POPSconspiracy??
I generally find conspiracy theories interesting... but this is just ridiculous. I've never even held a gun, the few people I know that own guns are farmers that have them for shooting foxes that are killing their animals. Living in Australia where there isn't ready access to guns, being pro or anti has never really been an issue, but the more I read about these college and school shootings in the USA, the more relieved I am that I live in a country with strict gun laws. There's only one person I've ever known to be killed by gunshot - and that was a camper from the summer camp I worked at in New Jersey a few years back. His friend and him were goofing of at home, there were a stack of guns in the house, and his friend accidentally shot him. What a waste of a young life - a real tragedy. That sort of thing is major, national news over here in Australia. There just isn't the access to guns for anything like that to be happening. There are very few shootings.... I know there are il

POPSWhen will they learn??? I'm not American, I can't comment on their gun laws, but surely the powers that be should be asking themselves why this keeps happening, when it rarely, if ever, happens in other parts of the world.

POPSPet Peeve time.... I admit, as a 15/16 year old, I sounded like the makeup artist in the example below. Occasionally I catch myself saying it and want to wash my mouth out. I cringe when I'm listening to people talk when they have 'like' as every second word. I have to literally bite my tongue to stop myself from saying anything about it.

POPSGenetic Engineering.... (still...) I completely forgot until about 20 minutes ago that I had a discussion thread post due by midnight tonight, so I'm trying not to get sucked into the readings, but they're just SO damn interesting!

POPSWHAT??? Ok, this is ALL the article says... if it's true, how horribly horrific and sad. His poor daughter.... and what a waste of a fantastic talent.

POPSFirst the lolcats.... then the lolpoliticians.... today I stumbled across my first lolJesus. Yes, many Christians will probably find the below offensive. They made me giggle. That probably makes me a bad person, but I can deal with that. I needed a laugh today.

POPSRecast.... Buffy Buffy is one of my all time favourite shows... whenever I'm bored or need a break from study, out comes an old ep of Buffy. Anyways, stumbled across the Buzz Sugar recast challenge, and thought I'd give it a go (although, I really couldn't replace any of them!!) Buffy: Kirsten Bell (Veronica on Veronica Mars) Xander: Adam Brody (that guy on the OC) Willow: Tina Majorino (Mac on Veronica Mars) Giles: Hugh Laurie (House on House) Spike: Ed Westwick (Chuck on Gossip Girl) Yes, I realise there's a little overdose on ex-Veronica Marsers in there.... but I loved that show too, and actually saw Veronica as a new Buffy, and Mac as a new Willow.... they were obvious choices for me.

POPSColour Blindness... I've actually always wondered how colour blind people would discover they are colour blind.... (unless, obviously, an optometrist picked it up). Thankfully, other than not being able to see distances, my eyesight is fine.

POPSthought for the day... before I go to lunch.... the other night I had a complete freak out session. I was lying in bed and thought 'so, do I believe in an afterlife? what if I don't' believe in an afterlife? Does that mean there's just nothing? Forever? But forever is.... forever. It's never, ever again. Can I accept that once I die, that's it, there's never again, for ever. What is dead forever? Is that just blackness and nothing.....' Incoherent thoughts but once I started really thinking about what nothing and forever was, I got really freaked. As I read the below, I was calmed. I'm sure if I sit and think about what it says, I'm going to get all freaked out again. Or maybe it'll convince me that Buddhism with their belief in reincarnation & nirvana is the way to go....

POPScreationism I've done a bit of reading lately on the evolution vs creationism debate, and being at the stage where I'm not sure what exactly I believe myself, the more I want to read. I believe in the theory of evolution, but at the same time, I don't understand the whole 'big bang' theory. There's got to be more to it, and I'm not a scientific person - I just don't get it. Creationism.... I'd like to believe that there is a force out there that designed the world. I don't really identify with any religion or spiritual view, but I do quite like the ideas of the pagans. I have many more years of study and research before I choose my path. Anyway, have been reading The God Delusion and today at work came across Richard Hawkins' website. It's fascinating reading, but I have to say, was very concerned when I came across the below article (obviously, have just clipped a tiny, tiny bit of it). I don't know much about American politics (we're both democratic countries, but it's done so diff

POPSPoor Britney The events of the last weekend are just so upsetting! This is a girl who clearly needs help, more than just a weekend away, or time in a ritzy rehab place. It looks like mental illness more than anything else, let's hope she gets the help she needs. Mental illness affects so many people, and there just not the facilities or funding around to support these people. Treatment is ridiculously expensive, and that's for the people who can bypass the waiting lists! The wait to go see a psychiatrist is over a week - if someone is having a manic phase, a week is too long. Maybe all this publicity about Britney will bring much needed attention to the horrifically low standards of help available in Australia, and encourage the government and community to do something about it!

POPScomic bible? I'm a couple of chapters into Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, and have successfully been freaking myself out. More on that once I read the whole thing and make up my own mind. Today I came across something else I want to read - the comic book version of the bible. I've read a couple of sections of the bible over the years, I quite enjoy the Old Testament. Late 2006 I had to write an essay analysing the 'creation myth' of the bible, and it was probably the most enjoyment I've ever had researching and writing an essay. Anyways... time to actually do some work!!
