According to a 2006 report by the California EPA, secondhand smoke kills more than 50,000 people nationwide every year, including 3,400 deaths from lung cancer and 46,000 from heart disease. The costs to society are also staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States spends more than $167 billion each year in smoke-related healthcare costs. That's a price tag of $3,702 per adult smoker. A recent study found that smoking outdoors poses risks to nonsmokers, too. Ontario has passed a bill the government says is the strictest anti-tobacco legislation in North America. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits smoking in all workplaces and indoor public spaces. It is to take effect in June 2006.

"Now people are complaining about smoke going from one apartment to another apartment," Glantz said. Glantz said the people in other apartments could be harmed since the "level of toxicity in the smoke is very very high." Frankly, I like the smoke-free zones, but the science behind them may be a myth. "I think the documented health effects of secondhand smoke are enough. I don't think we need to be stretching the truth," Siegel said.

POPSSmoking Prohibited 50 Feet from San Francisco Muni Bus Stops I spoke to Muni's Accessibiltiy office, and was told that Mayor Gavin Newsom signed this last year. The trouble is, no one knows about it, and there are no No Smoking signs at the bus stops. Muni told me over the phone that they have asked Viacom to put No Smoking stickers on the bus shelters, but so far they have not. As a person suffering from a respiratory disease, I put it to you all collectively: How can we get the word out that smoking is no longer permitted at Muni bus stops? How can we protect the respiratory health of Muni passengers, especially the very young, the very old and the medically vulnerable like myself, at Muni stops, in a humane and respectful way? I favor education over enforcement, myself :) I am receptive to any ideas you all may have to accomplish clean, heathy air/smoke-free bus stops in San Francisco, and I am willing to help! Weigh in if you are, too :)
