POPSProbiotic health claims dismissed He said: "It's been an issue for some time that general health claims are made about these products using the family name for the active ingredient and not saying which member of the family is in the pot. "We expect the claims that will come now from the companies will be much more specific." A Yakult spokesman said: "Yakult has submitted claims for Lactobacillus casei Shirota, a well characterised probiotic strain unique to Yakult. "Evidence for its health benefit is based on over 70 human studies and over 70 years of research. "Opinions on claims submitted for this strain are not expected until 2010."

POPSCall to ban child-in-car smoking
And a spokeswoman for the road safety charity, Brake, said smoking while driving meant people were not concentrating on the road. "All that can add up to not having proper control of your vehicle or dangerous driving." She said it might be useful to have a law banning smoking in the same way there was in force regarding using hand-held mobile phones. But Neil Rafferty, Scottish spokesman for Forest, the pro-smokers' rights group, said: "We don't think that children should be exposed to smoke in a car but a ban would be a waste of police and court time. "Would it be OK if you opened the sunroof or a window while smoking? It's an impractical suggestion. "People like those at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health should be more realistic about what is possible." A Department of Health spokesman said it would look at whether current anti-smoking laws needed to be extended. He added: "We would always strongly recommend that people do not smoke in cars

POPSRecession Is Bad for Health AAFP President Ted Epperly, MD, tells WebMD that angst has become pervasive “and so many people are trying to save,” which can be dangerous. “We’ve seen bad outcomes. I have personal knowledge of a 45-year-old male with underlying heart disease that he knew about was also diabetic. Because he lost his health insurance when he lost his job, he stopped taking his diabetes medicine, it got out of control, he had a and he died. “We know of another gentleman with bipolar disease who stopped taking his antipsychotic to save money. He became manic, lost his job, his house, and then his family.”

POPSCosts Are High From Undiagnosed Diabetes The researchers used the data to estimate total national ambulatory visits, emergency room visits, and hospital inpatient days, among other things. Medical costs associated with undiagnosed diabetes include $2.3 billion for cardiovascular disease, $720 million for hypertension, $443 million for kidney problems, and $293 million for neurological symptoms. "To the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the health care use patterns and economic costs for patients with , although present research does show an increase in medical costs in the years leading up to diagnosis," the authors write.

POPSU.S. Declares Public Health Emergency So far, U.S. cases of swine flu have been milder than those seen in Mexico, where the World Health Organization has confirmed that at least 20 people have died from swine flu; health officials are investigating dozens more deaths in Mexico. CDC officials yesterday said they expected more swine flu cases to be reported as public health officials heighten their hunt for the new strain of swine flu virus, which is a mix of swine, human, and bird flu viruses. Countries around the world are watching for the virus, and scientists are scrambling to learn more about the virus and stop it before it becomes a pandemic. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza type A virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population, begins to cause serious illness, and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide, according to background information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

POPSFood of the week-- Onion
"Tips for Preparing Onions: While many people love to eat onions, most dread cutting them since this process usually brings a tear or two to the eyes. The compound that causes the eyes to burn is a phytonutrient known as allyl sulfate that is produced when sulfur-compounds released by the onion's ruptured cells are exposed to air. If cutting onions irritates your eyes, there are a few tricks that you can employ. Chill the onions for an hour or so before cutting. This will slow the activity of the enzyme that produces the allyl sulfate and is a better choice than the traditional method of cutting onion under running water. This latter process may dilute the amount of allyl sulfate, which, while it may be irritating to the eyes, is actually one of the phytonutrients most responsible for onions significant health benefits. Use a very sharp knife and always cut the onions while standing; that way your eyes will be as far away as possible. If cutting onions really makes you cry, co

POPSMental Health: Happy & Sad states This has been enlightening. Before being disabled I was a mental health social worker. Ya think I contributed to the fact that my state is in the happy list? It would be really great if I was able to help people -- anyway it would make me feel good.

POPSKids overlooked in super-flu preparations Now I think I see the logic (twisted as it is) The poor children have no health care, so they die after spreading it to their poor parents -- we take the money saved on health care and welfare -- and spend it on a war with Turkey.

POPSRep. Davis pushes for univeral health care Taking a swipe at the Republican Party's emphasis on moral politics, Davis said, "The strongest moral value is how you treat your old people, how you treat your children and how you treat your sick people."

POPSQuit complaining -- its bad for your health I can see both sides of this issue. Keeping things bottled up can cause physical health issues. Talking problems to death can cause mental health issues. hmmmmm It a appears that a healthy medium is called for.

POPSPakistan destroys expired flu vaccine I can understand the health officials point of view, but what a waste. In the past I have taken expired meds. (no that's not why I am a tad bit eccentric -- I already was that way) lol
