POPSCenter for Radical Urban Sustainability in Trouble I wonder how many buildings the City of Austin owns, that are not kept up to code? Why don't they help keep good tenants in and save themselves the trouble of taking over another property? Then again, may be there's a new buyer hoping to put up some condos after cutting all the trees down. That would be the plan here in Buffalo!

POPSMarvelous Mulberry Tree Thinking about becoming the new Johnny Appleseed- Rachael Mulberribranch, or something. This awesome mulberry tree is growing from between the cracks of the sidewalk at the house next door to me in the ghetto. The negligent landlords have decided that people don't like trees, so they cut every tree down to a stump, every year. But, this mulberry tree had the most amazing fruit last year, attracted two kinds of humingbirds, and so many other species of birds rarely seen on the West side of Buffalo, NY. Maybe some cuttings planted in vacant lots will bring some life back to the hood.

POPSSocial Software- web2.0 Contributes to...
thinking towards the web empowering people in real ways, to make real world changes, that were otherwise impossible. using social networking sites for more than simple games, like relationship-building tools for people unable to leave their homes, and map tagging that creates real-time records of abandoned properties, vandalism, etc., giving people in poverty a tool to manage their collective knowledge of the neighborhoods in which they live.-- What I wouldn't give for a web-based interface that would allow members of my community to tag a City of Buffalo / erie county parcel-overlay with pertinent information, such as ...kids coming in and out of vacant property at 300 Potomac Pky @ date and time OR demolition starting at the old house on Main Street cermaic tile being thrown out OR aspestos left uncovered in North Buffalo residential district for 1 week with link to pics and more information about the harmful effects of aspestos OR , OR, AND, AND --it will be beautiful!

POPSTrees to be Mulched Awesome move by the city of Buffalo! Too bad mulch won't be available to any city resident that want it. They should also give information about how much the city is reducing our carbon footprint by composting/ mulching trees. I hope that Lardon Construction is doing the service for free. If the city website had links to both Lardon and Grassroots gardens that would be super cool, but perhaps too much to hope for.

POPSSBOA Firm has Co-Op experience The firm working on the SBOA project has experience woking with cooperative development, apparently. Just perusing their website I have noticed that they list several "citizen/ cooperative groups" from their past work. This gives me hope that an attempt to talk to them about a community participatory development project in the SBOA, resulting in extensive urban green space, cooperative housing, integrated with ecodesign, living machines, food production, and historical preservation— might not be fruitless.

POPSbuffalo does nothing to reduce carbon footprint A shame. There is still a press release about mayor Brown signing this agreement after he took office, but we still have no action plan in place. The city is concerned about attracting green business, but there has been little effort to create sweeping changes that are necessary to develop the type of community these sought-after businesses would like to move into. Buffalo is not conducive for green business the way it is right now, because there is just too much work to be done. We have no green infrastructure. Hardly any workers skilled in green jobs, construction, too few citizens who have any idea what it is to live sustainably— we hardly recycle, our rainwater still blends with our shit, and permeable pavement is practically illegal in the hippest neighborhood we have.

POPSGreen Schools Maybe I'm just missing something that has been going on behind the scenes, but it seems to me that the Buffalo Board of Education has not been incorporating rigorous standards into the massive rehabilitation of the schools which started a couple of years ago- but I will have to check on this a bit more. I think that it would probably be beneficial to halt the plans in order to incorporate more green strategies rather than continueing on at this point and then having to make changes in a couple of years when the government requires such measures of public facilities.

POPScost of paying public servants the city is actually paying employees with this 4-5million. If you take a look at the Artvoice published a month or so a go, you will see that the majority of CDBG funds are going to build and demolish houses with overhead costs that are 3* the amount of the funds that actually get houses built.

POPSGreen Demolishing... um, Washing Buffalo Why The Mayor of Buffalo is the Biggest Contributor to Greenhouse Gas in Buffalo, NY. Maybe they just don't understand that by sending perfectly above average sustainably harvested wood products to the dump and building new houses with unsustainably harvested wood they are damaging our planet as well as our culture. How can we as a city claim to be trying to woo green businesses when our actions and policies support this kind of hypocrisy?
