POPSNo, Mr. President! We want teachers to be more like you!
Please read this article. I can relate to the shock, hearing your president make statements like this: "'All we want to do is get our teachers to aspire to excellence..." Most teachers responses are similar to Francesca's: "Thank you Mr. President. I never thought of that before. I thought my goal was to struggle to achieve mediocrity." Jonathon Kozol's new book , "Letters to a Young Teacher" should be A WAKE-UP CALL to the general public...while they silently watch those who have used the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) law as a tool to destroy public schools. NCLB was always an unfunded mandate, anathema to all but the NeoCon Republicans. Not listening to teachers about the problems facing our schools is like letting a surgeon cut off the good leg and leave the crushed leg to rot. There are excellent schools out there. They are the ones that are responsive to the needs of children and parents and the vast reservoir of knowledge held by American teachers...BEFORE the federal govern

POPSMuhammad Yunus on poverty I have mentioned the powerful economic work of Mr. Yunus, and how he over the years has continued to develop the concept of the micro-loan since the 1970's. The Grameen Bank exists because of the success of many poor people who have increased their economic value through the programs that go along with the micro-loan. Mr. Yunus developed a economic program for poor people that helps them with education that directly relates to their business...reading, accounting, communication, etc. Several books have been written about this process that Mr. Yunus has used effectively in his country of Bangladesh since 1976. I believe his work speaks to real economic development that encourages free enterprise. His latest book is called, "Banker to the Poor", and an interesting book about his process is called "A Billion Bootstraps : Microcredit, Barefoot Banking, and The Business Solution for Ending Poverty".

POPSDonorsChoose and Your Blog - Blogger Buzz This sounded like it would be particularly helpful to people who want to find a good option for donating; you pick the school, so you could pick a New Orleans school, your local school, or a relative's school. I don't know what countries participate, you will have to check it out. Please excuse! I just wanted to clip this while I have a chance.

POPSThe Quality School When I saw Bobby DelRay's clip of the The 7 Habits of Truly Miserable People, I had to clip another of Dr. Glasser's books. This is one of his books that teach practical, yet effective ways to treat yourself and others with respect. His ideas about education and schools have developed a group of schools that follow his philosophies. It's good for learning and for emotional health of children, students, and the entire education community.

POPSThe Legacy When I moved to my own home, my grandmother and I dug up some bulbs of one of the most amazing plants I have ever seen, the Surprise Lily. I shared them with my sisters and planted them in my yard. I will be moving soon and so will they. Plants, recipes and other traditions can provide an enduring legacy to the giver upon all who were touched by their lives. My grandmother is no longer with us, but her legacy remains. Using Amplify for such a project to begin or end Grandparents' Day would be a great way to encourage students to share their histories and legacies.

POPSWhen the Army Fought Against Veterans in Washington Hopefully, we can learn from our recent American History. As Americans we need veterans to be healthy and productive, and as veterans, they deserve whatever assistance we can give them. Yes, I am a Yankee Doodle Dandy! Thanks to my grandfather, WWI; uncle, died on USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor; two uncles in Korea; the rest of us were born in the few off times to be of assistance. So we are support troops.

POPSBe a Book Wizard! Embed this widget in your website or blog and anyone can use it to find children's literature by author, keyword or title. Scholastic has used Google gadgets to create an excellent teacher resource, a children's literature search engine. You can find your favorite book or search for titles to help you develop an instructional unit. While most titles are published by Scholastic, they do include other book titles from other publishers. When readers at your blog, wiki, or website use the Teacher Book Wizard Widget, they will be taken away from your site to the Scholastic site. I would like to see this widget open in another tab or window. While this is an inconvenience, it is not a major hindrance.

POPSWidgets Work! I would really appreciate your input on widgets. I am evaluating various weather widgets, so I can recommend them for school. I know I can't find all the sites, so I would appreciate any clips on the topic of widgets, especially for websites and blogs. So far, I found Weather Pixies that seems to be a great widget for elementary level.
