POPSBuild a Fence, Look Good, Oops! Good thing no one suggested that we build a fence to keep Osama bin Ladin on one place so we could find him. The Australians built 3 fences to keep rabbits out of Western Australia. It took 6 years to build and was a bit over 2,000 in length. In 7 years, we have not been able to build 27 miles of fence using private contractors. Grin - maybe Congress should have gone for the Public Option, copied the CCC of the Depression Years, and hired a bunch of out of work construction workers put them under the supervision of US Forestry trail builders and just do it!

POPSICE: Wait, wait! Let me shoot myself in the other foot too! Sigh... We had a process that enabled children and parents to be reunited fairly quckly. Now to "protect" kids, we are going to lock them up for months before they can be returned to their parents. I guess Homeland Security cloned Dumb and Dumber many more times than we thought they did.

POPSE-verify, LA, and Nativism
Anna Gorman is a good reporter and will probably add to this at a later date. The e-verify proponent boasts of 11,000 California employers using e-verify as if the number is very significant. The SBA (Small Business Administration) reported in 2006 that there were 718,000 small businesses (under 500 employees) in California - accounting for 93% + of the California workforce. So, is the number of users in a year very impressive - not so much. What employers are most likely to employ people who may or may not be in the country legally - small businesses. How many mistakes will they make just in entering the name to be checked. Will it be fair or even make sense for employers to forget the e-verify and just not consider anyone with a name that sounds "foreign" for employment. In a nation of immigrants, how easy will that be? It's more likely that the easiest target of the day - Hispanics - will be shunned, profiled, discriminated against - don't you think? If this was 1840

POPSUnemployment & Immigration Tight? Not So Much While there might be some connections in limited cases. Mexican, Nicaraguan, Honduran, or Guatemalan construction workers are not taking jobs from anyone - Wall Street took care of that - there is no construction of new homes. Immigrants are not closing down General Motors factories or supplanting US workers - those jobs went to China and then went nowhere as consumers stopped buying their cars. Read on.

POPSParticipate or Leave Immigration Reform to Others I participated in the first round of "discussion" on Dept of Homeland Security policies. It was not perfect or even easy but at least I know my voice has been heard by those who specifically carry out the general policies set by Congress and the President.

POPSDear Mr. President: Clean Up This Inhumane Mess; Now! You did not create this ugly mess of detention centers that has all the earmarks of being as bad as Walter Reed was for veterans. Place a priority on it and clean up and establish visible and enforceable rules of humane conduct in pubic and for-profit private facilities!

POPSCAR 54 Where Are You Model for ICE? Some of the strange goings on at ICE are just hard to believe and laughable, as long as you are not the one in prison unjustly, or strip searched and told you have to be a spy. Maybe Kafka is secretly still alive and writing scripts for ICE.

POPSLabor Trafficking Posing as Cultural Exchange Au Pairs in Europe and US are sometimes described as opportunities for young people to earn and learn in another culture. In too many case, however, it is just another way to get cheap labor that is vulnerable to wage, hours, and work conditions buse.

POPSDying for a Chance at Better Life These are the people who so want to come to America and a better life, that they risk their lives daily - and many don't make it. They are not what you picture when they are described by the hate mongers - they are people like you risking everything for their families and a life worth living and dying for.

POPSModern Know Nothing Loves to Hide His Hate Behind Front Organizations Seems he must have learned well from old time CIA and Communist methods of using reasonably sounding front organizations to gather up money and support for rabid anti-immigrant views and white supremacy beliefs. He even uses some fronts to advocate rigid immigration rule and help to convince West Africans to stay where they are. If it looks fair - sort of - but smells very conservative in some aspects - it might be a front for racists.

POPSAnti-Immigration Rap - In Barbados? Say It Isn't So! When times get tough, it seems, everywhere - even in beautiful Barbados - people start to think things will get better if the last ones to immigrate are forced to go home! If the Out of Africa theory that modern humans all developed and emigrated from the highlands of Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya... then once everyone is sorted out, the highlands will be too crowded and we will have to emigrate again. Why not say: well here we all are, let's work together to make it better - grin.

POPSA man should not die, ignored, alone in ICE jail The immigration reform debate is not black and white, it is mostly shades of gray. One solution - put them in jail until they are deported does not work in all cases, especially when it leads to neglect and un-necessary death.

POPSWho's in Charge of Immigration? Roger Rabbit? Sorry to defame a smart rabbit - but stories like this seem to be best explained as a bad movie plot instead of some Bush League hold-over who doesn't care who gets hurt in trying to embarass Obama Administration by using the"book" as an excuse to just be dumb and mean!

POPSImmigration needs humane reform She's a U.S. citizen, and her children are, too, but the day before Good Friday last year, the man in their lives was deported, she said. He had been here nine years and worked as a roofer, Bautista said. "I ask you, if you were in my shoes, would you like to see your family separated as we are?" she asked the crowd.

POPSIt's the Money Honey - Cities and Counties Getting Cash for Detaintees $140 a day for most detainees that we could keep track of until they leave by spending $18 a day for renting an electronic bracelet. 75% of detainees do not have any criminal record. So, was the last administration pumping up those in jail to "buy" support and look as if they were "doing something" about keeping us safe when most of the cash was being used to subsidize private jails who had many Republicans on their Boards of Directors. A billion spent last year here instead of many other good uses, or just give us back $1 billion!

POPSMany detainees spend months or years in U.S. detention centers An official Immigration and Customs Enforcement database, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, showed a U.S. detainee population of exactly 32,000 on the evening of Jan. 25. The data show that 18,690 immigrants had no criminal conviction, not even for illegal entry or low-level crimes like trespassing. More than 400 of those with no criminal record had been incarcerated for at least a year. A dozen had been held for three years or more; one man from China had been locked up for more than five years.

POPSSurviving Spouses Against Deportation Common sense is often in short supply at DHS and ICE. they are good at nit picking though and then hiding behind regulations and disregard any attention to equity in addition to equality in law.

POPSSupport Your Local Sheriff with Double Your Money for Fluff Arrests No comment really needed. The last President was subsidizing private and public US jails and Sheriffs for chasing down "hardened and violent" criminals who were also aliens. No bother about the fact that most criminals of that description are citizens. So, what's a sheriff to do to get the cash anyway? Look for (profile) those who look like illegal aliens driving through your local speed trap and cash in on the Federal pork!

POPSIf Leaders Don't Lead, Police Always Go for Small Fry How many bankers have ever been arrested for laundering drug money or supplying front money? Few. How many CEOs have been tried for importing illegal aliens? Do police get support for spending the time, people and money it takes to go after kingpins in drug and illegal alien smuggling and human trafficking? Not really, so the result of the story are not a surprise but just news of failed leadership as usual. We need to stop voting for get tough politicians who back off when the going gets close to their money supporters.

POPSIn ICE Detention = No abortion rights even for those raped! For two months, while Maria awaited her detention hearing, Alvarado says they met about once every two weeks to talk about the ordeal. Maria asked about her options for ending the pregnancy. “I can’t do it,” Alvarado remembers her saying. “The baby’s face will just remind me of him—the man who did this.” But Maria ran into a practice limiting the reproductive rights of ICE detainees. For pregnant women in immigration detention facilities, it is virtually impossible to obtain an abortion. According to Bassett, in fact, “Preliminary records indicated that during fiscal year ’08 and ’09 to date, no detainee has had a pregnancy terminated while in ICE custody.” Not a single one.
