POPSWhy The Loudest are Often the Most Wrong This classic paper by Kruger and Dunning, Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments , examines the psychological reasons for the unfortunately common correlation between ignorance and confidence. We argue that when people are incompetent in the strategies they adopt to achieve success and satisfaction, they suffer a dual burden: Not only do they reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the ability to realize it. Instead, like Mr. Wheeler, they are left with the mistaken impression that they are doing just fine. As Miller (1993) perceptively observed in the quote that opens this article, and as Charles Darwin (1871) sagely noted over a century ago, "ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge." POPSWhat a Lady I'd like to take credit for this clip, but someone sent it to me because it was their favorite quote. Someone who had a lot of great ideas that I'm looking forward to hearing more of in the future. Go for it honey. :)

POPSA writer is a person who cares about words. When I was struggling as a freelance writer, this quote was my mantra. Often when I told people I was a writer, their response was, "What have you written?" Later, when I was conducting memoir writing and personal history, I used the quote again to convince my students they were writers.

POPSYep again! So true...so very damn true! You wonder why our military is stretched too thin...why we need Asia and the Middle East to bail out our banks...why we haven't embraced alternatives to oil like Asia and Europe have...why we haven't caught Bin Laden... Maybe it's because we keep electing people that seem cool to hang out with but aren't capable of leading the world's most powerful nation. How about George Bush and Sarah Palin start a tv show called "politicians that seem fun to hang out with" and we start electing more boring but gifted people as President.

POPSNotice quiet on ACORN? There's a reason ... Two McCain-paid voter registration firms are embroiled in real voter registration scams - including the destruction of Democratic registrations. One was arrested Saturday. Not Mickey Mouse, this is the real thing.

POPSNew Year's Love for the Clipmunity From Neil Gaiman-- because I cannot state anything as eloquently. I haven't been around for a year but I am happy to be part of this lovely community. I wish for nothing more than for everyone to have good lives outside our shared space. Enjoy the coming year, you fools! Indeed, may good madness come your way.
