US Energy and Natural Resouces Maze
    nedhamson1
    by nedhamson1  10-12-2009
Scan the more than 250 bills introduced this term in to the US House Natural Resources Committee and the 49 members of the committee and you begin to understand how difficult it is to enact large strategic changes in policy and why Congress might spend time building target shooting facilities on public lands or in wilderness sites. Consider what states have representatives on the committee and those that do not. Earmarking or "pork" then starts to become clear: "Give you a new energy policy? Sure - give me a new pier for Santa Monica." grin/groan.

    Learn with Performance/Social Artist Master

    by nedhamson1  10-5-2009
I could go on and on but my friend and colleague Frank Heckman comes about as close as one can to integrating artistry, athletics, flow, organizational development, deep social and planetary ecology, as I know. If you put Buckminster Fuller, Margaret Mead, Nina Simone, Rafael Nadal, and Mikhael Barishnakov all together That's sort of describes Heckman who had a Balinese grandmother, Dutch Admiral father, martial arts training from one of the last samari teachers, mountain climber, adopted by the Ojibwe as their Crowman brother. If you are a performance artist looking to reach new heights and stay there, you may want to meet and study with Frank.

Jamaca Bay Salt Marsh (NYC-area) Sinking
    nedhamson1
    by nedhamson1  8-4-2009
Delightful and thoughtful blog with her photographs. Salt Marshes sinking for a number of reasons but like the delta below New Orleans and the Everglades swamps, the chief reason is our (humans) changing natural water, mineral and sediment/soil flows by building dams, highways, suburbs and watering lawns, as well as filling swimming pools and growing crops that use more water than natural flora.

Yech! Totally destroying mountains to get at coal on the cheap is horrendous in terms of what it does to the local ecology but when it all washes down river to cities that get their drinking water from the Ohio and don't carbon filter their water as Cincinnati does and you have a recipe for more colon cancer, birth defects and lousy tea!

    The "Costs" of Deforestation
    nedhamson1
    by nedhamson1  1-6-2009
Deforestation "costs" - pandemic The "costs" of deforestation are much higher than the Mr. Brown or others think. In the very near future, it will become obvious that deforestation is driving new outbreaks of Yellow Fever, more resistant strains of malaria, dengue fever, Hanta, as well as Ebola. The "costs" soon will include regional, continental or global outbreaks of one or more of these diseases. And that means millions will die and will not have to worry about climate change anymore. Large systems respond strongly when over-population or some major eco-disruption seems to have occurred. And it is not just deforestation that drives this - huge new dam systems in India and China have certainly contributed to the outbreak of avian influenza.

The only part of this that is news, is that it took 7 plus years for this and other Inspector Generals to work up the courage to tell the truth. Once the debacle of Katrina began, it should have been obvious to everyone that ideology not competence, being law abiding, or having common decency was the hallmark of nearly all of the Bush League helpers.

Science and Greed Will Deliver Next Pandemic
    nedhamson1
    by nedhamson1  11-29-2008
Greed and science do not make good partners. Breed birds to supposedly be immune to one type of avian flu opens the door to millions of birds and perhaps people be wiped out by a disease that the genetically modified birds do not have any immunity to -- That's why nature favors diversity to protect the whole!
