POPSBarack Obama is becoming a figure of fun If this is the Messiah, nobody is standing up for the Hallelujah Chorus any more. The most striking aspect of it was the tone of mockery, epitomised by Mason Weaver’s brilliant soundbite satirising Obama’s dependence on a teleprompter. The prevailing tone of anti-Obama public expression is becoming more relaxed, because his absurd projects are now recognised as a house of cards. Obama set himself the task of turning America into a socialist state: he should have started with a less ambitious project, such as pushing water uphill or transmuting base metals into gold. Barack Obama is in danger of becoming a figure of fun. His opponents are beginning to hate him less and laugh at him more. That is the most deadly fate that can overtake any politician. If there is one phenomenon that should strike blind terror into White House spin doctors it is the sound of derisive laughter. No political career can survive that.

POPSDefining the World by their Prejudices Because, they believe, the shooter hated Jews, he had to be a “right-winger” because the right wing is the source for anti-Semitism in America. Such an attitude shows that while they accuse those of us on the right of living in the past, their understanding of anti-Semitism dates back at least forty years. Their views of conservatives have little to do with the reality of the conservative movement in America today, indeed, with the conservative movement as it has been evolving at least since William F. Buckely, Jr. launched the National Review in 1955. And yet, all too many in the MSM, equally clueless about the ideas undergirding American conservatism, don’t challenge them on their misunderstanding.

POPSObama = Jimmy Carter We have a president who is in sync with Carter. Now all we need are Republicans who believe as Reagan did. And, then, we could use another Reagan to rekindle the innate optimism that has always defined Americans and America.

POPS"Newton Day" In America? as the father of modern philosophy, but since logic and philosophy are not so uniquely Western as science, I’ll let it pass. The real giant of modern Western science, in my mind, is Sir Isaac Newton, whose articulation of the laws of gravitation and motion, and subsequent derivation of Kepler’s laws of planetary motion from those laws, demonstrated that the heavens and the earth all obeyed the same physical laws. While we’re celebrating his contribution, though, we should probably remember Kepler who went before him, and also Galileo Galilei, whose painstaking observation Stephen Hawking believes contributed more to the creation of the modern, natural sciences than anybody else. So, why are we not celebrating Newton Day, Galileo Day, Kepler Day, Copernicus Day, or Augustine Day? It’s because the day we’re being told to celebrate is actually a religious observance by a non-theistic religion, and what they’re celebrating is neither science nor reason.

POPSThe Statue of Liberty Under Construction - Remarkable Photographs "In an ironic twist, President Cleveland had vetoed the New York legislature from contributing fifty thousand dollars to help with the building of the statue's pedestal. Letting bygones be bygones, President Cleveland was more than happy to officiate at the ceremony. This had not been the only problem to face the statue in the years before its final unveiling, of course. From the model stage, above, to its triumphant moment of revelation, the process was fraught with difficulty - mostly of a financial nature."
