Why kindness has become our forbidden pleasure?
    einbar
    by einbar  1-10-2009    8
"What is to be done? Nothing, many would say. Human beings are innately selfish and that is that. Newspapers bombard us with scientific evidence to back up this pessimism. We read about greedy chimpanzees, selfish genes, ruthless mate-selection strategies, even about meerkats - those famously cooperative creatures - who instead of looking out for their fellows spend most of their time "watching their own backs". Richard Dawkins of "selfish gene" fame lays it on the line: "Human society based simply on the gene's law of universal ruthless selfishness would be a very nasty society in which to live. But unfortunately, however much we deplore something, this does not stop it being true ..." Yet Dawkins does not despair: "If you wish, as I do, to build a society in which individuals cooperate generously and unselfishly towards a common good, you can expect little help from biological nature. Let us try to teach generosity "

"True, much of what is written online is quotidian, informational, ephemeral. But writing has always been so: traditional newspapers line bird-cages a day later; lab reports describe methodology in tedious detail; the founding fathers wrote what they ate for lunch. And the quality of many blogs is high, indistinguishable in eloquence and intellect from many traditionally published works." an important read

U.S. Ranked 36th Freest Press in the World

Who Controls the U.S. Media? For the most part, the media spreads a lot of misinformation and corporate propaganda. This is not at all surprising considering that Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, Viacom (formerly CBS) and General Electric's NBC are the top owners of the entire media industry, which includes everything you read and hear in newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. In the last 15 years alone, your sources for news have shrunk drastically. Whereas in 1983, 50 corporations ruled the U.S. news media, by 2004 this number decreased to a minuscule six corporations! As you might imagine, with just six corporations deciding what’s worthy of news and what’s not, you end up with sensationalized tragedies, celebrity features, and anything else that will capture people’s attention. There is virtually no competition in the media market today whatsoever, and this s

I clipped this before, but pop restrictions burried the clip. In a very naive hope to keep discussions fallacy-free, better the debate and stimulate some self-criticism, I'm re-sharing this with you all. Anyway, the resource is huge, examples abundant, explications very clear and even etymological grounded.

Information age leaves our heads full of facts but empty of ideas
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  9-19-2008    6
INFORMATION Overload – what it is and how to get rid of it: • The high volume of information coming from sources such as the internet, 24-hour television and blogs has led to complaints of "information overload". While this sounds like a new phenomenon, the term was first used in 1970 by Alvin Toffler, an author, who warned that the human brain did not have the capacity to take in, interpret and store increasingly large volumes of information. • More recently, a psychiatrist at King's College London found that information overload can harm concentration just as much as marijuana, with men twice as likely to be distracted as women. • Research found information overload can reduce a person's ability to focus just as much as losing a night's sleep. • Psychologists who study visual processing and decision-making have shown the brain can cope with only about five messages at any one time.

    Irony on decline ?
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  12-9-2008
An interesting read. I believe that irony is a fair measure of an healthy and active intelligence. A steady decline in irony may carry consequences as serious as global warming. It might mean we become rigid thinkers imprisoned within our own conceptions and less inclined towards this highly intelligent mix of critical thinking and humor.

I am by training a historian. My focus of study has been 20th century Europe and the rise of fascism. The "othering' taking place on the right and from the Republican candidates themselves is horrifying to behold. Who's to blame for the economic crisis? Barney Frank (faggot!), ACORN (niggers!), Barack Hussein Obama (half-breed Muslim!). I see it on the internet, I see it on TV, I see it in newspapers, I see it here on ClipMarks: race-baiting, fear-mongering, scapegoating. Enough! Not here! Not now! Not ever again! If I may quote Obama, "Not this time!

Why Google bought reCAPTCHA (you'll never guess this)
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  9-18-2009    4
I had no idea that the collective entries people made were self - validating and educating computers on what the letters were...that makes reCAPTCHA about 100x more innovative than i ever realized it to be. For anyone who doesn't know, ReCAPTCHA is the thing you have probably seen many times when you sign up for a new service - when you're asked to enter the scribbled letters in a box.

NPR is kicking ass because they "get it"
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  6-5-2009    4
I clipped this from a really compreshensive post on mashable.com that discusses how NPR has been defying the rest of the traditional media industry by steadily growing its audience. After reading it, it seems to me that the key here is that they have a CEO who is embracing the changing media landscape instead resisting/ignoring/denying its impact. It seems like such an obvious approach, but one that so many media companies seem unable or unwilling to take.

Still a Democracy. 'How about you?'
    righthand
    by righthand  11-22-2007    5
The voters will decide, with a far stronger opposition media than exists in the USA proselytising against the government. Venezuelans have not lost civil liberties the way people in the US or the UK have in recent years, and ordinary citizens continue to have more say in their government, and share more in its oil wealth, than ever before. It is doubtful that the referendum will reverse these changes, regardless of the outcome. He does seem to be trying to give the poor some healthcare and some hope. 'How about you?'
