Change or Die? I think so - I've seen too much already
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  Yesterday 7:37 PM
When I first went to Los Angeles, 1948, from 20 miles inland and up in the mountains in La Cresenta, you could look out and see Catalina Island - more than 20 miles from shore. In 1966, I worked in a little factory in South El Monte. In the morning, looking out of the loading dock, I could see some hills three miles away. By 3 PM, I could not see the hills because of the smog. That kind of change has taken place all over the world in all metropolitan areas. Guess what? The wind needs no passport. As we have fouled our nest, we have also done the same to those downwind.

Suicides in US Army Up - Nearly 5 Times Higher Than Civilian Population
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  11-18-2009
Separating news and spin designed to sell advertising and policy is not always easy but this only took 2 minutes of googling to find that 11 people per 100,000 is the average suicide rate. There are 548 thousand or so people in the US Army. If 200 suicides occur in the Army before year's end that will be 4-5 times higher than overall civilian population. It is still higher than expected if you look at high stress jobs and it is higher than it was a few years ago, as reported by the US Army. Could it be that they are facing two additional stresses that when combined drive more to depression and suicide? 1. Having to return to duty in Iraq or Afghanistan quicker and more often. 2. A recession that seems to say no civilian job is likely as an alternative to continued service.

Their plan was simply to use corn as central part of their culture. They will find that traditional food combined with traditional amount of exercise will give them and their children a healthier life. Traditional peoples around the world "adapted" to ways of living that kept them healthy. When they shift to a modern diet and much lower level of physical activity, the amount of diabetes and heart disease skyrockets.

The Geezer Flu Advantage - Finally an advantage of being a boomer geezer!
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  11-17-2009
Recent studies find that baby boomers over 55 who had earlier flus may/probably have some immunity to current H1N1. Smile - all they needed ot do was do a survey in the age group and ask who got the big Hong Kong or Asian flu in 1957-58, or 1967-68. Then ask those who said yes, how often they ever got the flu afterward. When you survive 3-6 weeks of fevers, dry heaves, etc, its seems you get a boat load of anitbodies and antibody memory. My bet is that those who survived the 1917-1918 flu had the same immunities. However... I still get the flu shots because when you get millions upon millions of ducks. geese, chickens and pigs together in live markets leading up to Lunar New Year (Jan/Feb) in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Korea - you have a live lab to create an entirely new version of flu. And now that there is a truly global poultry market, new versions of flu will no longer be limited to Asian starts. That is what was most novel about H1N1, it started in Northern H

Novel way to save world's forest "lungs"
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  11-17-2009
Poverty and lack of government infrastructure contribute to deforestation in many less-developed nations. This story is abot Guyana but the plight of poor farmers in Tanzania, is one of the reasons that soon, there will be no snow cap at all on Mt. Kilimanjaro. They cut down trees to plant harvest, land wears out, more forest is cut down and eventually less rainfall, less snow.

If you want to eat meat two or three times a day, then you are a fast-food junkie and will have more than enough health problems and you may be immune to hearing anything without a five-meat sub in your hand - grin. If more reasonable, look in the mirror - smile big or say yowie! Does you mouth look like a dog's, or cat's set of teeth? A Great White Shark? Get the point? You are not designed to eat meat two or three times a day. Eatiing stuff - regularly - that you are not designed for can't be good for you or the planet, can it?

The dumbest part is how well do they think she will perform in Afghanistan after this type of treatment? Sounds like old East German military not the US Army that usually does us proud without thinking about it. Fit it now!

The saddest part of this is that greed is also associated with the self-delusion that they are not really harming the planet and if they are - they have enough money to save themselves. Maybe, we should just call it lunacy since buying a self-contained cabin on Luna (aka: the moon) would be the only way to buy their way out ot eh consequences of their greed and stupidity.
