His body hung over the River Thames for over 2 years....I guess crime didn't pay for Captain Kidd. This will be a cool underwater public preserve.

Stem Cell Breakthrough Could Stifle Research
    neochonetes
    by neochonetes  11-28-2007
Cure causes cancer The new method is preliminary and fraught with problems. Yamanaka first performed this technique on mice in 2006, and most of the mice developed cancer. This is because the special genes are carried into the cell by a virus, which can spread to other parts of the body and initiate rapid cell growth elsewhere. Also, the faux-embryonic stem cells don't work as well at growing and expressing proteins as the real things.

This is really cool; discovering how the ability to choose is part of our innate makeup. For people interested in science/medical research, HHMI has a great website and newsletter that is written for the general public; also super pictures, animations and other media

After reading Pokkets clip on Indonesia and the tree planting scheme, I found this. It appears that the Indonesians are planting trees as crops, not forest replacement.

Piecing Together the History of Art

Cuesta Benberry was a serious scholar at a time when few of our technological conveniences were available. She started her research in the 1960's. This period leading up to the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration of the United States of America was the flashpoint for much of the serious interest in the history of popular or folk interests, such as woodworking, quiltmaking, cooking, gardening/farming, and the history of many sustainable habits of thought and action. These same interests are now in the forefront of the popular imagination of a new generation.

I saw an interview, on August 2, 2007, of this medical research team on the PBS Charlie Rose show. I was very heartened to hear them discuss how they planned their research and their inclusion of an ethicist on their team.
