    A Fallen American Soldier
    cptenaud
    by cptenaud  10-19-2008    8
continued; his father, Feroze Khan, told the Gannett News Service in a story printed shortly after his death. "He looked at it that he's American and he has a job to do." Powell framed the entire "Obama is a Muslim" debate in striking terms with his reference to this fallen American soldier. "Is there something wrong with being Muslim in America? No, that's not America," he said. "He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life," Mr. Powell said. "Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way." The highly charged rhetoric used by McCain and Palin to tie Obama to terrorism and Islam is once again an affront to all Muslim Americans. We saw this type of fear and backlash just after 9/11. We see it also in the McCarthy-like invocations of Michele Bachmann. I challenge Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin to tell this grieving mother that her son is anti-American because of his faith.

Who Are The Real Pirates In Africa's Waters?
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  9-23-2009    4
Like the pirates of the ``golden age’’, today's Somali pirates see themselves as fighting for justice. As Sugale Ali told the October 1, 2008, NYT: ``We don’t consider ourselves sea bandits. We consider sea bandits those who illegally fish in our seas and dump waste in our seas and carry weapons in our seas. We are simply patrolling our seas. Think of us like a coast guard.’’ ``The truth is, if you ask any Somali, if getting rid of the pirates only means the continuous rape of our coast by unmonitored Western vessels, and the production of a new cancerous generation, we would all fly our pirate flags high. It is time that the world gave the Somali people some assurance that these Western illegal activities will end, if our pirates are to their operations. We do not want the EU and NATO serving as a shield for these nuclear waste-dumping hoodlums.’’

From a fascinating interview w/ author Chris Hedges (son of a Presbyterian minister and a Harvard Divinity School grad) about his new book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. This guy has a sense of perspective most of us don't, based on his experience as a war correspondent for the NYT. Not a religion-basher, but a realist who's incensed both with the manipulation of entire classes of people and the cluelessness of the left when it comes to awareness of the real issues we're grappling with as a society.

Open debate is stifled, and anyone daring to dissent or demur is pilloried, ridiculed, called anti-Semetic, even threatened, ostracised, and finally ignored. In his seminal work on Middle East affairs, "Fateful Triangle," Noam Chomsky put it this way: "....Israel has been granted a unique immunity from criticism in mainstream journalism and scholarship...."' Simply put, the NYT is a rag unworthy of the tees needed Today, it's the pillar of the corporate media and main instrument of fake news making it the closest thing in the country to an official ministry of information and propaganda. No media source anywhere has more clout than the Times, none manipulates the public mind more effectively, and where it goes, others follow. It's most visible supporting all things corporate, foreign wars of aggression, and everything favouring Israel it views one

NYT: "Iraq Museum Reopens Six Years After Looting"
    ratcatcher2
    by ratcatcher2  3-30-2009    4
Inside, in stark contrast, visitors filled 8 of the museum’s 26 galleries, engaged in hushed conversations before glass cases displaying ancient pottery and sculptures, cuneiform tablets from Sumerian and Babylonian times, and the stunning 2,700-year-old stone reliefs from the palace of the Assyrian king Sargon II at Khorsabad. (In size and shape, the stonework eerily recalls the blast walls that protect buildings and divide streets in today’s Baghdad.) Welcoming the diplomats as a bagpipe ensemble played in the garden outside, Iraq’s minister of state for tourism and antiquities, Qahtan al-Jibouri, said Iraq wanted visitors “to see that Baghdad is still the same as it was in their eyes and has not turned to ruins, as the enemies of life wanted.” ... Is Obama’s “Czar System” Grounds For Impeachment?
    merrie

Was this what the Framers intended when they created the three branches of our government with all the checks and balances? I am no lawyer, and obviously not a Constitutional one, but it strikes me there is a problem here. And it could be very embarrassing to Mr. Obama. No doubt this is why, as Byron York points out, the mainstream media has been so reluctant to cover this story, only the WaPo and CBS chiming in at this point, although they were late to the party and relatively perfunctory. Had Bush appointed thirty-one czars outside the normal Congressional approval system the MSM would have been all over it like the proverbial wet suit, declaring a coup d’etat in the making. But, as of now, the MSM has imposed omerta. It is Labor Day weekend. We shall see what happens next week. UPDATE: Now that Van Jones has stepped, not surprisingly the NYT has commented " but without any acknowledgment that they had ignored the story. But what is interesting is that . . . .

“No politician can afford to identify with the West because poll after poll shows people don’t believe in the U.S. agenda,” said Mustafa Hamarneh, until recently the director of the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan. Mr. Hamarneh is running for a seat in Jordan’s Parliament in November, but he says he has made a point of keeping his campaign focused locally, and on bread-and-butter issues. “If somebody goes after you as pro-American he can hurt you,” he said. “The Americans think that supporting democracy should create positive reactions,” said Nicola Nassif, a columnist with the left-leaning Lebanese daily Al Akhbar. “No one can be against democracy, sovereignty, independence and freedom. But not if it upsets the internal power balance, not if it empowers one party against the other, especially in a country where supporting one group can lead to violence and even civil wars.” “Last Sunday we saw that even if you are a former president running for a seat in

Often the US charities will specify that their gifts are going to charities in Israel, even though the recipients are in the West Bank, which the US regards as occupied territory. American Friends of the College of Judea and Samaria said its donations were "to provide for the expansion and furtherance of the needs of educational institutions in Israel," even though the college is in the settlement of Ariel. A 2005 report by the Congressional Research Service stated: "The US stipulates that US aid funds cannot be used in the occupied territories." The issue came to a head during a 1992 dispute over the uses of US loan guarantees. A January 25, 1992, story in NYT said that Secretary of State Baker had cautioned Israel's ambassador "that the administration was not going to underwrite Israeli policies that fundamentally contradict its own principles and long-stated policies." ... fta
