POPSDark Art Rizpah (‘coal’; ‘hot stone’) was the daughter of Aiah and one of Saul's concubines. "A famine, which lasted for three years, fell upon the land during the first half of King David's reign. This calamity was sent ‘for Saul and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.’ David inquired of them what satisfaction they demanded and was answered that nothing would compensate for the wrong Saul had done but the death of seven of Saul's sons. David accordingly delivered up the two sons of Rizpah and five sons of Merab, Saul's daughter. The Gibeonites put them to death and hung up their bodies at the sanctuary at Gibeah. Rizpah thereupon took her place on the rock of Gibeah, and for five months watched the suspended bodies of her children, to prevent them from being devoured by beasts and birds of prey, till they were at length taken down and buried by David." Edited extract from 'Easton's Bible Dictionary'

POPSViktor Schreckengost Vicktor Schreckengost (1906-2008) died on January 26, 2008 at age 101. Schreckengost taught industrial design at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) for more than 50 years, and was a professor emeritus at CIA until his death. He was also the youngest faculty member ever at CIA (then known as the Cleveland School of the Arts). He founded CIA's school of industrial design, the first of its kind in the country. He also enlisted in the Navy at age 37 to help the Allies in World War II. He was flown on secret missions to Europe where he used his modeling knowledge to help improve the radar used in the Battle of the Bulge. Later he helped design prosthetics for wounded soldiers. He retired from the Naval Reserves as a Captain. Schreckengost was also good friends with Cleveland's famed safety director Eliot Ness.

POPSColorful, pop-surreal, beautifully drawn art by Yosuke Ueno THANKS TO CLIPMARKS USER YOMOGI for this one; clip from this morning had a few images scaled down, but I really thought these were nice, so I captured the entire set at actual size.... a weird blend (but a lot of fun) beautifully drawn imageries, with a big dose of irrelevance - Yosuke Ueno is a young Japanese artist who paints in a style very close to the pop surrealist artists from America.

POPSIn the eye of the beholder. Anyone interested in forming an informal art club on CM? No great aims. Post a picture. Ask others what they think about it - what they see. Tell them what you think about it - what you see. We all try to broaden our minds on many subjects; this is just another.

POPSWell, I ain't taking my clothes off!
The writer Quentin Crisp spent the war years as an artist’s model at Derby School of Art. He described the job as “like being a civil servant, except that you are naked”. Cherie Blair sat for the painter Euan Uglow while she was a trainee barrister. When she and her husband moved into public life, Uglow judiciously decided to avoid exhibiting Striding Nude, Blue Dress. It reappeared in 2006, six years after his death. Her profile is distinguishable but the painting remains unfinished. Kate Moss was depicted reclining naked on a bed in Lucien Freud’s Naked Portrait 2002 while she was pregnant. The sitting was arranged after the model revealed in an interview that posing for Freud was one of her few remaining ambitions. A retired art teacher was shocked in 2003 when she found a sketch she had made decades earlier and realised it was Sean Connery, aged 22 and in a loincloth. “When he modelled there were always lots of girls in the classes,” she said.
