arises: How could this happen when Washington has thrown trillions of dollars into the pot, including the famous $787 billion in stimulus spending that was supposed to yield $1.50 in growth for every dollar spent?

I am not even sure what to think of this opinion piece. I do agree from the aspect corporate tax is too high, but to blame Obama for that is ludicrious, since that happened over many many years. This whole economy thing is such a huge mess!

    Coal: America's Polluter
    rmowery
    by rmowery  5-14-2009
I keep seeing these crappy ads touting coal as America's Power. No matter how they spin it, the stuff is not only huge pollution, but the runoffs and all the mining causes more damage to this planet. They must have a VERY large set of lobbyist pushing to keep coal moving forward. LIving in PA and being from old coal town, I can say that once these companies rape the earth of coal, they pack up and move to rape another region and pollute it in the process. We need to shut down coal and start looking for better ways Wind, Solar, etc to save the planet. The coal industry only cares about the $$ it can reap, nothing more than that, just as bad as oil.

High-speed rail: Can it work in the US?
    rmowery
    by rmowery  4-17-2009    1
I am all for ditching vehicles and going with rail, especially high-speed rail. Turn the roadways into bike paths, put trainis in the mix and those that want cars, use the ZipCar or carsharing model. Low-cost rentals are another option. Raise taxes very high on autos that are not electric or other renewable energy. Not only can new jobs be created across the contry, but a whole different style of living. Greener earth as we drop all the carbon emmissons from vehicles, vehicle building, etc. This will of course never work totally, since you will have all the car manufacturerer, car insurance companies and the list of others who's lively hoods depend on the vehicle.

    America’s hidden unemployment crisis
    rmowery
    by rmowery  4-14-2009    1
Since these numbers are not taken into account when unemployment is counted, it would mean that there is a much larger unemployment rate. If one also considers those who have only found part-time work into the equation we could be really at like 20% unemployment rate and not the 10% or whatever it is that government is telling us.

In Order for Change - We Must Be Willing to Change
    rmowery
    by rmowery  3-26-2009
The media is ripe with chicken little running amuch. The article below points this out even more so. My take on it, even as I keep clipping all the bad news, is that for our society, our world, and the future to change, people must change first. There is way too much greed - which is what got everyone, all over the world into this mess. The guys at the top need $50million+ salaries and bonuses, which meant the worker bees down the line needed find that "honey" some place. So find ways to spew propoganda that everyone needs bigger houses, oh and not just one - but a second or third for vacations, which most people would have little time to take since they needed to keep working to have that lifesytle. People need bigger and more expensive cars, but wait - where to get the money - take out second mortgage. So the greed progressed down the chain here in the US and of course the demand drove output elsewhere in the world and the cheap labor started making lots of money for producing

    by rmowery  10-16-2008
When I first heard about this guy I was impressed that at 35 he was pulled into all this. Now learning that he pretty much was handed the whole thing via his connection through his marriage. Unless of course I mis-understand his background - maybe he married into wealth after making great accomplishments? If you have ALOT of $$ then anything is possible - your pick of education, your pick of career position, etc. The ones who I am impressed with are those that started with nothing or very little and built it into something incredible and then turn around and find ways to give back or help others.

EXACTLY! 'Why does Suze Orman say people first, then money, then things?'" she says.
