It's appalling to me that such practices still exist at all, much less that they are commonly accepted as the 'norm' in some places. Egypt isn't even what most people would consider a 'bass-ackward' country by most.

I wonder if it's a matter of not being able to read, or not being able to read English. I know a lot of people get annoyed when they have to 'press 1 for English', but in such matters of life and death, perhaps someone should translate instructions on prescription bottles into all the major languages and just choose the speaker's lnguage for the sticker. I like the sticker idea too.

16 year sentence? Isn't that a bit harsh? I thought it was generally accepted in science that the discoverer chooses the name anyway. I know in chemistry, IUPAC has accepted the discoverer's initial naming in every case I'm aware of. The Brazilian government must be seeing dollar signs.

New technique in identifying deadliest form of cancer
hudgal1
by hudgal1  8-2-2007    1
People diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are generally told they have less than a year to live. Tthe survival rate is only about 10-15% after one year and 1-3% after 5 years. Early detection is key to being a candidate for surgery. By the time symptoms appear, almost 80 % are inoperable. Hopefully, this new technique will enable more people to detect it before it's too late. I had a friend that died from it at 24.

Sleep late! Early rising not good for heart
hudgal1
by hudgal1  9-6-2007
I wonder exactly how they did this study. Was there a control group of older folks that sleep late? Surely there must have been some factor that would point to the fact that early risers are not just older. Maybe there will be more details in the presentation this week. The part about sleep deprivation is interesting in either case. Lack of sleep does strange things, not just to your body, but to your mind as well.

This was one very sick little boy. I didn't even know they could do intestinal transplants now. This little tiny 8-month old boy got almost a whole digestive tract transplant. Must be a trooper. I just had two organs transplanted in 2000 and I though I was going to DIE. Thank God te parents of the other infant had the heart to donate their baby's organs to someone who would have also died without them. It renews my faith in humanity.

Some strategies of denialists

by hudgal1  6-9-2007    3
Examples of common topics in which denialists employ their tactics include: Creationism/Intelligent Design, Global Warming denialism, Holocaust denial, HIV/AIDS denialism, 9/11 conspiracies, Tobacco Carcinogenecity denialism (the first organized corporate campaign), anti-vaccination/mercury autism denialism and anti-animal testing/animal rights extremist denialism. Denialism spans the ideological spectrum, and is about tactics rather than politics or partisanship.
