About me
"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will finally know peace". Jimi HendrixPatriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. It wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, 'the greatest,' but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is.
journalist Sidney J. Harris.
Why I use Clipmarks
Often what is not clipped is as much an indicator of how the wind is blowing as much as what is clipped. We here on ClipMarks have a reputation for honesty that we must maintain in the face of the awful US media. Yes, warts and all are here.

If the community of ClipMarks represented the wider American community, then the USA could resume moral leadership of the world in the morning. Unfortunately ...

Courage of the flip-flop: Has McCain got it?
righthand
by righthand  7-5-2008    2
Like when it was demonstrated to him that his religious companions were bigots that advocated murder. Was it cowardice or courage or the pope and the Catholics that made him have such a radical change of mind and dump his fundamentalist 'friends'? Apparently they have dumped him back. Hagee has put out a statement saying that he withdraws his endorsement from McCain because he has “become a distraction in what should be a national debate about important issues.” It takes one type of courage to drop bombs from the sky. Another altogether to order men into battle. A far greater courage to bring home the troops. Which courage does McCain have? Bush landed on a carrier. He wore the uniform. Did he demonstrate any courage?

For WHAT? One Man! And the Next WAR?
righthand
by righthand  6-30-2008    27
And all for the lack of one assassins bullet. Where is Mossad when it's needed? "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" If he was such a bad man could no one be found to "judicially assassinate" this 'turbulent' ruler? Keeping the rules has NOT been the hallmark of this administration, so why not 'eliminate' Saddam? The truth is that he was never the target. Assassination would not have produced occupation. It would have save 4,000+ US lives but we have learnt that these didn't matter either. The out of sight, out of mind, no presidential presence at funerals worked for AWOL Bush. However the broken in mind and body will not go away so easily. Until they are swamped by the next lot.

Wildlife in the DMZ: Vanishing rainforest of the Congo basin
righthand
by righthand  6-20-2008    1
1, The demilitarised zone (DMZ) separating South and North Korea is home to over 1,000 plant species and rare animals. The DMZ Forum is a lobby group promoting the idea of turning the area into a nature reserve. 2. The forest is the world's biggest after the Amazon. Now Britain and Norway have created a £108m fund to help protect it from logging and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Congo basin forest is home to around 50 million people in six countries including Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Congo-Brazzaville. The Congo basin forest is twice the size of France and exceeded in size only by the Amazon. It is estimated that logging - much of it illegal - destroys an area the size of 25,000 football pitches every week. The UN estimates that at present rates two-thirds of the forest will have vanished by the year 2040.

$50 a Barrel for OIL!? Court Case Lost by Exxon to Chavez!
righthand
by righthand  6-20-2008    3
Two events that were not reported in the US 'fair and balanced' media. The $50 a barrel item was on Monday April 3, 2006. The UK court case that Exxon lost against Venezuela was published on March 25, 2008. The commencement of the case was covered extensively but the outcome and loss was ignored. Wouldn't it be nice now to have a barrel of oil at $50? Pity politics got in the way of business for once.
