Heartening tale of a rescued baboon
michellezm
by michellezm  10-24-2008
“And their response was ‘can you take us to him?’ We immediately hiked back into the area with members from the 4X4 Club, S.P.C.A. and C.R.O.W. and removed the baboon from his prison. He was taken to C.R.O.W. and when he woke from his drugs we administered he must have thought he was in heaven! The first thing he saw was a huge bowl of fresh vegetables and fruit which he took great pleasure in devouring.” The baboon was named Drake, because he had come from the Drakensberg. And over the next few months at C.R.O.W, Drake regained his strength. “When he got his food he would eat everything. He literally - he was starved. He was a sack of bones when we picked him up and normally they weigh roughly about 50 kilos - a big grown male - and he weighed less than 20 kilos. He was literally a sack of bones when we picked him up, so his meals at C.R.O.W — he used to like them, ja!” Soon, plans were made to return Drake to the wild. (Rest of the story on the clip)

The rape of South African justice
michellezm
by michellezm  9-14-2008    5
Julius Memela and his ANC gang of thugs have threatened to kill the cartoonist, Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro). (They sounds like Islamic fundamentalist to me). Please note, neither Thabo Mbeki, Nelson Mandela nor Jacob Zuma have made any public statements to quell the anger or subdue the threats. The entire head and heart of this country is corrupt and the tragedy is, we have simply supplanted one tyrannical government with another. (Please note Jacob Zuma, our ex vice-president and now future president, a man with no class, integrity or even education, and many wives and countless children and very sticky sticky fingers, was acquitted of raping a young HIV positive LESBIAN female He never denied having sex with her (assuring us that he had taken the necessary precautions against HIV by showering afterwards). He claimed it was CONSENTUAL(sic) - with a LESBIAN!!!??? . And he got away with it. But the public have not forgotten. Hence Zapiro's portrayal of Zuma wearing a shower-ca

The Okapi - the mythical 'African unicorn'
michellezm
by michellezm  9-11-2008
"At the beginning of this century the okapi attained near-mythical status, with its ability to lick its own eyes, its large rounded ears with extremely acute hearing and its stripey hind legs. It was one of several animals belived to include the unicorn that roamed the deepest parts of the jungle but could not be caught by man. Phillip Gosse's book The Romance of Natural History, published in 1861, mentioned evidence of the okapi and some speculated that he had found evidence of the unicorn. It was not until 1901 that the okapi was fully understood and given its name."

Oh, and add to that our future president, Jacob Zuma, who is still facing bribery and corruption charges and was found not guilty of raping an AIDS-infected lesbian. (he assured all South Africans that he was in no danger of contracting HIV because he had immediately afterwards taken a shower) Life in South Africa is about as surreal as it gets.

The hippo who ditched his muddy waters to catch some sun and surf
michellezm
by michellezm  5-28-2008    15
'Hippos don't take well to darting' Mr van Schoor explains, 'they die of stress and this one would drown if we darted her in the water, and if we tried to dart her on the beach, she would run into the water for safety and again drown when the drug takes effect.' Hippos are usually captured using passive methods such as monitoring paths that they use regularly and setting up enclosures to lure them into. But Mr Van Schoor says that this hippo's only hope is to stop moving South. He added: 'If the hippo moves any further south there is huge risk, he is moving into residential areas and towards Durban where food for the hippo will become a problem'. Hippos are considered to be one of the most dangerous and aggressive of all animals and with this one coming into contact with humans and domestic animals, it could soon become a problem. Sadly If the hippo does not retrace his own steps and move back north, KZN says there is little hope for him.

Army on standby as South Africa waits on Mbeki
michellezm
by michellezm  5-21-2008
"He did, however, confirm that the acting president would have the authority to call in the army if necessary. The meeting between police and the SANDF in Johannesburg on Tuesday came after police commanders had apparently pleaded with the defence force for help since the beginning of the week. According to Beeld sources, police have not had enough resources - such as vehicles, weapons and patrols - at their disposal since the attacks began. The deployment of the army could have begun on Wednesday, had the order been approved by the president. Only the president, according to Article 201 of the Constitution, can authorise the army to work together with the police. Show of force Army units whose soldiers are deployed must get their orders from the defence force's joint operations centre. According to informed sources, the army's planned actions will revolve around a show of force and military presence to make combating the violence easier for the police. The poli

Saudi woman wants a divorce because her husband tried to sneek a look at her face
michellezm
by michellezm  5-19-2008    6
"She said her husband apologised and promised never to do it again, but she insisted she wanted a divorce. It is not the first example of Saudi husbands with wives forever shrouded in mystery. There was the case of Ali al-Qahtani whose wife had been wearing a face veil for the entire ten years of their marriage. When he tried to take it off she threatened to leave and only decided to stay after he swore never to try again. And neither the husband or children of Om Rabea al-Gahdaray, 70, have ever seen her face. It was a family tradition, also followed by her mother and sisters, which her husband accepted and never tried to change, she said. When asked how she could have children without her husband ever seeing her face, she replied: "Marriage is about love, not faces." I never knew that some Moslem women hid their faces from their own husbands (and children), I thought it was only in public that they they were covered. I learn something every day.

Birds - Indian Mynahs
michellezm
by michellezm  5-18-2008    10
"From time to time I am asked (in what capacity I am never sure) how to humanely get rid of Indian mynahs. This alien species is slowly invading South Africa's eastern side. Town after town is falling to these raucous, aggressive birds that behave like Liverpool soccer fans. The first mynahs in South Africa were released in Durban in the 1890s from the top of a bus. A sailor had captured them in India and had tried in vain to sell them. They have since multiplied with biblical enthusiasm."

Hundreds Fleeing as Anti-Immigrant Mobs Ravage South African

"Eric Goemaere, the head of Medecins Sans Frontieres in South Africa, said his staff was helping to treat people with bullet wounds and back injuries from being thrown out of windows. The humanitarian group is also known as Doctors Without Borders. He said Johannesburg's Central Methodist Church, home to hundreds of Zimbabweans, was under siege overnight and that police had told people they should be prepared to defend themselves. "It's a crisis," he said. He called on the South African government to declare Zimbabweans — there are believed to be up to 3 million in South Africa — as refugees and give them proper protection". All this goes to highlight the dismal failure that is our president, Thabo Mbeki and his corrupt government.

Beer has gone to the dogs

"Imported from Holland, where it is called Kwispelbier - "tail-wagging beer" - it is being sold at £1.99 for a 33cl bottle. Made using a traditional brewing process, the drink contains malt barley extract. A spokesman for Pets at Home said: "While initially people may think of the drink as a novelty, it makes a delicious treat for a thirsty dog. "It also encourages drinking, which is good for the kidneys, and is a great source of vitamin B. "It means pets are even more a part of family life as they can enjoy a beer, too."

British and American diplomats in roadside standoff with Zimbabwe police
michellezm
by michellezm  5-13-2008
"McGee climbed onto the hood of the car while his aide snatched the keys from the ignition, then the diplomats used their mobile phone cameras to take photographs of the officer. The confrontation was "a message to us, to try to control what we are doing," said U.S. Embassy spokesman Paul Engelstad, who was among around 50 diplomats and journalists on the tour. Japanese, EU, Dutch and Tanzanian envoys and an Associated Press reporter were also in the convoy. McGee noted the government has denied repeated reports from opposition officials and human rights groups of government-orchestrated violence against the opposition. "The government has said, 'Present us with proof.' I think today we have done just that. "We do have concrete proof of what is happening in the countryside and the government will have to listen," Mr McGee said."
