POPSA Conversation With Gore Vidal Unfolds: ‘We’ll Have A Dictatorship Soon In The US’ He has crossed every boundary, I say. “Crashed many barriers,” he corrects me. Last year he famously switched allegiance from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama during the Democratic nomination process for president. Now, he reveals, he regrets his change of heart. How’s Obama doing? “Dreadfully. I was hopeful. He was the most intelligent person we’ve had in that position for a long time. But he’s inexperienced. He has a total inability to understand military matters. He’s acting as if Afghanistan is the magic talisman: solve that and you solve terrorism.” America should leave Afghanistan, he says. “We’ve failed in every other aspect of our effort of conquering the Middle East or whatever you want to call it.” The “War on Terror” was “made up”, Vidal says. “The whole thing was PR, just like ‘weapons of mass destruction’. It has wrecked the airline business, which my father founded in the 1930s.

POPSObama to Meet High-Powered Aides for Afghan Review
were the top ranking civilian officials expected for a bracing session on a war some supporters fear could swamp Obama's presidency. War commander General Stanley McChrystal, who warned in a leaked report that the conflict could be lost within a year without more troops, was also due to to take part, either in person or by video link-up, the White House said. Other top military brass included were General David Petraeus who heads US central command, Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Director of National Intelligence Admiral Dennis Blair. CIA chief Leon Panetta was also due to take part, along with Richard Holbrooke, the US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as the US ambassadors to Islamabad and Kabul. Obama warned after meeting NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday that the United States could not fight the battle in Afghanistan alone, in remarks apparently aimed at European partners.

POPSMuch Of Traditional Journalism Went Backwards
and were so badly in the tank for one candidate in 2008 that 90 percent of the public can see it. As ABC’s Michael Malone wrote in October of 2008: I also happen to believe that most reporters, whatever their political bias, are human torpedoes . . .and, had they been unleashed, would have raced in and roughed up the Obama campaign as much as they did McCain’s. That’s what reporters do, I was proud to have been one, and I’m still drawn to a good story, any good story, like a shark to blood in the water. So why weren’t those legions of hungry reporters set loose on the Obama campaign? Who are the real villains in this story of mainstream media betrayal? The editors. The men and women you don’t see; the people who not only decide what goes in the paper, but what doesn’t; the managers who give the reporters their assignments and lay-out the editorial pages. They are the real culprits. Picture yourself in your 50s in a job where you’ve spent 30 years

POPSNew Obama Indoctrination Song For School Children: THE OBAMA SONG
We began to write the song after watching the Inauguration. Our school day is packed bell to bell with academics, but were usually able to spend the last five minutes of singing songs as short ELD (English Language Development) activities. Day by day we used this tiny window of time to brainstorm lyrics. As the song took shape, the children became more and more proud of their accomplishment. It soon morphed into a tribute to MLK and others honored for their work towards social justice. By February the song was done. We got requests to come and perform from adjacent classrooms that heard it coming from our room at the end of the day. Their egos boomed. I decided to make it something they'd never forget by producing the video. Nobody forced the children to participate--in fact a few sat it out. When it was finished, they were hoping the President himself would see it and wanted to be able to show it to friends and relatives.

POPSGood Slogan,“End of the Road, 2010!” Catchy
OK, forget that last bit for a minute … there’s no indication they can make anything happen even with House and Senate majorities, and they’ve done everything they can to avoid actually saying what they are for, anyway. It’s the naked surrenderism that is truly astonishing. It’s not just that are they ready to give up if the GOP wins back some seats. Did they learn nothing from George Bush? He got what he wanted even when they took Congress. He’s still having key parts of it his way even after the opposition took the White House … on a ticket that called for doing anything but what Bush did. Now Biden, his boss and the Congressional leadership are looking for a politically viable way to lose a war Bush showed them how to win. While apparently, if that “End of the Road 2010″ statement represents their reality, in no particularly big rush to advance their agenda and not particularly hopeful about it. Help me out here. Why’d they even run in the first place?

