    What is a Man?
    Aribeth
    by Aribeth  7-18-2009    10
A man has had liquor enough in his life that he can order a drink without sounding breathless, clueless, or obtuse. When he doesn't want to think, he orders bourbon or something on tap. A man welcomes the coming of age. It frees him. It allows him to assume the upper hand and teaches him when to step aside. He does not rely on rationalizations or explanations. A man gets the door. Without thinking. He stops traffic when he must. A man knows how to lose an afternoon. Drinking, playing Grand Theft Auto, driving aimlessly, shooting pool. He knows how to lose a month, also. He understands the basic mechanics of the planet. Or he can close one eye, look up at the sun, and tell you what time of day it is. Or where north is. He can tell you where you might find something to eat or where the fish run. He understands electricity or the internal-combustion engine, the mechanics of flight. A man is comfortable being alone. Loves being alone, actually. He sleeps.

This is an entertaining and fairly level headed “what the future will bring” piece. It covers the promise and perils of a pretty diverse set of topics: nuclear power, space travel, power transmission, aviation, food production, urban growth, race relations and even (sort-of) outsourcing.

Is atheism a belief? A refresher.
    Oortcloud
    by Oortcloud  10-14-2007    6
The bottom line is that regardless of what magical sky fairy you do or do not believe in, there is ample evidence to indicate there are basic moral guidelines that all humans have an instinctive nature to follow. The most obvious involves avoiding unnecessary harm to other creatures. By doing so, we reduce the likelihood of unnecessary harm being inflicted upon ourselves, and you don't need to believe in god to recognize that pain and discomfort is something worth avoiding wherever possible. For more information, see Atheism for further details on categories of atheists.

"My friends and relatives thought of me as a somewhat eccentric half-mad inventor attempting the impossible," said Mirhejazi who has brought his invention to Dubai. Nevertheless, one friend was prepared to rustle up enough cash to put the project under starter’s orders. "It took me 26 months to build the vehicle in my workshop in Tehran. I got it patented by a special department in Iran after professors at universities there attested that it was a scientific invention."

    Baboon Spiders of Africa
    michellezm
    by michellezm  7-13-2007    9
Bombing down the freeway a few years ago, a movement caught my eye, it was a baboon spider emerging from underneath my dashboard. Imagine my surprise! I couldn't stop and had to keep driving, praying all the while that it did not venture up the steering column. Fortunately it sat on the speedometer and started at me with malevolent eyes. I screamed into the nearest turnoff which happened to be a service station, leaped out and danced around as if I were on fire. Fortunately for me a man of some guts and substance took control of the situation and gently coaxed it out. Generally I'm not averse to spiders, but that 'up close and personal' was more than I could bear. It looked like the spider in the last picture. Very beautiful - at a civilized distance.
