POPSRotSchwarzGold - Germany's Flag Reinvented In a news story on Saturday reporting on the upcoming semifinal match between Turkey and Germany, the German ARD (Channel 1) news used a wrong image of the German flag, swapping the colours red and black. Apparently the mistake occurred because the editor was distracted by watching the football while creating the background image. My take on it: (a) unlikely story (b) far from offensive, I find it amusing (c) good thing it wasn't any other flag that the Germans misrepresented - that could've had some more crucial repercussions.

POPSNo One Receiving? This photo comes with a beautiful(ly dark) poem...go to source to read. Just realised that I can no longer clip text freely. Are we back to clipping full paragraphs only? Or is my computer/browser playing up?

POPSWord wars - susbsidiarity Having studied politics at University, I practically grew up with the concept of subsidiarity. It strikes me as absurd that this should be deemed a nonexistent word and one that should be abolished at that. If anything, can't it just be created for the sake of argument?

POPSgiant mouse scientists in Urugay have discovered the fossilised remnants of a skull believed to have belonged to a giant rodent that inhabited what is today South America a good two million years ago. Specs: estimated weight = around 1000 kg; skull length: 53 cm. don't supposed they'd be lured by a chunk of cheese cunningly hidden in a trap, would they?

POPSNgugi Wa Thiong'o on Kenyan election I urge you to go to the source and read the entire article. I am generally a huge advocate of t he 1000 character limit for clipping, however this time it has really made life difficult for me. Ngugi Wa Thiong'o is one of Kenya's great writers - this recent assessment is, in my opinion, a surprisingly objective take on the pre-election situation in December 2007. (Written before the elections took place)

POPSYou Darkness, from which I came You Darkness, from which I came, I love you more than all the Flames, Limiting the World, by shining all around us, (?) so that no one knows of the darkness. But the darkness actually holds everything: Form and Flame, Animals and me, How easily it gathers them, (?) Men and Might - And it is possible: a great Power is coming closer. I believe in Nights. *** by Ranier Maria Rilke (My own terrible German translation...)

POPSWhen it's on the tip of your toungue If a picture paints a thousand words, a metaphor paints a million pictures. I love metaphors,so I just thought I'd do a clip then I figured if it was going to fit I was going to have to be more specific. I am amazed at the way a metaphor can translate ideas between people, that may have been mutually exclusive. The way when there is a completely new concept related, we may be unable to find any direct analogy, but a metaphor can provide enough clues to transmit understanding. It can be a case of I can't explain exactly, but I can show you where to look. The way poets, musicians, artists, writers use metaphors creatively to allow new ideas or emotions to be accepted more easily.
