    Passed Green Jobs/ Green NY
    rachaelkeriwilliams
    by rachaelkeriwilliams  7-28-2009
According to this the program is already in effect, but specific NYS communities have been selected for the funding through a "competitive solicitation process" and the funds should eventually trickle through local contractors, utilities, and community groups that partner w/ a rep sample of some poor people or that have an office in a poor neighborhood. ...I really shouldn't be so cynical, it is just so hard not to be when you can't afford a hot water heater.

Cooperative Business goes through the (Green) Roof

Awesome. Farms on the roof in NYC. This program trains and supports adults- really filling a need, not that I want to knock teen programs, but it seems like that's all anyone in Buffalo ever wants to do.

Software to take control of chronic illness

Awesome! Now let me just find an open source program that is available for free. Rather than having to go through the hoops of getting medicare/ medicaid/ tbi waiver to pay for something that will empower me and REALLY help me recover. Would also be a good addition to a health-related participatory research project. Maybe the company wants to start an open source branch to speed up the development of customized versions- well, since I haven't even been to the site yet, I will do that before any further speculation.

    Public Participation GIS
    rachaelkeriwilliams
    by rachaelkeriwilliams  10-2-2008    1
This approach to development of the city and surrounding areas is exactly what we need. The people must be empowered with the information that is typically held by the government, development organizations, and those with developed computer skills and high-speed internet access. PPGIS will facilitate the participation of marginalized members of society in the creation of the ecocity. It can be integrated with accessibility software and accessed from libraries, computing centers, and other designated points in the neighborhood, and should be integrated with a user-friendly interface —such as google maps, rather than the more technologically and geographically -oriented interface employed in typical online GIS sites.

    SBOA Firm has Co-Op experience
    rachaelkeriwilliams
    by rachaelkeriwilliams  10-1-2008
The firm working on the SBOA project has experience woking with cooperative development, apparently. Just perusing their website I have noticed that they list several "citizen/ cooperative groups" from their past work. This gives me hope that an attempt to talk to them about a community participatory development project in the SBOA, resulting in extensive urban green space, cooperative housing, integrated with ecodesign, living machines, food production, and historical preservation— might not be fruitless.
