About me
Coolest nerd ever. I'm an ex-high school math teacher. I didn't plan it that way. I was attending University of Houston on a scholarship from Pennzoil with plans to be a research chemist. After going through a pretty nasty divorce, I moved back home to San Antonio and decided to finish up at UT-San Antonio. There I learned I could graduate two semesters sooner if I switched my major and my minor. So I ended up with a degree in pure and applied mathematics. (Told you I am a nerd!) What else can you do with that degree besides teach?
I am a stroke survivor and a kidney/pancreas transplant recipient. I owe my life to a 19 year old motorcycle accident victim and his family.
Why I use Clipmarks
I don't remember exactly how I discovered Clipmarks. I think I had been researching something on the web and ended up with a clip on whatever-it-was from Clipmarks as a source.

In any case, I scanned some of the clips and I was hooked. It's a good source for information and a few good laughs, as well. It's also a source of misinformation sometimes too. That's why God gave us a brain: to sort through it all and decide which sources are reliable and which only have a political agenda.

Most of all, I enjoy clips from periodicals from other countries. It gives one a wider perspective and different viewpoints.

Obama's solution to Social Security
hudgal1
by hudgal1  11-12-2007
Hrm. I'm not sure what the Social Security tax is now, but is seems like a better idea that cutting benefits (dog food lunch, anyone?) or increasing the retirement age again. It's already 65! Expecting people to work after 65 is a little much, physically for the elderly. Another problem is that Medicare comes along with Social Security, and the older one gets, the more stuff goes wrong with the body! There might be a better solution, but I can't think of one. We are already one of the world's nations that neglect our elderly the most, yet one of the richest. Something's amiss here.

Insulin shot may save your heart from damage
hudgal1
by hudgal1  11-9-2007
Insulin may be good for more than controlling diabetes. A new study is being conducted on it's effects on heart attack victims since it was noted in an earlier study by a different group, that people on insulin had significantlly less inflamation following a heart attack than those who were not. Could administering low doses of insulin be common practice following a heart attack?

I think if someone wants to give them free treats, they should be allowed to have them, even if they're bad for them. This is America. We allow people to smoke, to not wear a motorclcle helmet in some states, and do a multitude of other things that are probably not healthy. I think seniors are entitled to the same rights everyone else has. Most of these people are well into their sunset years. Let them enjoy the little things in life while they still can!
