POPSNo words....Zionists are angels in comparison with this. The plight of the women of Walungu has been documented in remarkable video footage obtained by a Congo-born nurse and featured in a Guardian film . Walungu is just 40 miles from Bukavu, one of a handful of regional centres where the UN, international aid agencies and journalists have been based since fighting between Nkunda's militia and Congolese troops displaced 250,000 people in eastern Congo. Their purpose is to protect civilians and distribute aid, but the NGOs say it is often too dangerous to venture outside the towns. In Ninja, women and children go hungry. Humanitarian aid has not reached here, and there is no security.

POPSThe blog post that wouldn't die I want to talk about atheists and anger. This has been a hard piece to write, and it may be a hard one to read. I'm not going to be as polite and good-tempered as I usually am in this blog; this piece is about anger, and for once I'm going to fucking well let myself be angry. But I think it's important. One of the most common criticisms lobbed at the newly-vocal atheist community is, "Why do you have to be so angry?" So I want to talk about: 1. Why atheists are angry; 2. Why our anger is valid, valuable, and necessary; And 3. Why it's completely fucked-up to try to take our anger away from us. So let's start with why we're angry. Or rather -- because this is my blog and I don't presume to speak for all atheists -- why I'm angry.<< http://gretachristina.typepad.com/

POPSA Flawed Feminist Test "As a possible first Madame President, Hillary is a flawed science experiment because you can’t take Bill out of the equation. Her story is wrapped up in her marriage, and her marriage is wrapped up in a series of unappetizing compromises, arrangements and dependencies."

POPSThe real threat to "traditional" marriage: heterosexual couples who don't think the way they're supposed to The money quote: "There is a greater expectation that women will work, men will be more involved with their children, and household duties will be more evenly shared... In essence, straight couples are 'queering' heterosexual marriage... If neither partner conforms to his or her 'unique role,' heterosexual marriage starts to look like its same-sex counterpart and illustrates that those 'unique' gendered roles aren't as unique as the bishops claim they are. If in a heterosexual marriage a man can provide nurturing and emotional sensitivity and a woman can provide leadership and effective decision-making skills, could they not bring these traits to a same-sex marriage?"

POPSWhy Jimmy Carter left the Southern Baptist Convention Subservience of women to men is a false argument, dependent upon selection of certain verses of the Bible and the exclusion of many others. Suppressing female leadership is a cultural decision of male leaders, not an accurate reading of Scripture.

POPSMarried Men get Screwed; Boyfriends get Screwing/Scrubbing! A study published by Journal of Family Issues found that live-in boyfriends spend more time scrubbing and scouring than their married counterparts. According to related research, those couples who divide household chores most equally may also have better sex lives.

POPS"New" Afghanistan Legalized Rape, Starvation of Women Okay "There was a review process - Karzai came under huge pressure from all over the world to amend this law, but many of the most oppressive laws remain," Rachel Reid, the Human Rights Watch representative in Kabul, told the BBC. "What matters more to Karzai is the support of fundamentalists and hardliners here in Afghanistan whose support he thinks he needs in the elections." Women's groups say its new wording still violates the principle of equality that is enshrined in their constitution. It allows a man to withhold food from his wife if she refuses his sexual demands; a woman must get her husband's permission to work; and fathers and grandfathers are given exclusive custody of children.

POPSSaudi woman wants a divorce because her husband tried to sneek a look at her face
"She said her husband apologised and promised never to do it again, but she insisted she wanted a divorce. It is not the first example of Saudi husbands with wives forever shrouded in mystery. There was the case of Ali al-Qahtani whose wife had been wearing a face veil for the entire ten years of their marriage. When he tried to take it off she threatened to leave and only decided to stay after he swore never to try again. And neither the husband or children of Om Rabea al-Gahdaray, 70, have ever seen her face. It was a family tradition, also followed by her mother and sisters, which her husband accepted and never tried to change, she said. When asked how she could have children without her husband ever seeing her face, she replied: "Marriage is about love, not faces." I never knew that some Moslem women hid their faces from their own husbands (and children), I thought it was only in public that they they were covered. I learn something every day.

POPSWomen Go 'Missing' by the Millions Young girls die disproportionately from neglect because food and medical attention is given first to brothers, fathers, husbands and sons. In countries where women are considered the property of men, their fathers and brothers can murder them for choosing their own sexual partners. These are called "honor" killings, though honor has nothing to do with it.

POPSShould Chimpanzees Be Given Human Rights? This case promises to be very interesting! If a chimpanzee can be declared a person, then there's nothing in the way of a person becoming an ape--and I'm not just talking about a retroactive status applied to ex-husbands. In fact, I predict a surge in trans-specied people, who will eagerly go over to the side of the chimps. This bit is just BEGGING for me to make a GWB joke...but I won't. .:D

POPS"Nurse-in" at Pennsylvania mall After a nursing mother was kicked out of a Pennsylvania mall, several hundred people return to stage a "nurse-in". 36 states have laws protecting mothers' right to breastfeed in public, but not PA -- yet.

POPSWomen With the horror of the recent "honor" killing in Georgia as the backdrop, I'm inspired to remind everyone that women die at the hands of male family members every day in the US. In fact, 4 times a day. I'm tired of the Right acting like they really care about women and gender equality. The only mention of women in the 2004 Republican platform is their insistence that if a woman gets pregnant, by law she'll stay that way until delivery. I went to a number of right wing websites and typed the words "violence against women" into their search engines. If any stories were listed at all, they were about honor killings in the Muslim world. The Right wrap their "concern" for women in the cloak of anti-Islamic rhetoric concerning honor killings and are dumb, deaf, and blind to all else. Enough. Islam is not the problem. Patriarchy is.
