Canadian Supreme Court Hands Media a Victory
iulawboy
by iulawboy  12-22-2009
What is most interesting to me is the court's willingness to site international norms in its unanimous decision. Contract that with several members of the US Supreme Court who refuse to acknowledge that international norms, while not binding on the United States, can be sources of well reasoned opinion on subjects of concern to our legal system.

Airline's will not be able to hold planes on the tarmac for extended periods of time
iulawboy
by iulawboy  12-21-2009    1
This is long overdue. One big problem I see, apparentlythat the rule will only require a small snack to be offered (think peanuts). Not exactly what I think of when I read that the airline would have to feed folks who sit on the tarmac for hours.

The Senate health care bill includes expanding Medicare to those people harmed by exposure to asbestos from the vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana. I, for one, am glad to see the government finally moving to assist these people who have been so devastated by this problem.

I think this analysis is correct as to those we picked up in Afghanistan. As long as we stay engaged militarily in Afghanistan we can probably keep these folks wherever we like (POWs - even if we don't call them that). Once the war is over we would need to repatriate them. Of course the worst of the worst need to go on trial at the Hague - but we don't recognize the World Court.

On first blush I have to agree with the opinion, but then I remember that parties in lawsuits are able to get quite a bit of information via the discovery process. I wonder if it would have been possible to gather the requested information in a way that did not disclose protected information (names) but gave the litigants access to the content.

I do not want to even attempt to imagine what that would be like. I saw "The Bell and the Butterfly." Ultimatly, no thank you - if the only hope was that many years later I may be able to communicate blinking I don't want to stick around. What is wonderful is that this family chose to keep trying, assuming that is what the man wanted. Make sure you tell your loved ones what you would want to have happen in instances such as this(and draft documents!). They will have stress enough without having to guess what you want.
