POPSexeLibrary - For when you want to know what that running file really is So, something is slowing down your computer. You bring up the Task Manager and see that lsass.exe is taking up all your CPU time. What the heck is lsass.exe? It sounds scary, probably a virus or something right? POPSIBM Is Working on DNA-Based processors This new goal is an addition to the research on the "DNA origami," conducted by Paul Rothemund of California Institute of Technology. Currently, more and more researchers are turning to DNA in search of an older goal, the "self-assembly". The advantages of building semiconductors based on DNA and nanotubes are especially concerning the chips' size, given the fact that DNA can work at a 2-nanometer scale. Imagine a chip built at two-nanometer node, then compare it to a state-of-the-art processor built with the 45-nanometer production node.

POPSClipmarks bug? Clipping tool failing to activate Sometimes when there is high CPU load on my computer and I click the clipping tool button, I can't clip anything. The bar at the top of the browser appears normally, but even after waiting a while, the orange lines never appear. Sometimes if I click "cancel" and reload the page and try again, the problem goes away; sometimes it doesn't. I'm running FF 2.0.0.6 on XP with a lot of extensions installed. Maybe this is an argument for offering an alternative way of clipping pages (e.g. a javascript bookmarklet)?

POPSTips for Upgrading Your PC - Economically I just purchased (at a completely awesome price) a Vista ready system (microATX). Maybe now I can enter Second Life. ;) (But SL wasn't the only reason I upgraded). I could not pass up the post holiday deals!

POPSSub $300 Desktop Computer A gig of memory, a dvd burner, and 80 gig hard drive for less than 300 dollars. My hot-shot 2 year old laptop has those specs and I know my company was charged something like $1500 for it. Globaization makes things cheaper if we actually let it work.

POPSThe Nehalem Preview: Intel Does It Again ]... for a 20 - 50% increase in performance, total system power consumption only went up by 10%. ... Final Words: First keep in mind that these performance numbers are early, and they were run on a partly crippled, very early platform. With that preface, the fact that Nehalem is still able to post these 20 - 50% performance gains says only one thing about Intel's tick-tock cadence: they did it. We've been told to expect a 20 - 30% overall advantage over Penryn and it looks like Intel is on track to delivering just that in Q4. At 2.66GHz, Nehalem is already faster than the fastest 3.2GHz Penryns on the market today. At 3.2GHz, I'd feel comfortable calling it baby Skulltrail in all but the most heavily threaded benchmarks. This thing is fast and this is on a very early platform, keep in mind that Nehalem doesn't launch until Q4 of this year.
