POPSGIANT gabage patch floating in Pacific This is absolutely unbelievable. If you're never drive across To put this in perspective, Texas, the second larges state in the union, includes roughly 267,339 sq. mi, or 7.4% of the nation's total area. And our mommies can't clean up after us this time.

POPSIlliteracy causing health problems, deaths I wonder if it's a matter of not being able to read, or not being able to read English. I know a lot of people get annoyed when they have to 'press 1 for English', but in such matters of life and death, perhaps someone should translate instructions on prescription bottles into all the major languages and just choose the speaker's lnguage for the sticker. I like the sticker idea too.

POPSScientist gets 16 years for illegal internet auction 16 year sentence? Isn't that a bit harsh? I thought it was generally accepted in science that the discoverer chooses the name anyway. I know in chemistry, IUPAC has accepted the discoverer's initial naming in every case I'm aware of. The Brazilian government must be seeing dollar signs.

POPSNew technique in identifying deadliest form of cancer People diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are generally told they have less than a year to live. Tthe survival rate is only about 10-15% after one year and 1-3% after 5 years. Early detection is key to being a candidate for surgery. By the time symptoms appear, almost 80 % are inoperable. Hopefully, this new technique will enable more people to detect it before it's too late. I had a friend that died from it at 24.

POPSWe're all Martians? I suppose it's POSSIBLE that we evolved from some organic matter that hitched a ride on a flying space rock, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

POPSPlants: Smarter than we thought? Some plants, it would seem, are able to communicate with each other. Does theis make them intelligent life? Depends on what you mean by intelligent. Clearly they are 'smarter' than we thought.

POPSHottest day ever in Japan leaves 13 dead The elderly were particularly at risk. I guess Japan never reaches those tempst hot because it's surrounded by ocean. Hawaii is the same way. !06 is pretty hot, but it's nowhere near a record in my home town.

POPSSleep late! Early rising not good for heart I wonder exactly how they did this study. Was there a control group of older folks that sleep late? Surely there must have been some factor that would point to the fact that early risers are not just older. Maybe there will be more details in the presentation this week. The part about sleep deprivation is interesting in either case. Lack of sleep does strange things, not just to your body, but to your mind as well.

POPSStudy: Drinking good for your kidneys! Study shows that moderate drinking prevents kidney cancer. Additionally, It is good for your heart. Don't go crazy though, this study says a glass or two glasses a week of beer or wine, so I guess it doesn't apply to margaritas. Oh well.

POPSZowie!Very baby gets (almost) whole new body! This was one very sick little boy. I didn't even know they could do intestinal transplants now. This little tiny 8-month old boy got almost a whole digestive tract transplant. Must be a trooper. I just had two organs transplanted in 2000 and I though I was going to DIE. Thank God te parents of the other infant had the heart to donate their baby's organs to someone who would have also died without them. It renews my faith in humanity.

POPSSome strategies of denialists Examples of common topics in which denialists employ their tactics include: Creationism/Intelligent Design, Global Warming denialism, Holocaust denial, HIV/AIDS denialism, 9/11 conspiracies, Tobacco Carcinogenecity denialism (the first organized corporate campaign), anti-vaccination/mercury autism denialism and anti-animal testing/animal rights extremist denialism. Denialism spans the ideological spectrum, and is about tactics rather than politics or partisanship.

POPSBorneo's pygmy elephant Looks like human 'advancement' is threatening yet another rare species. C'mon people! do you really want to live in a world inhabited by just humans and cockroaches? OK, this may be a slight exaggeration;p

POPSGlobal warming myths and facts This addresses the arguments of denialists with provable facts. Each myth and fact is expanded upon in the article. I didn't have room to clip the whole thing.

POPSPervert Haggard begs for money Does this guy have no shame? He's asking people for money so he and his wife can go to school for counseling. He needs to be receiving it, not giving it. They live in a three quarter of a million dollar home, in a city where the average annual income is about $31,000 and almost 25% live below the poverty level.
