About me
I believe the world changes when ordinary people learn its stories.
Why I use Clipmarks
To shine light on important but under-reported stories, and to make quick grabs that I'll use for blogging later (which I don't want to lose!)
You might as well know, I do block commentors who are a) abusive, b) so persistently unfactual as to be intentionally or irresponsibly misleading, or c) harassing me by showing up on my clips or comments ad infinitum just to drop snide, unsubstantiated comments.
Please - there are some wonderful people on CM, and I want to hear from them. Please don't pick and pick and pick until CM becomes a chore.
You are encouraged to disagree with me, if you like, but I don't want to waste time dealing with harassment.

We already have rationed, socialized healthcare
masbury
by masbury  12-8-2009
It's rationed by ability to pay - not need - and socialized by overcharging insured patients enough to cover costs for the un-insured. "We are ... the only advanced democracy on Earth -- the only wealthy nation -- that allows (health care) hardship for millions of its people."

Wendell Potter: The Insurance Industry's Lethal Bottom Line
masbury
by masbury  12-6-2009    1
When publicly held insurance companies spend most of their premium income on medical claims, their value on Wall Street plummets. Amendments have been introduced to require them to raise the percentage of our premium payments that actually goes into health care instead of executive salaries and lobbying Congress.

How farm subsidies aggravate world hunger
masbury
by masbury  11-25-2009    3
Subsidized grain gets sold or given away to poor countries, driving local farmers there out of business. Then, when food prices rise worldwide, poor people cannot afford imported food and no farms are left to grow it locally.

Save $110 Billion or Spend $6.3 Trillion?
masbury
by masbury  11-16-2009    2
Many say we can't afford the House's health care bill, which the CBO says will result in a net budget effect over 10 years of MINUS $110 Billion - a terrific return on our money. Yet we swallow the Pentagon's budget with scarcely a murmer, blithely spending $6.3 TRILLION over the same time, and ponder sending more troops abroad. It's absurd!
