Scientists track down source of Earth's hum
    cakebelly
    by cakebelly  8-11-2009    6
more: Previous studies suggested that waves from both shallow continental shelves and the deep ocean contribute to the Earth’s hum, but new data indicates otherwise. Based on measurements from a seismic observatory called the USArray EarthScope, most of the hum appears to originate from the Pacific coast of North America, with a smaller contribution from the west coast of Europe. Waves from the deep ocean don’t seem to make much hum at all. The data for this study, published Thursday in Geophysical Research Letters, was gathered from November 2006 to June 2007, so humming patterns might be different during the summer months.

The Unexplained mystery of The Taos Hum...
    einbar
    by einbar  11-24-2008    7
"Some possible explanations Man-made noises As sound moves through the atmosphere or ground, the high frequencies decrease in amplitude more rapidly than the low frequency ones, which subsequently travel greater distances. The low-frequency sounds can be focused by walls and structural geometry, and sound like ambiguous rumblings or hums. Industrial machinery such as compressors, pumps and fans can also produce similar types of sounds. Although this is one of the explanations that first come to mind, ordinary microphones have failed to detect the Hum and investigations have failed to convincingly trace the Hum to such sources. Studies in the UK have addressed this issue". infrasound made by geological events Infrasound from different possible sources, possibly geologic or plate tectonic in nature.

Are There Alien UFO Bases On The Moon?
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  8-5-2009    8
Proponents of the theory that a UFO base does indeed lie on the dark side of the moon point to the fact that a large proportion of images taken by satellites of the moon’s surface are highly classified. They argue that it is hard to imagine what could lie on the surface of a totally barren moon that could be of such need of secrecy? I luuuuv stuff like this! .:p

The new version of Yellow Submarine will be made in performance-capture 3-D, a medium explored by Zemeckis in The Polar Express, Beowulf and the forthcoming Jim Carrey vehicle A Christmas Carol. The use of 3-D technology is being touted as the future of Hollywood cinema, with James Cameron’s soon-to-be-released Avatar generating the biggest cinematic buzz of the year.

A little science on positive energy
    Aribeth
    by Aribeth  8-16-2009    2
...positive or negative. It can't be measured with conventional methods, and that makes it all the more exciting and real to those who believe in it. One attempt to give respectability to the idea of positive energy that I recently came across involves a reference to Wilhelm Reich's orgone energy. Although I am tempted to regard talk of ‘positive energy' as superstitious mumbo-jumbo, I do have some sympathy for those who use the term. Psychological research has shown that we can verbally articulate only a fraction of what we experience. A radical response to the articulation gap would be just to refuse to talk about anything we can't put in concrete operational terms. If you come home from a party you hated and just say there was tremendous negative energy, perhaps that is ‘nuff said. Let others fill in the content to the satisfaction of their imagination. You, at least, pointed them in the right direction. <<

It won't, though, be as complete as Google. While Google has had failures in extending its brand (Froogle, Google Base), its collection of services that are affiliated with its mainstream search product, like Google Maps, Image Search, and desktop search, can make switching away from Google difficult for users. Costello realizes that Cuil needs to layer in additional services, but as he said to me, the company has to start somewhere. Upshot: Cuil is certainly worth trying out. try it on: http://www.cuil.com/

It's harder to read books these days (via @haraya)

Clipped this from a great article that not only analyzes how the fast paced nature of interactions via email, twitter, facebook, etc. has made it more difficult for us to find the time and patience to settle into a good book - but also contemplates why finding the time and space for reading books may be more important than ever as an escape from the frenetic pace of online communication. On a personal note, i totally relate to this. About 2 years ago i started reading numerous books about American history. I was loving it. Each night i looked forward to finding time for whatever book i was reading. But now, i find myself constantly in need of checking my email, twitter, amplify, clipmarks, etc. and making no time for books. Just last night i started a book about Benjamin Franklin, saying to my wife, "i really miss the enjoyment of reading books - going to give it another shot."
