POPSObamacare Means $1,700 More in Insurance Premiums for a Typical Family
And, with a government subsidy, you gain nothing by paying for all those years when you don't need insurance. So Obama's program turns out not to be one to spread insurance and thus spread the risk of costly illness, but one to make people pay 7.5 percent of their incomes once they get sick, with the government picking up their remaining premium and the health insurance customers paying for the medical expenses. Some deal! So tote up the cost of this bill on the middle class: -- $1,700 more in insurance premiums for the average family. -- Medical devices like wheelchairs and hearing aids get taxed. -- Those who are sick must pay an average of about $600 more a year in income taxes because the bill raises the threshold for deducting medical expenses from 7.5 percent of income to 10 percent. -- A $404 billion cut in Medicare. -- Ending the subsidized Medicare Advantage insurance for costs over and above Medicare. Without Medicare Advantage, the elderly can only .

POPSIraq And Your wallet An excellent editorial by Nicholas.D. Kristof in the N.Y.Times.Mr.Kristof points out that the tremendous amount of money that is being spent on the war in Iraq could be much better spent on health care, fighting AiDS,improving our schools, and other such worthwhile programs.

POPSThis Just In: iPod Still Has No Built-In Mic Apple's iPod still lacks one feature that virtually every other MP3 player on the market already has: a built-in mic. Having to shell out an extra $50 to $70 for an iPod attachment that can record would seem to be something to poke fun at, not celebrate. - Louis Hau

POPSDay Care's New Frontier: Bring Baby to Work For it or against? It is a compelling argument on both sides, however the cost of daycare for infants is huge, in MA it was at $300/wk. and up. Perhaps with more women in leadership roles, this situation can be a priority.

POPSJerry Lewis' Telethon hits a new record. Jerry Lewis is a comedian that has, and deserves more credibility than any politician I can think of (Live politician) When he makes people laugh, rather than focus on a human weakness in someone else, he adopts it, and presents it from a different angle (How exactly, can depend on the straight guy) He manages to let people laugh at him, and so feel confidence about the problems they once thought were more critical. The logic following that since people realize some of the problems they worry about are trivial, they can distinguish between them and problems that cannot be cured with a laugh, such as Muscular Dystrophy, which require funding and research. They become more prepared to help those who are undoubtedly worse off.

POPSFolding Reusable Cloth Grocery Bags from Hannafords I have dozens of these totes. I absolutely love them. The design sets them apart from all the rest of these types of bags. They are shaped like a paper bag having a flat bottom. They fold up so easy and small and you can use the handle to place on your front door to bring out to the car. You would have to see it all folded up to understand what I mean. When it's all folded up, there is a snap closure. (You can just make it out on the bottom of the bag in the picture.) If you have a Hannaford supermarket in your area, you have to get some of these. I even give them out to friends and family.

POPSCounter-terror cops tote machine guns in the subways in new crackdown
Is this really the world you want to live in? I don't by the crap that this is the world we have been given by the "terrorists" this is a world we have allowed those in power to foist upon us; one more example of perpetual infatileism or if you prefer perpetual child hood in which the state takes all of your freedoms in exchange for the perception of safety. We have become weak and pathetic, people gladly laying down their freedoms because of a perceived evil. Here's a bit of news for you...there has always been risk and danger in the natural world, that is what has insured the survival of our species, the ability to confront danger individually and survive, or die trying. Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. --Franklin We are a weak and apathetic people, chasing the illusions of wealth and comfort and willingly giving up our unalienable rights...we WILL live to regret our apathy
