First Jesus-era house discovered in Nazareth
kareval
by kareval  12-21-2009    3
The archaeological find shows how different it was 2000 years ago: There were no Christians or Muslims, the Jewish Temple stood in Jerusalem and tiny Nazareth stood near a battleground between Roman rulers and Jewish guerrillas. The Jews of Nazareth dug camouflaged grottos to hide from Roman invaders, said archaeologist Yardena Alexandre, excavations director at the Israel Antiquities Authority. But the hamlet was so far off the beaten path that the caves were apparently not needed, she said. Based on clay and chalk shards found at the site, the dwelling appeared to house a "simple Jewish family," Alexandre added, as workers carefully chipped away at mud with small pickaxes to reveal stone walls. "This may well have been a place that Jesus and his contemporaries were familiar with," Alexandre said. A young Jesus may have played around the house with his cousins and friends. "It's a logical suggestion." The discovery so close to Christmas pleased local Christians.

Xerox is sponsoring Let's Say Thanks. I clipped some messages from soldiers that have received the postcards. It is easy to do. Select a drawing, select a message (or write your own) and type in your name and city. I encourage every Clipper, regardless of personal politics, to send a message of thanks for the brave men and women that are away from their families right now. It takes 10 seconds. Thanks!

People were jackass drivers back then too. The first track from Airs' Moon Safari album, accompanied by scenes from a video shot from a streetcar traveling down Market Street in San Francisco in 1905. Before the earthquake/fire of 1906 destroyed the area. Remarkable footage of the turn of the century lifestyles in California.

Limbaugh Bad, Mao Good by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  10-19-2009    3
and famously nondivisive figures like the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson expressed the hope that, with Mr. Divisive out of the picture, the NFL could now "unify." The second quotation " hailing Mao " was uttered back in June to an audience of high school students by Anita Dunn, the White House communications director. I know she uttered it because I watched the words issuing from her mouth on "The Glenn Beck Show" on Fox News. But don't worry. Nobody else played it. So if I understand correctly: Rush Limbaugh is so "divisive" that to get him fired Leftie agitators have to invent racist sound bites to put in his mouth. But the White House communications director is so undivisive that she can be invited along to recommend Chairman Mao as a role model for America's young. From my unscientific survey, U.S. school students are all but entirely unaware of Mao Tse Tung, and the few that aren't know him mainly as a T-shirt graphic or "agrarian reformer."

Berlin: Then and now
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-11-2009    4
Adrian Bridge recalls the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and looks ahead to events marking the 20th anniversary. "Less than a day had passed since the embattled East German Communists had thrown in the towel and said their citizens could travel freely and already the Berlin Wall, the ultimate symbol of the divided continent was disappearing into history. " As Willy Brandt, former mayor of West Berlin and West German Chancellor put it so succinctly: “What belongs together, now grows together.”

Letter to Nancy Pelosi, from Dennis Guthrie, Attorney
willhelm
by willhelm  8-30-2009
...I find it interesting that you and your husband are multi-millionaires with much of your fortune being made as a result of your “public service”. You have controlled legislation that has enhanced your husband’s investments both on and off shore. At the same time you redistributed the wealth of others. Our system of a free market economy is being destroyed by the likes of you, Harry Reid, and now our President. You ride around in a Gulfstream airplane at the tax payer’s expense while criticizing the presidents of companies who produced something for the economy. You add nothing to the economy of the United States; you only subtract therefrom. I would like to suggest that you return to the city of fruitcakes and nuts and eat your husband’s canned tuna and pineapple produced by illegal immigrants and by workers who have been excluded from the protection that 90% of the legal workers in the United States have. I await your defeat in the next election with glee.

Marine Corps Veteran at Townhall: "If You're Looking for a Swastika, Look On Your Own Arm"

-- should be required viewing AWESOME!!!!!--- "I, David William Hedrick, a member of the silent majority, decided that I was not going to be silent anymore. So, I let U.S. Congressman Brian Baird have it. I was one questioner out of 38, that was called at random from an audience that started at 3,000 earlier in the evening. Not expecting to be called on, I quickly scratched what I wanted to say on a borrowed piece of paper and with a pen that I borrowed from someone else in the audience minutes before I spoke. So much for the planned talking points of the right wing conspiracy." Hear, hear! For the record, Washington's Columbian reported on August 6: Over 10 years in Congress, U.S. Rep. Brian Baird has stayed tethered to his district, flying back to Southwest Washington for more than 300 sometimes-bruising town hall meetings during Congressional recesses. But this year, he's literally decided to phone it in.

Rules for Tea Partiers (with thanks to Mr. Saul Alinsky)
merrie
by merrie  7-27-2009    2
RULE 3: Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Since the enemy lacks expertise in almost everything that does not have to do with enriching Government Sachs and JP Morgan Chase, we’re doing well here too. Let me see, they lack expertise in, inter alia, honesty, integrity, patriotism, courage, and the democratic process. They also have no expertise in reading their own legislation, although they have mucho expertise at reading a teleprompter (Maybe if they put the healthcare bill up on TOTUS it would get read…?) RULE 4: Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. Where’s the hope, dude? Where’s the transparency? Where’s the the end to lobbyist connections? Where’s the post-racial? Where’s the bipartisanship? Where’s the “unity”? Where’s the “making everything great for ‘working class’ families”? RULE 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. Those “mom jeans” comments hurt.

Jupiter Impact Photo
merrie
by merrie  7-21-2009
Spectra collected by various observatories may help identify what the impactor was, since a large amount of water at the impact location would hint at a comet as the source. “We will also compare the observations with those collected during 15 years ago,” since that was a known comet, Marchis says. Without having seen it, scientists can’t tell how large the object was. “But the impact scar we’re seeing is about the same size as one of Jupiter’s big storms, Oval BA, Fletcher told New Scientist. “That, I believe, is about the size of the Earth.” Marchis says Jupiter may be protecting Earth from getting hit by such objects. “The solar system would have been a very dangerous place if we did not have Jupiter,” he told New Scientist. “We should thank our Giant Planet for suffering for us. Its strong gravitational field is acting like a shield protecting us from comets coming from the outer part of the solar system.” newscientist.com
