It's Official: eBay buys Stumbleupon for $75 million

    by adamc  5-31-2007    5
First it was rumored at $40-45 million , then almost inked and now it's official. Will be fascinating to watch how they integrate it -- the Skype-Stumbleupon combo could be a compelling experience.

Clipmarks now available for Firefox 3
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  6-18-2008    14
Just wanted to make sure everyone knows that we released a new version of clipmarks (version 3.5) that supports the just-released Firefox3. We made some real nice improvements to the orange lines so they should more accurately outline elements on the page to clip. If you don't have the latest version of clipmarks installed, you can get it here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1407. There's a review section on that page, so if you have anything nice to say, don't hesitate :) FYI...we're getting loads of new clippers today, so if you get a chance, check out the newest clips section and welcome some new users with some pops and comments.

Detoxify your body - shopping guide for grocery items that help your body!
    enchantedgarden
    by enchantedgarden  1-15-2007
This blogger put together some interesting grocery items that indeed are very healthy and help to detoxify your system. I would add celery to this list - it too is excellent in aiding the body and stimulating the system to shed toxins. Parsley and dandelion could also be added!

Programmers say the craziest things in their code
    Kore7
    by Kore7  10-14-2006    2
With the new Google Code Search tool suddenly exposing millions of lines of previously obscure code to the public, I decided to try to find the most embarrassing comments possible that are now out in the open for all to see. Even knowing what types of comments developers leave in their code, I was still a bit mortified to find out just what shameful secrets Google has exposed overnight. (And you should see the R-rated examples.) One blogger compared Google Code Search to reading the great "bathroom wall" of programming. Feel dirty? embryo-0.9.0/src/bin/embryo_main.c 3: /* This is ugly code! don't look at it please! i am embarrassed! i need to */ /* cleanit up! */

BBC: "Egypt women blog for their rights"
    ratcatcher2
    by ratcatcher2  3-20-2009
Obsession with virginity Another blogger who wanted to remain anonymous, writes about her past as a drug addict and has criticised what she calls Arab society's "continuing obsession with female virginity. "My blog is a way to remind myself that I am not alone, Even if no one reads it, I would still keep writing," she says. Another significant way in which the blogosphere is being used to change Egyptian society is that it is one of the few public spaces in Egypt where men and women are represented more-or-less equally. It makes collaboration on social issues possible between men and women. Subjects that are taboo on the street can be discussed online. They discuss issues such as sexual harassment, which is often pigeon-holed in Egypt as a "woman's problem".

Blogger: No good online discussion without moderation
    jklugman
    by jklugman  4-19-2007    6
Something to consider when we talk about civility and free speech on Clipmarks. I suspect Teresa is right when she says you need moderators for good online discussion. One other thing from her moderating guidelines : There’s no more useless advice than to tell people to just ignore such things. We can’t. We automatically read what falls under our eyes.

    Hatred towards Women Bloggers...
    NonStatQuo
    by NonStatQuo  3-28-2007    36
When I read this in the BBC, I thought it was just sensational journalism. I followed the link trails and went to web sites in question. Horrifying. Appalling. I remember visiting Ms Sierra's blog years ago when I started out in web design. This woman is a long time blogger advocating creativity and technology in a well written blog. I would read her stuff, zeldmans stuff among others. Why she should be threatened in an extremely frightening manner is beyond me. http://headrush.typepad.com/ While anonymity gives some freedom of expression and freedom of the constraints of identity for surfers and bloggers alike, it by no means should allow people to be able to make this extreme level of threat to another human being regardless of gender. Issues with free speech and terrorism do not necessarily mean Iraq and the war. Irrational hatred takes on so many insidious forms...

But the Chinese Don't Eat Fortune Cookies!!!!

The funny thing is that there are no fortune cookies in China. I just spent the whole day trying to explain them to a class full of Chinese college students, and they just could not understand what the point was. A number of them thought it sounded kind of dumb! I for one have always wanted cynical fortune cookies that say things like: "Confucius say: Vinnie will be waiting for you out front, take the back door!" "This is bad week for operate heavy machinery for you" "Now is good time to buy life insurance, while you still can." or simply: "Duck!"

    Dunkin Donuts Goes Completely Insane
    Elisabeth Eaves
    by Elisabeth Eaves  5-30-2008    3
There are certain times in history that make us look back and wonder, "how is it possible that civilized people behaved in such craven and irrational ways?" The Salem Witch trials, for instance. The present moment will likely be looked back on as another such time. Case in point: Dunkin Donuts just pulled an ad in which TV cook Rachael Ray wore a scarf that somewhat resembled a traditional Palestinian head dress -- because imbalanced bloggers accused the company of promoting terrorism. I'll skip speculating on the sheer pandering nuttiness of Dunkin's decision, to point out merely what a dumb business decision this was. It's a global company. There are 1.3 billion Muslims out there. The math is simple.

the Chinese use this all the time. i do too (even though i'm not chinese). i just think everyone should get used to this - it makes a whole lot of sense and is so useful, esp when you happen to be holding something in the other hand... just beware the no. ten. as the blogger points out, most people i know cross their index and middle finger to indicate 10 - using the second hand to make a cross IMO completely defeats the purpose.
