POPSWhat if everyone had only 1 phone number? With the introduction of Google Voice, it seems that we could all have 1 master phone number that we give out...and then that phone number will be used to ring all our numbers when it's called. I'm too tired to think of the negatives of this, but seems like it could be very helpful.

POPSThe Mind-BlackBerry Problem - Why we think we can function in two worlds at once?? "If we don't want this two-worlds experiment to be regulated nature's way—by killing people—then we'd better regulate it ourselves. Here are a few proposed rules of the road. Multitasking is a glorious gift. We can't ban it, nor should we. Want to phone your spouse or your office while walking? Fine. The only life at stake is yours. Want to turn on your car radio or music player? Fine. Listening is easier than talking, and you can mentally or physically shut it off when necessary. Want to chat with your passenger? Fine again. Studies indicate that passenger conversations are less distracting than phone calls, apparently because you're sharing and often referring to the same environment.

POPSSorry Got To Go (someone is at the door) This is so neat. Need to end a phone call fast, select Door Bell sound. Although, may not work with a modem. If you're tired of getting stuck on the phone with an endless talker and don't know how to cut the conversation off, this site's for you. POPSMichelle Obama serves soup, Nation misses the point
Conservatives are all over this photo. Not because the first lady is promoting volunteerism by actually doing rather than talking, but because someone in line has a cell phone. The assumptions are: 1-the homeless cannot possibly afford a cell phone, 2-this man is homeless yet owns an expensive cell phone with all the bells and whistles and is therefore cheating the ‘system’. This article answers these assumptions very well by debunking common misconceptions many of us have of the homeless and poor. Those conservatives we most often hear from (the ones yelling the loudest) have jobs (paying much more than minimum wage), a comfortable home to go to after their job, drive a well-maintained vehicle, enjoy all the trappings that money provides, and generally are out of touch with the majority of working class people. From the article: “you'd have to be a magician to stretch a minimum-wage job to cover housing, transportation, food, healthcare, childcare and other incidental expe

POPSThe Perfect Husband Had a similar experience over my phone one day. Who I thought was my friend Jim called me by name when I answered the phone. The voice didn't sound familiar so I inquired of his name & he said, "Jim". "You sound a little different too." he said & to which I replied I had a cold & maybe that was the problem. Anyway he asked "Are we still getting together tonight at the same time & place?" "Sure." I said & that was it. Later on that day I bumped into Jim(My real friend) & it turns out he didn't call me earlier. The weird part is we were going to meet that night at the same place we usually meet! We both laughed & laughed at that & what the chances were that our names, time & place would coincide.

POPSIn Africa- The cellphone is the single most transformative technology for development" "Democratic Republic of Congo, with a population of 60 million, there are just 10,000 fixed-line telephones, but more than one million mobile subscribers. In Chad, the fifth-least-developed country in Africa, usage jumped from 10,000 to 200,000 in three years. At the end of 2007 there were more than 280 million mobile phone subscribers in Africa, representing a penetration rate of 30.4%." "now they can call around and know what the prices are. They can call their relatives in town, for example, and ask how much is a bunch of bananas, so they get an idea of what the price is for their produce"

POPSFuture Devices Could Power Themselves
There are other mechanisms other than "pushing" that can generate pressure waves to spark energy in piezoelectric materials. Imagine a self-powering cell phone, for instance, that never needs to be charged because it converts sound waves produced by the user into the energy it needs to keep running. Some night clubs in Europe now feature dance floors built with piezoelectrics that absorb and convert energy from footsteps in order to help power lights in the club. And a Hong Kong gym reportedly is using the technology to convery energy from exercisers to help power its lights and music. Tahir Cagin and his partners study the piezoelectric concept. For this project, they fine-tuned piezoelectric materials with nanoscale dimensions . Studying piezoelectrics in microscopic units is a relatively new endeavor, but a key step along the road toward inventing a self-powering cell phone and other portable, high-tech devices, which contain these minute components already.

POPSFuture Phones to Read Your Voice Experts say the industry needs a new wave of interface technologies to transform how we relate to our phones. The traditional keypads and scroll wheels will give way to haptics, advanced speech recognition and motion sensors.

POPSThe World Becomes the Web It's already a reality in Japan through the KDDI network there, using software from GeoVector Corp. in San Francisco. Pamela Kerwin, GeoVector's vice president of strategic development, explained that LBS requires that the phone has GPS circuitry, so it knows where it is. Additionally, it needs to have a compass so it knows where it is pointed.
