    Generosity May Be Genetically Programmed
    Fast T friend
    by Fast T friend  12-7-2007
"The experiment provided the first evidence, to my knowledge, for a relationship between DNA variability and real human altruism," said Knafo, who conducted the research along with other researchers, including Prof. R. P. Ebstein, Prof. Gary Bornstein, and Salomon Israel of the Psychology Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The findings could help biologists sort out altruism's evolutionary history, according to the scientists. They noted that a version of AVPR1a also exists in rodents called voles, where it also promotes social bonding. This suggests that altruism has a long rooted genetic history, which may have taken on a new role during human evolution.

General Wesley Clark Joins Democrat anti-Semitic Wing
    zasel
    by zasel  1-27-2007    1
I clipped this article as an appalling example of the kind of extremist rhetoric that is being perpetuated by some right-wing political groups. Calling Carter an anti-Semite because of the title of his new book, and do not be fooled, the vitriol is based mostly on the use of the word "Apartheid" in the title, is totally dishonorable and disgusting. Now, trying to tag Wesley Clark as being anti-Semitic, and using his friendship with President Carter as a prime example of his anti-Semitism in a new low in all of this crap. As the editor of an online magazine promoting Jewish culture and lifestyle on the Web, I have no use for people who use criticism of Israel as a determining factor of a person's overall feelings about Jews. It is due to the efforts of AIPAC and other right-wing organizations that American Jews especially are being led to believe that only someone who is anti-Semitic would ever criticize Israel. I for one criticize Israel at times, and I am no anti-Semite.

Shortened URLs are convenient – and trackable
    Lexica
    by Lexica  5-4-2009
More: For all the convenience of short URLs, some Internet security experts worry that they could be used to camouflage spam and phishing attacks and redirect people to malicious Web sites. “People have no way to know where they’re going,” said Patrik Runald, chief security advisor at F-Secure Security Labs, a maker of security software. “These services are great and they serve a purpose, but at the same time, there is a darker side.” And if a shortening site shuts down, any links funneled through it would be lost forever, Mr. Runald said.

    Atheists combat religion on buses
    AiNeko III
    by AiNeko III  11-1-2008    1
"Religion is accustomed to getting a free ride - automatic tax breaks, unearned 'respect' and the right not to be 'offended', the right to brainwash children," Professor Dawkins said. "Even on the buses, nobody thinks twice when they see a religious slogan plastered across the side. This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think - and thinking is anathema to religion." His outspoken comments are backed by BHA chief executive Hanne Stinson, who said the advert would be welcomed as a "breath of fresh air" by many. "If it raises a smile as well as making people think, so much the better."

    The Graying of Abortionists

    by Efrain Alvarado  6-16-2009
"Of course Salon.com says this is because of anti-abortion "terrorism" like the murder of Dr. Tiller last week. But I'm pretty sure this drop off didn't start last Sunday. And what this actually shows is that societal pressures are working. So that's the good news. The bad news is that abortion is a multi-million dollar industry and as long as they're paying, some shell of a human with an online medical degree will step up and agree to rip babies limb from limb for money. And when these hacks hurt women with botched abortions Salon.com, I'm sure, will blame you. That's right. You for stigmatizing abortion and making it so difficult to fill those spots. "

They say it is due to an increasingly professional digital criminal underground. Doesn't that just mean they're making increasing amounts of money? Looks like Vista is as infectious as Windows has ever been. I suppose it pays to become more well versed on the capability, and mechanisms of computer viruses, and watch out for them in addition to relying on antivirus programs. If my programs have found a virus trojan etc, I can't delete it until I've found out what I can about it. I don't remember having any real trouble since I started using firefox, but I'd be surprised if any could compete with some of the operator errors I've had to fix. It can be hard to fix something when the answer can be found on line, and the computer won't boot.