POPSAfghanistan Metrics Revealed The metrics span just about every conceivable issue, including progress towards Pakistan's civilian government and judicial system becoming stable, to support for human rights, to public perceptions of security, to volume and value of narcotics. What does it mean? Republicans aren't happy -- Rogin has that story, too, including this classic quote from McCain: For example, the document lists as one Afghanistan metric "support from allies." "It's like that old joke ‘How's your wife?" McCain quipped. "Compared to what?" Spencer Ackerman lays out the metrics in detail, and notes that they do not compare favorably with the metrics Congress produced for Iraq in 2006. POPSSen. McCain, Don't Give Obamacare a Life Raft
The point here is that activist liberals like FDR and Obama mean business. They'll make fundamental change if you are foolish enough to work with them. All the while, they tell you they're implementing reform in the name of the very thing they're destroying: private enterprise. That's right. FDR couched his statist programs in capitalist terms, too. Just as Obama tells us he is expanding patient and doctor choice under an Obamacare package that would eventually eliminate such choices, FDR told America he was pushing through his statist agenda in order to save capitalism from itself. Since that time, dutiful liberal historians have perpetuated the myth that FDR's New Deal wasn't statist at its core, but capitalist, because statism was necessary to save capitalism. Go figure. Times change, but liberalism doesn't. But Obama and his Democratic super majorities in Congress have done the nation a great favor by showing their true colors and what they will do . . .

POPSTo The RNC: WAKE UP The Republicans have for years presented themselves as "conservatives" and the party of "family values." Why is it that "conservative" doesn't include calling for EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THESE SCAMMERS TO BE THROWN IN PRISON and WHY IS IT THAT I KEEP HEARING ABOUT SOME FLOOZY SCANDAL FROM THESE SO-CALLED "FAMILY VALUES" CHAMPIONS? The ONLY difference between the RNC and DNC is that the DNC tells me up front that the Democrats intend to gang-rape me at the outset. The Republicans claim to intend to protect me, but then after I lower my guard I am violated from behind without warning. This is unacceptable but if I am forced to choose between being warned first and being lied to I'll take the warning thank you very little. I made clear to THE RNC that if they want one thin dime from me they can call again when every Republican Senator and Representative masses together on the steps of the Capitol and states in one loud, clear voice for all in America and every TV Network

POPSOpposition Emerges to House's Jet Spree the legislation is taken up by the Senate in September, including Sens. John McCain (R., Ariz.,) Jack Reed (D., R.I.), Richard Burr (R., N.C.), Christopher Bond (R., Mo.) and John Thune (R., S.D.). The funding for new planes is "a classic example of Congress being out of touch with the realities of deficit spending," said Mr. Thune. The Obama administration had sought $220 million to buy four passenger jets, including two that are currently being leased by the Air Force, to replace a fleet of older planes. Before leaving town for the August break, House lawmakers doubled the aircraft order to eight, at a total cost of $550 million. A spokesman for Mr. Bond confirmed that he "opposed the funds for the jets." Mrs. McCaskill said she was lobbying members of the Senate Appropriations Committee to oppose funding for the planes. She said she has spoken to several senators on the panel who oppose the funding, including Mr. Bond.

POPSBillions in Aid Go to Areas That Backed Obama in '08
Investigators who track the stimulus are skeptical that political considerations could be at work. "Most of what they're doing at this point is just stamping the checks and sending them out," Hughes says. The stimulus package Obama signed in February includes about $499 billion in new spending, and to date, the Obama administration has allocated about $158 billion to specific projects and programs. Most of that money has gone directly to state governments, which then disperse the money to prevent school layoffs, repair roads and fund social services. That contrasts with the $17 billion that Washington distributes directly to local communities. Including the larger chunk of money given to state governments, the aid favors states that voted for Obama, which have received about 20% more per person Not all of the money favors places that supported Obama. About a third of the $17 billion, or $5.5 billion, in contracts that the federal government has signed for projects

POPS Getting Punked On Health Care Reform Legislation to be outlined next week in the Senate Finance Committee will likely include a new tax on workers with the costliest employer-provided health coverage, officials said Friday, but with implementation delayed until 2013 to minimize any political fallout. Officials familiar with internal deliberations said the leading option under consideration by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the committee chairman, would mean higher taxes for workers whose family coverage costs $15,000 a year or more in premiums paid by employer and employee combined. The provision could generate hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade to help pay the $1 trillion or more the Obama administration has estimated is necessary under its plan to extend health care to millions of Americans who lack it. Cuts in projected Medicare and Medicaid spending are expected to make up much of the rest.

