POPSHeart Attack Prevention Tips for Women February is American Heart Month, so let's talk about preventing heart disease in women. But pay attention even if you are a man because most of these recommendations apply to everyone. women are more likely to die after a heart attack than men. One reason for this higher death rate is that women tend to be older than men when they have their first heart attack. # Increase omega-3 fatty acids. You can get these healthy fats by eating oily fish such as salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, sardines, herring, and lake trout. Women with known heart disease may also wish to take omega-3 supplements. # Supplement with care. Be aware that supplements such as folate, vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene do not prevent heart disease and so should not be taken for that purpose. # If you smoke, quit! Look for such options as nicotine-replacement medications and smoking-cessation counseling.

POPSCalcium: Heart Risk for Older Women? The risk of a heart attack was about 1.5 times greater for those in the supplement group, but the link did not reach statistical significance. Considered together, strokes, heart attack, or sudden death were more common in those on supplements than on placebo, but the differences -- when taken as a whole -- were statistically only of borderline significance But he speculates that the calcium supplements may elevate blood calcium levels and possibly speed calcification in blood vessels, which is known to predict the rates of vascular problems such as heart attack. Proceed with caution....

POPSPromote Lung Health with Bell Peppers "There are a lot of people who live to be 90 years old and are smokers," he said. "Why? Probably because of their diet…The implications are that those who start smoking at an early age are more likely to become vitamin A deficient and develop complications associated with cancer and emphysema. And if they have a poor diet, forget it." If you or someone you love smokes, or if your work necessitates exposure to second hand smoke, protect yourself by making sure that at least one of the World's Healthiest Foods that are rich in vitamin A, such as bell peppers, is a daily part of your healthy way of eating.

POPSSave the Environment, eat a PB&J sandwich Dude! A PB&J will save land. Have a PB&J and save 12 to 50 square feet of land from deforestation, over-grazing, and pesticide and fertilizer pollution. How to Help an Animal at Lunch Saving water, fighting global warming, and preserving habitat are all great reasons to have a PB&J for lunch, but, if you like animals, there's the added benefit of not killing them. It takes about 16 PB&J sandwiches to save a chicken's life, for example.

POPSThe Environmental Impact of LUNCH!!!
Butter Me UP! The PB&J Campaign gives four main reasons why choosing a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich over other types of lunch food can have a positive impact on the environment. These reasons are all based on how much of the earth’s resources are needed to produce a meal that contains no animal protein, such as a PB&J sandwich, versus a meal that contains animal protein, such as meat, eggs, or cheese. By chowing down on a PB&J more often, an individual can make a difference in four areas, according to the campaign: global warming, water conservation, land conservation, and animal welfare. Because of the greater resources needed to raise livestock, the group argues that by eating a PB&J sandwich rather than a hamburger for lunch, a diner could save almost 3.5 pounds (1.6kg) of carbon dioxide emissions, and about 280 gallons of water. That meatless lunch could also preserve 12 to 50 square feet (about 4 to 15 square meters) of land from deforestation or other harmful practices.
