POPSThe cognitive neuroscience of magic Magic combines multiple principles of attention, awareness, trust and perception to both overtly and covertly misdirect the audience. Whether they are used for performance art or as a means to illicitly separate victims from their money and valuables, the accomplished performer uses robust and intuitive manipulative devices that are of great interest to neuroscientists pursuing the neural underpinnings of cognition, memory, sensation, social attachment, causal inference and awareness.

POPS12 Weirdest Things Ever Insured Whiskey company Cutty Sark was offering a $1.5 million prize for capturing the mythical Scottish lake inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster, alive. They then took out home insurance against paying this prize, just in case someone actually did capture it alive. During the 1930s, then 13 year old Harvey Lowe insured his hands for $150,000, which was a large sum of money at the time. Harvey was the Yo-Yo World Champion of that era, having been playing since he was 12. He is still yo-yoing and filling up his current account to this day.

POPSGuy rapes a 10 year old, he gets 2 years, serves 10 months. He gave Fenn concurrent two-year and 18-month sentences, but he will be free in eight weeks after serving eight months in prison awaiting sentence. Wright is already free as Judge Hall had already given him a nine-month sentence for inciting the girl to perform a sex act. Dr Michele Elliott, director of Kidscape said the decision had left her "lost for words". She said: "It takes us back to the 1950s when the victim was blamed if they were dressed provocatively. "No one in my opinion could mistake a 10-year-old child, even dressed up, for a 16-year-old. They are just trying very hard to find excuses. "You can never blame a child victim for sexual abuse when excusing the abuser of any kind of abuse." The NSPCC added: "There is no excuse for having sex with a 10-year-old, no matter how she dresses." This guy & his accomplice deserves to be shot. I'm sick and tired of child rapists getting next to nothing for their crimes.

POPSIn TV Interview, Cheney Confessed to War Crime "What occurred in the last eight years was an assault on who we are," Turley said. "I think that President-elect Obama's going to have to decide whether he wants power without principle or whether he wants to start with a true change, to say that no matter where an investigation will take us, if there are crimes to be found they will be prosecuted." Personally, I vote for the latter. The neocons came up with a lot of creative legal arguments to excuse torture and we ought to make them test those arguments in a criminal court. I think they'd find that their arguments were BS and that they are, quite literally, criminals. I also think that we ought to make it 100% clear that working in the White House isn't a free pass to commit war crimes. We're a nation of laws, not men, and those who break the law should have to answer to the law -- no matter who they are. That's what you call "justice."

POPSWhales trapped in Ice A real sense of tragedy. What is interesting is while feeling for these whales, we know that they are to die, so one cannot condemn the hunters, and yet..

POPSThe Saddest Sad Songs Of All Time! I picked a few of my favourites. See the list and lyrics at the site. I couldn't get through life without music as a backdrop. Where would we be without it? If you need a rest from politics, just copy/paste a title and go youtubing . Even sad songs can make you happy. I heard this song when I was a little girl and my Dad told me it was about a dog (that probably drowned) and I bawled my eyes out! I still do! :D   Anyway, remember. Jumping off cliffs not allowed! . ;) Clip Song (Not sad, even!)

POPSKeith Olbermann calls out Rudy Guiliani This is one of the most powerful, passionate statements by a tv media figure that i've ever seen. Personally, i think Giulliani is a fraud. I lived in new york city during 9/11. And there is no doubt that Giulliani did a fine job maintaining calm. And i totally respected him for it. But i have not only lost that respect, i now completely disrespect him because he is so happy and proud to flaunt his leadership role that day.

POPSThe survival value of music And Pinker isn't the only skeptic. Boston Pops maestro Keith Lockhart conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra while he, a few musicians, and a portion of the audience were wired with monitors that tracked their heart rate, muscle tension, respiration, and other bodily signals of emotion. Yet though Lockhart was happy to make himself Levitin's guinea pig, he confesses to be ultimately uninterested in the origins of music. "It's enough for me to know that music does have a distinct emotional reaction in almost everybody that no other art form can boast of," he says. "I've never particularly wanted to know why that happens."

POPSBaptists: Let Ellison swear on the Qur'an A strongly-worded editorial from the Baptist Studies Center on why Congressman-elect Ellison ought to be allowed to use the Qur'an for his swearing-in ceremony, and why religious freedom and disestablishmentarianism are historically key Baptist principles.

POPSChristians Only In Congress, Please Republican Congressman Bill Sali says having a Muslin in the House of Representatives and a Hindu prayer being offered in the Senate just goes too far. The only way to maintain the U.S. is to stand by its founding Christian principals and to ask for the grace of the Christian God. The Hindi and Muslim Gods are different and do not count in our political system. Are we still wondering why the rest of the world is laughing at us and why the Muslim world hates us?

POPSPennsylvania Gov. Rendell: Obama Coverage Was "Embarrassing" At that point, PBS's Judy Woodruff, who was moderating the moderators event, said: "Why don’t we let Governor Rendell sit down." That was met with applause from the crowd of big-time media figures, which included Arianna Huffington, Gwen Ifill, Al Hunt, and Chuck Todd. Woodruff allowed Brokaw to respond, and in defending the network, he said that Matthews and Keith Olbermann are "not the only voices" on MSNBC.

POPSFOX NEWS IS FAIR AND BALANCED... HUH?
The Fox News or better yet Fox Noise (as Keith Olbermann calls it) is and always has been a joke to me. I use to watch it during the early lead up days to Bush's illegal war against Iraq. Until one day they attempted to demonize Saddam Hussein one step further than they already had with their constant pummeling of HE KILLED HIS OWN PEOPLE http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article1779.htm SADDAM HUSSEIN HAD WMD'S POINTED AT AMERICA and of course, when no weapons were found they bludgeoned their viewers with IT WAS AMERICA'S JOB TO LIBERATE IRAQIS FROM A BRUTAL RULER. But that day when I tuned in (for the last time) and saw a pathetic little dog staggering against a wall and the voiceover said SADDAM HUSSEIN CONDUCTED POISON GAS TESTS ON DOGS... I spoke the word I use frequently when I'm in a state of extreme perplexity... HUH? Let's see now, who was this bit of propaganda directed at? Oh, I know it was for those who don't become alarmed at human beings becoming collateral damage
