Republican Candiates for Iowa Governor on Gay Marriage
iulawboy
by iulawboy  2-3-2010
How far out of touch can you be. One is saying he will veto every bill, including the budget, until the legislature delivers him an amendment to the state constitution banning gay marriage. Another suggests that the Governor can overrule the State Supreme Court with an executive order. Now there's respect for a co-equal branch of the government, init?

Gay Couples Not Monogamous
iulawboy
by iulawboy  1-29-2010
I'm shocked! Shocked! We actually are redefining marriage, and that's ok. We do not have to be locked into the institutions of the past/present. Slavery was once an acceptable institution and acting as if your wife was your property was once acceptable. We can and do change and our institutions change. Institutions were created for people, not the other way around.

Support for and against Prop.8
iulawboy
by iulawboy  1-21-2010
According to trial testimony 34% of the U.S. population belong to churches that supported Prop.8 and 2% to those opposes. Of course that 34% is inflated with Catholics, many of whom do not support their church's position on this issue.

Hetrosexuals suffer loss of identity with gay-marriage
iulawboy
by iulawboy  1-19-2010    6
This author has hit on something. A person's identity is important and if/as the meaning of marriage changes, it is less clear what you mean when you say you are married. I can understand this loss. I have long argued that if it is the word marriage that we are fighting over then we should use a different legal term and take the victory and move on. But as words do have meaning the more I am confronted with the opposition to gay people marring the more I believe that it is vitally important that they do gain the right to use that term in a legal sense.

Hemingway's six word novel

This is truly the perfect junction of writer and reader. This "novel" is not complete until you bring your own experience and perspective to it. I immediately colored in many details just from reading those six words.

British Conservative Party Endorses Tax Breaks for Gay Civil Partnerships
iulawboy
by iulawboy  1-14-2010
What's this with British civil partnership ceremonies not being permitted to take place at a religious venue? It's odd when I realize that the US concept of separation of church and state does not apply across all liberal democracies.

Good for the Swiss - for the wealthy a standard fine is no deterrant to speeding. The alternative, jail, is also a poor response as it costs society so much to incarcerate the nonviolent.

Why Full Marriage Equality Matters
iulawboy
by iulawboy  1-4-2010    1
In NJ the law is treating civil union/dissolution differently than marriage/divorce. If having the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness means anything, then it is time to treat these relationships equally.