POPS Obama in Bush Clothing By Charles Krauthammer Friday, May 22, 2009 "We were able to hold it off with George Bush. The idea that we might find ourselves fighting with the Obama administration over these powers is really stunning." If hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue, then the flip-flops on previously denounced anti-terror measures are the homage that Barack Obama pays to George Bush. Within 125 days, Obama has adopted with only minor modifications huge swaths of the entire, allegedly lawless Bush program. The latest flip-flop is the restoration of military tribunals. During the 2008 campaign, Obama denounced them repeatedly, calling them an "enormous failure." Obama suspended them upon his swearing-in. Now they're back. Of course, Obama will never admit in word what he's doing in deed.

POPSObama Orders Review Of New York City Air Force One Flyover
The flight by the VC-25, a modified Boeing Co. 747, and two F-16 fighter jets cost $328,835, Air Force spokeswoman Vicki Stein said. Three-Hour Mission That includes $300,658 for the larger plane, which flew a three-hour mission, and about $28,178 for the F-16 jets, which flew 1.8 hours each, Stein said in an e-mailed statement. Obama has directed Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina to review “how the decision was made to conduct the flight,” Gibbs said at the daily White House briefing. “Somewhere along the line, someone at the FAA should have had the foresight to realize that New Yorkers would see this stunt and think back to 9-11,” Schumer said. McCain, who ran against Obama in the 2008 presidential election, also said that the disruption and panic caused by the flight should have been foreseeable. He wrote that the apology and acceptance of responsibility from Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office, “rings hollow.”

POPSJohn McCain Using Support For Obama's Amnesty To Raise Re-Election Funds Houston will show love to testy senator By Thursday afternoon hundreds of Houston business leaders received e-mails urging them to join the effort — by bringing their checkbooks to a May 4 fundraiser here for Sen. John McCain. The pitch ought to work. The Houston business establishment, led by the Greater Houston Partnership, is firmly on record for comprehensive immigration reform. The Houston economy is heavily dependent on immigrant labor, legal and illegal. The e-mail was written by Arizona fast food restaurateur Jason LeVecke, owner of the Carl’s Jr. and Hardees chains and co-chair of McCain’s re-election finance committee. LeVecke is also one of Arizona’s leaders in promoting immigration reform of the sort McCain championed before pulling back during his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/casey/6369534.html

POPS My Tea Party Rant Huckabee saddled the Republicans with McCain, period. Romney would have been the candidate to have on the podium when it was obvious that the economy was in trouble. Now remember, with no Obama in the White House pursuing his Marxists policies, it is very unlikely that these Tea Parties would have ever occurred. So, I find it particularly outrageous that Huckabee was out in front, co-opting the Tea Parties to the benefit of his ‘Fair Tax’ issue, when he in large part, contributed to the eventual election of Obama by saddling us with the inept John McCain. Now, Huckabee has parleyed his campaign presence into some sort of Fox TV show and we can expect him to be putting his mug in front of any populist movement that he thinks he can use to further his cause - him. POPSPublic Financing of Elections Dead - McCain There is some poetic justice that the "architect" of such a miserable piece of legislation should find himself on the losing end of a race where his opponent thumbed his nose at the law. But the fact that the man who was the chief beneficiary of McCain's stupidity is a far left liberal who is seeking to alter America doesn't give any satisfaction. Every attempt by McCain to establish himself as some kind of leader in the Republican party since his defeat has failed. He is a pariah of a politician and most Republican senators want little to do with him. But he will remain popular with his friends (re-found friends now that he's just another senator) in the media as long as he keeps trashing conservatives and members of his own party. It's a role he seems very comfortable playing. I just hope he likes solitude.