Wall Street celebrates bonuses, schools beg for supplies
    disenchantedcitizen
    by disenchantedcitizen  10-20-2009    2
We see stories like “Recession Pinches Back-to-School Budgets” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/03/eveningnews/main5361456.shtml and “School budgets dip, class sizes grow” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32156424/ns/us_news-education/ along with reports of Wall Street reaping fat bonuses after being bailed out with taxpayer dollars. Sure, the bailouts were necessary to keep the economy afloat. Or so we are led to believe. And while the wisdom of a Wall Street bailout is being debated there is no debate about whether or not our schools need more money. Should public schools needs be ranked second to Wall Street because schools don’t turn a profit? Actually, if your head is on straight, you can clearly see how schools do turn a profit, but you need to value education above making money in order to see it. If you do, here’s an online charity that connects you to classrooms in need: http://www.donorschoose.org/

A big hesitancy i've always had about raising venture capital money is that i would lose control of decision making for Amplify and Clipmarks - in regards to things related to user experience as well as if/when to raise money and/or sell the company. That said, additional resources sure would help. At this point i think we've raised about $136M less than Ning :)

In the First Great Depression, the use of local community currencies ("script") exploded across the United States. Roosevelt sent a senior member of his Cabinet (I think it was John Foster Dulles, the Secretary of the Interior) to tour the country to find out what was going on. After a few months research, the Secetrary returned to report that the local "script" currencies were thriving and were starting to turn things around. But then he told the President that if the Federal Government lost control of the money system, it would lose control of the country. Local currencies were then outlawed and the New Deal, according to which the Federal Government borrowed and dispersed all monies, was hatched. Obama is trying the same trick in his new New Deal. If it does not succeed -- and our findings indicated that success is unlikely -- then he might be open to letting people create and trade in their own local bartar currencies, as well as give each other interest-free credits. Cracking Open The Cybercrime Economy
    merrie
    by merrie  12-20-2007    2
"Over the years, the criminal elements, the ones who are making money, making millions out of all this online crime, are just getting stronger and stronger. I don't think we are really winning this war." While law enforcement co-operation with government and the IT community is paramount in addressing the problem in the short term, longer-term solutions must be found. One way to address the issue of the growth of the "black cybereconomy" in the long term is to harness the IT talent in developing countries that otherwise might be co-opted into illegal activity, say security experts. "We have to make it more attractive to be in the white economy than in the black--when that happens we will turn a corner. We're starting to see that happen as companies look to less expensive economies as places to put people. In Eastern Europe and Asia there are highly skilled people where there are less opportunities--this is where the black economy is fueled now," said McAfee's Telafici.

It costs a lot to run a mint, and print currency. Virtual banking, is like virtual retail, The net removes the need for a shop front, staff, and materials costs. The 'liquidity' of internet cash, means that real currency will be needed in reduced amounts, no doubt with aims of eliminating it's need entirely. The more online transactions there are the easier it will be to see where the mioney is with an instant status report.

This graphic shows the Internet Service providers with the greatest numbers of victims affected by this virus. Taken together, these 14 ISPs accounted for about 80 percent of the victims . Scammers collect information about the location of their victims because it becomes useful when they want to conduct fraud with a hijacked credit or debit card account. The idea here is to evade a key component of fraud detection in the financial industry. If Joe in Georgia starts suddenly withdrawing money or making purchases in Nigeria or Europe when his last transaction was an hour earlier in Atlanta, Joe's bank is going to flag the transactions as fraudulent and in all likelihood cancel the card.

Legal action taken agaisnt these sites are very difficult to prove, the majority of these websites are located in another country which means they don't fall under the same laws that we have in this country.

What a pity. Obama is not for decriminalizing possession of marijuana. But I'm not surprised. With having already to contend with being called a socialist literally every day, rolling back the marijuana laws would be portrayed as very radical. Still, criminalizing marijuana possession, incarcerating people for it, is insanity and it's unjust. I couldn't live with myself if I were in his position and not speak out against them.