POPS Critics Got Donations From A.I.G.
Mr. Schumer has accepted $112,000 in donations from AIG's employees and its political action committee, making him the second-largest recipient among active lawmakers since 1990. "Virtually all the contributions were made over five years ago, and nothing has been contributed since taxpayers needed to step in to save this company from itself," said Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Sen. Schumer. "He hasn't accepted donations since, and will not." Among Republicans, former President George W. Bush has received the most -- $200,000 -- from AIG and its employees, followed by 2008 Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, with $99,000. Through the 1990s and the early part of this decade, AIG's donations were evenly split between Republicans and Democrats. But starting during the 2004 election, AIG employees and its PAC started favoring Democrats. Since then, Democrats have received 60% of the $2.6 million in political donations from the company and its employees.

POPS"Hillary:The Movie" ~ Does It Violate McCain-Feingold Law?
Former Solicitor General Theodore Olson called his client's movie a "long discussion" that "informs and educates" interested people on Clinton's qualifications and record. "In fact, as the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press points out, the documentary is indistinguishable from other news media commentary," Olson said. Several justices quoted from the script, which is filled with criticism of the former first lady. It includes Dick Morris, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton who is now a Clinton critic, saying the one-time candidate is "the closest thing we have in America to a European socialist." Olson pointed out that Supreme Court justices have written 22 separate opinions in the last six years trying to interpret the McCain-Feingold law. Justice John Paul Stevens' response? Petraeus planning 2010 visit to Iowa “THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that General Petraeus is planning on delivering the commencement address at the University of Iowa in 2010.” So reports Michael Goldfarb, late of the McCain campaign, on the magazine’s blog. Petraeus going to Iowa, a state he doesn’t have previous ties to, is going to create a huge amount of buzz about his presidential ambitions because the Iowa Caucuses kick off the whole presidential nomination process. If he does, deliver the address—and Petraeus must know this—it will be seen as a sign that he is thinking about running in 2012.

POPSMcCain Ad Touts Stem Cell Research – But Which Kind? In August, McCain told Pastor Rick Warren in a nationally televised interview from Saddleback Church in California that human rights begin “at the moment of conception.” According to the McCain campaign Web site, the Republican nominee – who claims a 25-year pro-life voting record – opposes “the intentional creation of human embryos for research purposes.” However, while he was campaigning for the GOP nomination, McCain professed his belief in the promise of embryonic stem cell research. Stem cells obtained from adult humans have been widely acclaimed for their ability to promote human health and stave off dreaded illnesses. Stem cells obtained from human embryos, however, have not been successful in yielding results in scientific research thus far.

POPSJob Casualities Mount In Obama's War On Prosperity President Obama is facing growing questions about his tone and the effectiveness of his leadership after he spent Thursday night mocking his political rivals and accusing them of playing games with the economic stimulus. In an off-the-cuff moment during his speech to House Democrats at a retreat in Virginia, the president ribbed Republicans, including former rival John McCain, who call the recovery package a “spending bill.” “So then you get the argument, ‘well, this is not a stimulus bill, this is a spending bill.’ What do you think a stimulus is? That’s the whole point,” Obama said to laughter.

Kit Bond (R-Mo.), a senior appropriator, said that “several people” registered complaints to Obama that the GOP had not been consulted in the development of the bills now being marked up in the Finance and Appropriations committees. The committees “were run without Republican participation, the Appropriations bill had things in my subcommittee part that we never saw or had anything to say about. We have been shut out.”

POPSObama's Continuing Crisis The subject is how Obama draws power from "crisis." "That we are in the midst of a crisis is well understood," President Barack Obama told the nation on Inauguration Day. The president can say that again, and no doubt will. But the "crisis" itself is anything but well understood. What we know for certain is that on or around Sept. 18 -- oddly enough, as AIM's Cliff Kincaid has pointed out, during the polling high point of John McCain's pathetic presidential campaign -- Bush administration Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson convinced former President Bush to abandon all remaining free-market principles and come up with hundreds of billions of bailout dollars from Congress. This not only saved Paulson's "buddies on Wall Street," as CNN's Lou Dobbs put it (not to mention Chinese interests, as Kincaid notes), but also endowed George W. Bush with the unexpected legacy of kick-starting the socialization of the U.S. economy. We have been in "crisis" ever since.
